All of the techniques will be combined to make a lovely heirloom pillow.

BEVERLEY SHELDRICK'S SCHOOL

Beverley Sheldrick
Machine Techniques
You will need to bring your own machine, and you should have a basic knowledge of adult garment construction.
Beverley Sheldrick is New Zealand's leading authority on heirloom sewing and embroidery, and she has authored a book on the subject. She has taught silk ribbon embroidery on Martha's Sewing Room television series for PBS and has taught at the Martha Pullen School of Art Fashion for many years. Her glorious designs by hand and exemplary machine work, as well as her delightful accent and enthusiastic manner of teaching, have delighted students on three continents. Join Beverley for four days of sewing, machine embellishment and silk ribbon embroidery by hand as you create these vintage inspired projects.

Queen Anne's Lace Jacket
Beverley Sheldrick - 3 Days (Hand & Machine)

Legend has it Queen Anne of England, an expert lace maker, challenged her ladies to a contest to see who could make a pattern of lace as lovely as this wildflower. Of course, the Queen's lace was indeed the finest, and the wild flower was fittingly named.

While strolling through a clothing museum, Beverley was intrigued by a vintage ladies' coat embellished with hand embroideries of lovely Queen Anne's lace flowers. Beverley duplicated this cluster of tiny lace-like blooms using a special thread technique with silk ribbon. She created the long stems and leaves with twin needle machine pintucks. She will share her mastery with you as you create a beautiful silk dupioni jacket, embellished with these intricate flowers in tones of beige and cream. Her helpful hints and techniques will become yours as you embellish and then construct the fully lined, long sleeved jacket. Choose black or dark green for the jacket kit. The basic jacket pattern will be from Martha Pullen's Six Easy Patterns for Women book and will be available in sizes XS through 3XL.

Special Occasion Bag
Beverley Sheldrick - 1 Day (Hand & Machine)
Set off the Queen Anne's Lace jacket with a coordinated handbag for a beautiful ensemble, perfect for special occasion fashion. This gorgeous one-day accessory in the same black or dark green silk dupioni adds a touch of elegance with just a bit of silk ribbon embroidery by hand.

WENDY SCHOEN'S BABY SCHOOL

Wendy Schoen
Hand & Machine Techniques
You must bring your own sewing machine
You should have basic knowledge of hand embroidery stitches and techniques.

A nationally known designer, teacher, and author, Wendy Schoen's publications include, My Favorite Designer Doll Clothes, Creating Heirlooms for Baby, and Heirloom Embroidery for Boys. She is the designer behind Petite Poche Patterns, and her inspiring designs have been featured in Sew Beautiful, Fancywork, Creative Needle, and McCall's Needlework magazines. She serves on the faculties of the Martha Pullen School of Art Fashion and the Smocking Arts Guild of America. Wendy has studied embroidery in Madeira, Portugal, and Ayr, Scotland. She also has studied at the Royal School of Needlework.

This year, with Wendy's guidance, you will revisit the classics to create a traditional baby layette. The focus of Baby School centers on glorious hand embroidery. Renowned for her expertise in Broderie Anglaise, Wendy will help you will experience whitework at its finest. Buttonhole scallops, granitos, eyelets, applique, stem stitch, and padded satin stitch are just a few stitches covered. For the first time, wool embroidery will be included in the school. Your adorable baby blanket project will become an instant heirloom featuring puffy applique paired with elegant but simple embroidery stitches such as bullion, chain stitch, lazy daisy, French knot, backstitch, and more.

Baby Chick Applique Coverlet
Wendy Schoen - 2 Days - Hand

This precious project features ultra soft, puffy appliqued chicks, delicately arranged around the edges of a sweet coverlet. Machine stitched and stuffed appliques in soft stretch terrycloth are applied by hand onto the base fabric; then embroidered with imported wool. Lovely, soft and perfect for this application, wool wears well and works up quickly and beautifully. The base of the coverlet is made of pretty blue imported silky cotton. You will hand quilt the coverlet in the tradition of Sashiko, and add more embellishment with sweet wool embroidery. The charming coverlet is backed with soft flannel fabric and bordered with a large scalloped flange. You will love making this precious coverlet during your 2-day lesson. A sewing machine is required for only a short time, so sharing is a possibility.

Sashiko is a very old form of hand sewing, using a simple running stitch sewn in repeating or interlocking patterns through one or more layers of fabric. Originally designed for quilting together several layers of fabric for warmth and durability or for strengthening a single layer of fabric, Sashiko patterns readily lend themselves to contemporary designs and projects.

Embroidered Baby Layette
Wendy Schoen - 2 Days - Hand

What more glorious way is there to prepare for a baby than making an exquisite layette? During this 2-day lesson, you will make a precious baby dress of Swiss batiste with a coordinated bonnet and bib, all beautifully hand embroidered with bullion roses and swirling stems. You'll scatter lovely little eyelets and granitos about the dress and stitch a pretty applique dogwood flower centered on the skirt front. You'll work swirling trails of stem stitch to accentuate the delicate nature of the design and make edges of tiny buttonhole scalloping, creating a lovely frame to this traditional design. Worked entirely with Coton a Broder in pretty pastel colors, the feminine design will feature a tee-style yoke with gathered yoke sections and straight three-quarter length sleeves. You will edge the matching Gertrude-style slip in matching scallops, and embroider the skirt to match. The bonnet, with its embroidered broad turn-back brim, will gather to a round crown and then tie in front with pretty silk satin ribbons and embellished rosettes. An adorable embroidered wrap-around bib will complete the ensemble. This layette is available in size 6-months only.
