How to Be a Great Sewing Teacher

What does it take to be a great sewing teacher? Teaching sewing is both an art and a science. Of course, you have to know how to sew and have projects to teach. You also have to know how to TEACH sewing and provide the nourishment and encouragement your students need to succeed. Our online licensing courses aim to accomplish all these goals and provide you with the tools you need to successfully teach others to sew.

Our next online licensing course, Teaching Beginning Sewing II, begins November 15. We’re thrilled to offer this licensing course online for the first time and invite you all to join us. Alicia Welcher, Pam Mahshie, Peggy Dilbone, Connie Palmer, Martha Pullen and I had such fun filming the course videos for you, and the projects in this curriculum are outstanding. There are more than 30 projects ranging from garments to quilts to bags to home decor. Some are even perfect for teaching children and teens to sew! You’ll get how-to videos for all the projects as well as handouts you can download and teach. We’ll teach you techniques like how to install zippers in various ways, creating and attaching piping and more. Plus, we’ll share Martha’s Beginning Sewing Notebook (which includes almost every beginning sewing technique imaginable), business ideas and more.

Throughout the course you’ll be able to correspond with me and the other teachers as well as the other students. In order to receive your Martha Pullen teaching license at the end of the course, you’ll need to complete seven required projects. This license gives you shared copyright ownership of the course curriculum, meaning that you can either make the projects for sale without limit, or if you are teaching you can make as many copies of the project instructions as you need for your students.

This license is of course a great credential for anyone interested in teaching sewing, but if you’re not interested in teaching that’s OK too – we have many licensing students with no plans to teach, but rather the desire to master new techniques and receive a gorgeous collection of exclusive Martha Pullen licensed patterns to sew.

A few of the fabulous course projects.

I could keep going on about all the wonderful things this licensing course has to offer, but I thought you might enjoy hearing first-hand from some of licensed teachers who have taken one or more of our previous online licensing courses. Here’s what they have to say:

“I have been discussing a sewing class with my dealer for some time and have so wanted to help the dealer out. But it’s not easy coming up with all the content needed on your own. The Martha Pullen Licensing provides the basis for me to build a full set of curriculum for students. I truly have enjoyed the learning videos. They are well done and well organized. And the projects have been well chosen for beginners or even sewers who want to learn something new like quilting! Love this online course! It’s a great alternative for those of us who could not make it to Alabama for onsite training.” – Debora Nipper, Arkansas

“At long last, I am participating in a Martha Pullen licensing. I have followed Martha, Sew Beautiful since the first copy I found in a bookstore. I learned to sew from my Mother years ago and then following Martha, renewed my love for heirloom sewing. I retired 3 years ago to care for my husband and am not able to travel to Alabama, so this course is a dream come true for me. The past few years have been hard to set aside time to sew, but the need to meet these goals help me to take the time! The course content is wonderful and the instructors the best. Each is so thorough in explaining each step and a role model to emulate. The projects will be an asset to use in our own teaching. I truly appreciate this course and look forward to more!” – Judy Stout, Ohio
