Machine Techniques *You must bring your own sewing machine This school is taught by Dody Baker and Patty Smith, two of the world's leading heirloom sewing teachers. They have many years of experience in teaching, including smocking and French sewing by machine. Dody and Patty are regular contributors to Sew Beautiful magazine, and they have taught in their local area as well as in other areas of the country. They are dynamite teachers and bring you a wealth of knowledge. You won't believe the skills you will acquire sewing with them for four days - you won't be a beginner when you leave the Beginning School! Intermediate French Sewing Techniques Dody Baker or Patty Smith 1/2 day (Machine) By the time you get to this class, you will no longer be a beginner. You will want to learn more and more about heirloom sewing techniques. This class is one of the most requested by our students. Learn how simple and easy it is for you to make puffing from our favorite Swiss batiste, shape lace, master machine pintucks and other heirloom sewing techniques that you will add to special garments in the future. All of the techniques will be combined to make a lovely heirloom pillow.
Hand and Machine Techniques *You must bring your own sewing machine Kari Mecca is the owner of Kari Me Away, a business catering to those who love embroidery designs and supplies. She is a regular contributor to Sew Beautiful magazine and she has taught at Martha's School of Art Fashion for many years. School students always love her designs, creativity and projects. Her one-of-a-kind projects and ideas range from fun and funky to sweet and sassy. Kari has designed projects that feature many of her great embellishing techniques for this school. The embellishing ideas and techniques that you will learn in this class will be valuable in many of your future sewing projects and will fill this four days of sewing with Kari with lots of fun and learning. Lezette is one of our much loved teachers, and you will enjoy her easy style of teaching while learning everything you need to know about creating classic and fun garments for girls. She serves on the faculties of the Martha Pullen School of Art Fashion and the Smocking Arts Guild of America. Wendy has studied embroidery in Madeira, Portugal, and Ayr, Scotland. Beverley Sheldrick is New Zealand's leading authority on heirloom sewing and embroidery, and she has authored a book on the subject. She has taught silk ribbon embroidery on Martha's Sewing Room television series for PBS and has taught at the Martha Pullen School of Art Fashion for many years. Her glorious designs by hand and machine work as well as her delightful accent and enthusiastic manner of teaching have delighted students on three continents. Machine Techniques Baby Lock Machines Provided Our 2009 Baby Lock School not only features the wonderful top-of-the-line Baby Lock sewing and embroidery machine, but it will also feature talented sewing educators from Baby Lock. Pam Mahshie is the Director of Education for Baby Lock USA, a Martha Pullen Licensed Teacher and she has appeared as a guest on the Martha's Sewing Room television show. She has taught many times at the School of Art Fashion. Joan Friedrich is a talented Baby Lock educator that exemplifies southern hospitality and charm. She has taught at the School of Art Fashion in the past. Her knowledge of the Baby Lock machine, her sewing talents and her "G.R.I.T.S." personality will guarantee you a fantastic and fun week. Pam and Joan have created fun and educational projects for the School of Art Fashion. These projects will highlight wonderful sewing techniques as well as sewing machine features, feet and machine embroidery. Note: Any machine embroidery designs used are for in class use only. Baby Daygown Pam Mahshie - 1 Day (Baby Lock Machine Provided Take one ordinary baby daygown, one pretty handwork design and mix both with the MasterWorks software program to create a beautifully designed baby garment. Let Pam and the Baby Lock team show you how easy it can be to turn handwork patterns into machine stitches with just a simple click of a button. Pam will show you how to add lace to the mix and you'll also be learning easy lace shaping in the hoop. By the end of the day, the process is complete and voila! A precious daygown that would have taken months to complete by hand has been successfully completed in a few short hours!
Hand & Machine Techniques *You must bring your own sewing machine Join Cheryl Davidson for four wonderful sewing days and complete a gorgeous heirloom christening gown designed especially for the School of Art Fashion. Cheryl is the owner of A Frayed Knot, an heirloom sewing store where she specializes in custom designed infant and children's clothing, christening gowns and special occasion garments. Cheryl is a designer for Sew Beautiful magazine and has also taught at Martha Pullen Schools in the past. Spend four days learning intermediate heirloom sewing by machine techniques, fine construction techniques and hand embroidery. Christening Gown Cheryl Davidson - 3 Days - (Hand & Machine) ![]() Looking through the beautiful Grandmother's Hope Chest by Martha Pullen, you will see several antique christening coat dresses. Actually, the gown is not a coat at all, but an overdress to be worn with an underdress or fancy petticoat. Cheryl has designed a special two-piece christening ensemble that will echo this antique style. The overdress for this elegant gown is made from sheer cotton Swiss voile, with a white Swiss batiste petticoat extending below the hem edge of the gown. Hand embroidery embellishments down the center front of the gown yoke is complimented on either side with pin tucks, lace insertion, and beading with ribbon. The sleeves are made totally of lace insertion, with beaded entredeux, ribbon and edging for the sleeve band. The skirt of the gown is made of five panels that are sewn together with lace insertion, and extends around to the center back yoke where it is left open from the waist down to the hem. French lace edging, insertion, and entredeux gently gather around the bottom curved hem line of the skirt panels up to the center back waist line. The gown skirt is attached to the yoke with beaded entredeux and ribbon. Around the inside edge of each skirt panel are three rows of corded pin tucks, with the center panel having a lace shaped oval. The bottom oval has hand embroidery of small bullion roses on curling vines These special touches of lace and hand embroidery will make this an heirloom to be treasured forever, and the techniques learned from Cheryl will be used in many future heirloom garments. Christening Gown Petticoat Cheryl Davidson - 1 Day (Hand & Machine) The simple underdress or petticoat will be sleeveless and will extend longer than the overdress giving a sweet peek-a-boo effect. The longer length dress hem will be embellished with rows of corded pin tucks above the hem edge made from wide French lace insertion and edging. The neck and armholes will be finished with a delicate shell stitch by hand. The beautiful addition of this petticoat will complete the two-piece christening gown ensemble.
