Valentine Project Ideas & Inspiration

Don’t you just love sewing for Valentine’s Day? Smocked hearts, embroidered roses and pretty red-and-pink prints – what could be sweeter? I think my only wish would be that we had just a little more time to plan for the holiday – after all, wasn’t it just Christmas, then New Year’s and isn’t it now time to start planning for Easter, too? To help you get started on some fun Valentine projects without having to hunt through dozens of patterns, we’ve put together a list of some of our favorites on our blog for you. There are adorable girls’ garments, cute embroidery designs and even a few free tutorials. Here are a few I love:

Sweet Valentine & Stripwork Jumper

Sweet Valentine: This precious gingham dress designed by Susan O’Connor is smocked and embroidered with red hearts and bullion roses. The pattern (sizes 4, 5 and 6 years) is included in issue 95 of Australian Smocking & Embroidery magazine.

Stripwork Jumper: With a simple bib-style bodice and a skirt pieced from vertical strips, this stripwork jumper by Carla Hegeman Crim of The Scientific Seamstress is adorably boutique with endless possibilities. This design can be made as a dress or a top and makes a great canvas for appliqué or embroidery. This downloadable pattern includes the patterns and instructions for sizes 6 months – 8 years.

Let’s Have a Conversation

Let’s Have a Conversation: Modeled after everyone’s favorite Valentine treat, this sweet smocking plate was designed by Frances Messina Jones. The plate is included in our December/January 2014 issue of Sew Beautiful.

All Dolled Up & Elizabeth’s Red Dress

All Dolled Up: Create matching outfits for your little Valentine and her 18-inch doll with the cute projects from Joan Hinds’ book All Dolled Up.

Elizabeth’s Red Dress: Designed by Amelia Johanson, this darling dress from our Sewing for a Royal Baby book was inspired by a vintage dress Amelia discovered in an antique store. The Royal Baby book includes the dress pattern in sizes 3 and 4, plus you can get the free tutorial for fashioning the top-stitched pleats here.
