44. Antique Silk Shaded Etui - Circa 1880
Wendy Schoen – 1 day (Hand only)
COST: $90.00 INCLUDING KIT

During this 6-hour lesson, you will discover the art of silk shading embroidery while making this gorgeous antique reproduction etui. Made of natural silk broadcloth, the lovely etui features a pin disc bottom which opens to reveal a place for your needles and closes in front with a single pearl button. The top of the case is decorated with little embroidered strawberries, realistically shaded and stitched over a grid pattern created by thread replacement embroidery. Thread replacement is the technique of withdrawing a set number of fabric threads in either a stripe or grid pattern then reweaving a replacement thread of another type in its place to form a contrasting pattern in a block of fabric. This fascinating Victorian etui, reproduced from an antique original, is a useful and beautiful addition to your sewing room.
