Meet Our Teacher Licensing Team


We are so excited about our upcoming summer teacher licensing events – “The Perfect Mix – Sew, Serge and Embellish” July 21-26, and “Children’s Garment Construction” July 28-August 2. Both of these licensings will be held in Palm Harbor, FL at the beautiful Innisbrook Resort and taught by Connie Palmer, Kathy McMakin, Peggy Dilbone, Martha Pullen and Alicia Welcher. Those of you who have attended our events or followed Martha Pullen Company over the years undoubtedly already know and adore some or all of these women. But for anyone who doesn’t know this sewing teacher dream team, I invite you to learn more:

Connie Palmer
What began as a simple interest in sewing 25 years ago has blossomed into an exciting adventure Connie loves to share with her students. Her gift for elegant design, fabulous color sense and exquisite craftsmanship have made her a highly sought-after teacher in the US, Puerto Rico, Canada and Mexico. Connie is on the faculty of the Martha Pullen Licensing Program where she not only teaches, but creates a great number of projects included with each of those courses.

She has traveled and taught for Martha Pullen events and returns year after year as one of the favorite teachers at the School of Art Fashion. Her showcase of skills can often be seen on PBS television in Martha’s Sewing RoomAmerica Sews with Sue Hausmann and Quilting with Shar. She has the privilege of having garment designs on the covers of five Martha Pullen books: Lovely Lingerie; Elegant Sewing for Baby; Contemporary Heirlooms for the Older Girl; Six Easy Patterns and Fabulous Fashions. Connie has authored numerous sewing videos on notions, garment construction, heirloom sewing, quilting and more.

Kathy McMakin
Kathy McMakin is one of America’s foremost authorities in the field of heirloom sewing by machine and by serger. She teaches beginning and advanced sewers from every corner of the world and inspires a new level of confidence in her students. Kathy is the Director of Education for Martha Pullen Company and produces sewing and serging events held all across the United States. As the team leader and instructor for the Martha Pullen Teacher Licensing Program for both face-to-face and online curriculums, she can be found designing, serging, sewing and writing instructions nearly every day of the week.

She has been a guest instructor at events for every major sewing machine manufacturer in the world. She has authored several smocking, sewing and serging books and has produced and appeared in numerous sewing and serging videos. Her guest appearances on sewing television shows are many. Kathy is going on 32 years with Martha Pullen Company and now lives in Birmingham, Alabama, with her husband. They have two grown children and three (soon to be 4!) absolutely precious grandchildren.

Peggy Dilbone
Peggy Dilbone is a designer, author and teacher. She has been teaching for over 20 years, sharing her enthusiasm for heirloom sewing and sergers. She has appeared on America Sews with Sue Hausmann and Martha’s Sewing Room with Martha Pullen. Peggy has been published numerous times in Sew Beautiful Magazine and has garments showcased in Elegant Sewing for Baby, Fabulous Fashions, Six Easy Patterns for Women, Small Quilts and Such, and Sleepwear Just for You by Martha Pullen. Peggy’s Trinity Cross Christening Gown is featured in The Best of Sew Beautiful Christening Gowns by Martha Pullen, which features eight of Sew Beautiful‘s favorite gowns. Peggy has taught classes in London, Mexico and Puerto Rico; and at Husqvarna Viking convention, Martha Pullen School of Art Fashion and Martha Pullen /Husqvarna Viking Extravaganzas. Peggy presents heirloom and serger seminars and trunk shows throughout the United States and is a key teacher and designer for the Martha Pullen Heirloom licensing programs. Peggy is the designer of a series of sewing and serger patterns, embroidery CDs and instructional DVDs which are all published under her company Peggy D’s Designs.

Martha Pullen
Martha Campbell Pullen, Ph. D., started her heirloom sewing business in a tiny shop in Huntsville, Alabama. In 1981, two months after opening that shop, she began importing laces and fabrics to sell mail-order, both wholesale and retail. Next came Martha Pullen School of Art Fashion, which brought over 800 people to Huntsville each year. Her Martha Pullen Licensed Teacher programs brought another 400 people to spend another week in Huntsville each year. There are Martha Pullen Licensed Sewing Teachers now teaching all over the world and currently these licensing programs are being conducted in several locations in the United States as well as on line. She has conducted full scale Martha Pullen schools in Australia, England, Sweden, Canada and New Zealand as well as 47 states. More…

Alicia Welcher
Alicia is a designer, author and sewing instructor who specializes in heirloom and serger sewing. She has appeared on Martha’s Sewing Room with Martha Pullen and has published countless projects under the Martha Pullen Company label. As a beginning and advanced instructor at the Martha Pullen School of Art Fashion, Martha Pullen Teacher Licensings, other events throughout the country and at the Dublin Sewing Center in Dublin, CA, she has earned a following of devoted sewists.