Serger Techniques Baby Lock Serger Provided Sergers are a complete mystery to some students and to others they may only be used for finishing seams for a more professional look to a garment. Spend four days with Missy and Margaret and see how the serger can be used to construct, embellish and finish beautiful heirloom projects. Margaret Tully is a Baby Lock Education Consultant and is known as the "Serger Queen." Margaret is credited with inventing the wave stitch for Baby Lock. Missy Billingsley, also a Baby Lock Education Consultant, is a dynamic teacher with lots of style. She specializes in heirloom sewing by machine and serger and is a Martha Pullen Licensed Teacher. Both of these great teachers have created the perfect heirloom by serger projects for the School of Art Fashion. These projects will include heirloom techniques normally done by machine. Serger Quilt Margaret Tully & Missy Billingsley -1 day Baby Lock Serger Provided Margaret has designed a spectacular quilt that is not only beautiful, but quick to construct as well. Kathy Harrison, the owner and designer of Custom Keepsakes, will thrill you with her embroidery designs that are so fine that she is constantly questioned about whether they are really stitched by hand or machine. Nina has had projects published in several magazines including Through the Needle, McCall's Quilting and Designs in Machine Embroidery. She has also been a guest on the PBS series, Martha's Sewing Room. She is an avid quilter, heirloom sewer and loves to do all kinds of embellishments. Lovely Lingerie for Mother Nina McVeigh - 1 Day (Bernina Machine Provided What could be more special than mother and daughter pictures and special memories? Using the "Lovely Lingerie" and the new "Sleepwear Especially for You" books by Martha Pullen Company as inspiration, Nina will create a special matching mother and daughter lingerie set. Nina will start with the basic overlay gown pattern available in sizes small to 3XL and combine heirloom fabrics, laces and trims for a beautiful garment. Matching PJ's for Daughter Nina McVeigh - 1 Day (Bernina Machine Provided) To complete the lingerie set for mother and daughter, Nina will use the girl's pajama pattern featured in the new book, "Sleepwear Especially for You" by Martha Pullen. The pattern will be available for young girl's sizes 2 to 12. Heirloom fabrics, laces and trims are combined to create a sweet pajama set perfect for special morning photos or a sweet mother/daughter photo. Nina will be sure to include many new Bernina techniques and machine embroidery using a top-of-the-line Bernina sewing and embroidery machine.
Hand & Machine Techniques Intermediate - Advanced *You must bring your own sewing machine Debbie Glenn is a nationally known teacher specializing in applique, smocking, fine machine sewing techniques and design. She travels across the country teaching at various events as well as at the Smocking Guild of America. Debbie is the creator of the pattern line called Love & Stitches. She has been a featured teacher at many past School of Art Fashion events. Join Debbie for 4 days of machine magic and learn some of her techniques for recreating handwork by machine. Class time concentrates on mastery of these new techniques. Students make reference samples prior to beginning garment construction. Confidence gained making samples lead to successful completion of class projects as well as the incorporation of the new techniques into future projects. Michelle has 35 years of sewing experience and has taught various sewing, heirloom and quilting classes for the past 20 years. Her collection of "Simple & Elegant" projects include beautifully illustrated instructional books for projects using machine embroidery. Michelle and a top-of-the-line Pfaff sewing and embroidery machine will make this four-day school an exciting and unforgettable experience. Victorian Romance Quilt Michelle Griffith - 4 Days (Pfaff Machine Provided) Create the beautiful Victorian Romance quilt which features three of Michelle's exclusive embroidery designs, bobbin work with specialty threads, English lace overlay, decorative entredeux stitching and more! The quilt top will be constructed from Michelle's Victorian Romance fabric collection by RJR fabrics. The quilt features four machine embroidered corner blocks with a quilted fan in the center block. Reverse bobbin work and embroidery are additional embellishments added to the quilted fan center. The wall hanging or baby quilt measures 40" X 40" when completed. Michelle has included proper hooping and machine embroidery techniques, reverse bobbin work, specialty stitching techniques, quilt piecing techniques and netting overlay techniques into her class instructions. Students will focus on completing the quilt top with all embellishments during the class time. Her wonderfully written and detailed instructions, including pictures, will be easy to follow when completing the quilt back and binding at home.
