The editors and staff of Sew Beautiful magazine strive to bring you inspiration to create your own designs; information and patterns to create beautiful garments; and present to us a collection of designers that offer their breath-taking garments and projects to keep up sewing. Looking through the issues of the past two years, one designer stands out with eight feature articles. Kathy Dykstra is one of the many talented Sew Beautiful designers who continue to inspire us to create beautiful things. At age 12, Kathy learned to sew, loved it, and began to make herself many one-of-a-kind garments. After marriage and children, she learned the art of smocking and heirloom sewing. From that point on, she made smocked and heirloom clothing for her four children as well as for many clients and local shops. She teaches at local heirloom shops and for private groups when requested. Her passion for smocking and heirloom sewing has led her to take on the challenge of creating new patterns and original smocking designs. Her works have been seen in Australian Smocking and Embroidery and Sew Beautiful magazines, as well as the French publication Les Smocks. Join Sew Beautiful designer Kathy Dykstra and create two beautiful dresses.

Ella’s Easter Dress
Kathy Dykstra – 2 Days (Advanced – Fine Machine Sewing & Hand Smocking)

Join Kathy to create this sweet dress made of white and blue cotton piqué. The dress construction includes techniques such as curved piping, shaped yokes, machine satin stitching, perfectly edged collars and more. The blue piqué accents include tiny bias sleeve bands, contrasting hem bias and a perfect Peter Pan collar for a crisp fresh Spring appearance. The contrasting blue collar is trimmed with tiny Swiss edging. The shaped and piped yoke adds additional interest over the simple hand-smocked. The center panel of the dress is embellished with a machine satin-stitched ribbon design and a sprinkling of hand-embroidered bullion roses and leaves. The dress, made in size 18 months, will be constructed as a ready-to-smock garment to be smocked after the dress construction is completed or as time allows.
