La Petit Jardin Circa 1920
1 Day - Fine Machine Sewing, Intermediate
Knowledge of basic FMS techniques (pulling threads to gather lace, lace to flat fabric, French seams) required
 |
Join Debbie for a day of machine magic and learn how to transform a simple yoke dress into a precious Parisian baby frock with distinctive European flair. While the pastel embroidery creates a dimensional flower garden in both of these dresses, it's the balanced design and haute couture details which make them "extraordinaire." What an absolutely beautiful blue baby couture daygown! Both sides of the full length front placket are edged with gathered French lace and a fully lined and interfaced yoke supports the weight of the pin stitched serpentine hemmed skirt. The inside is as beautiful as the outside with the tiniest French seams and lace bound armholes. A perfectly symmetrical white lace trimmed Peter pan collar and banded puff sleeves complete the garment...and almost everything is embellished with precious pink granito posies!
|
Frilly French Christening Gown & Bonnet
2 Days - Fine Machine Sewing, Intermediate-Advanced
Knowledge of basic FMS techniques (pulling threads to gather lace, lace to flat fabric, French seams) required
 |
These Italian organdy and French lace confections incorporate vintage details from several dresses and bonnets in Debbie's personal collection. Special features on the bonnet include two drawn thread hemstitched tucks set off by machine featherstitching (like those found on a "bonnet blanc pour bebe du premier age" from Chartres, France), a frothy triple lace frill (inspired by a c.1890 Ayrshire bonnet), luscious silk satin ribbon rosettes, and an easy to construct gathered crown (similar to that on a 1920's Parisian nightcap). The daygown has the sweetest inverted V yoke trimmed in pin stitched lace insertion embellished with pinwheel roses and wisps of floral embroidery. A simple neckline frill, double lace and beading trimmed puff sleeves, and inverted side tucks make this a sweet little dress, but it's the elaborate drawn thread hemstitched tucks alternating with rows of feather stitching and embroidery on the skirt that transform it into a stunning christening gown fit for a royal Miss! Students will learn how to prepare fabric for machine drawn threadwork, remove the appropriate number of threads, adjust machine stitches to replicate hand work, secure tucks using the basic hemstitch, use a pleater to create stroke gathers, adjust a machine feather stitch so it looks handmade, apply cut away lace without fuzzies, make ribbon rosettes, pinwheel roses, and so much more. This special French inspired heirloom set is sure to make baby look like a little cherub on her special day!

Sweet and Sassy
Lezette Thomason 2 days (Machine)
Oh, so sweet is this little apron dress with three little knife pleats on one side. The sweet scalloped collar is a lovely balance for the little sleeves that are stitched in with no gathers at the armhole but feature little gathers at the bias sleeve band. Pleats in the front are balanced with knife pleats on the dress back. Pleats are embellished with sequin buttons. This precious dress is made of soft pink piqué. Let Lezette teach you how to make little bitty piping and how to make collars fit perfectly every time! This project involves drafting and construction. Choose from sizes 6 mo - 4.
Dots are Hot
Lezette Thomason 2 days (Machine & Machine Embroidery)
Dots are hot! And the second project is both sassy and sophisticated. Redraft a great skort pattern so we can add a band of rickrack. The bottom part of the black piqué skort will be machine embroidered with red hot dots… all sizes of dots! Little girls will love this cute adaptation. Lezette will mail the embroidery design to you in advance of the class to be loaded onto your machine for class use, and after class the design is yours to keep! Don't worry if you don't have an embroidery machine, Lezette will have a couple of classroom machines ready to go for anyone to use to complete the embroidery part of the project. Please bring a waist measurement so you can fit your skort just right. To complete the outfit, Lezette will show you how to redraft a blouse pattern to make a ready-for-summer sleeveless blouse to be paired with the skort. The white blouse will feature black piping on the collar and red hot buttons. This great outfit can be made in your choice of sizes 3-8.

Avonlea Lacey Baby Dress & Slip
2 Days - Hand & Machine
 |
Beautiful lace dresses were popular during the Victorian Era because of their fragile beauty and elegance. Today, we marvel at the intricacy of the work involved in creating these gorgeous garments and we strive to recreate them. During this lesson, students will be duplicating an antique dress and matching slip from Wendy's personal collection. Nothing is more beautiful than a hand embroidered dress embellished with miles of lovely French lace insertions, and this dress proves to be an instant favorite. The glorious design of the dress is in keeping with those of the late 19th Century, but its actual date is unknown. The dainty embroidery design consists of luscious looped bullion flowers gathered together in puffs. The granito centers are perfectly suited to the dimensional shape of the buds. Graceful stems are recreated in satiny smooth stem stitch while the leaves are given sheen by the use of padded fishbone stitch. Working with imported cotton organdy, students will learn to attach shaped lace insertion via point de Paris stitch by machine, lace to lace, lace to entredeux, and many other French hand sewing construction techniques. Students choose one of three sizes to make: Size 2, 3, or 4 and those participating in this lesson must have a basic knowledge of machine construction and hand embroidery. A machine with Point de Paris stitch function is necessary for this class, or another technique will be substituted. A slip pattern is also included.

Le Bon Enfant French Baby Dress
1 Day - Hand & Machine
 |
This most precious piqué baby dress was found at the Paris flea market. The French people have a way of bringing out the beauty of an object by highlighting it with simplicity of design. This darling high yoke creation is styled with puffed sleeves which are casually bound with a bias binding, Peter Pan collars which bear no embellishment whatsoever, but shout perfection, and a machine stitched hem. What is extraordinary about this dress is the plain inlaid border of fabric, embroidered with the most simplistic embroidery design imaginable, hemmed together with its facing in a scalloped seam. The scalloped flange is also used at the lower edge of the bodice and a tiny piped edging punctuates the otherwise unembellished creation. On the back, a simple inlaid placket is pronounced by the addition of 8 mother-of-pearl buttons, each placed only 5/8" apart. Exquisite!! During this 6-hour lesson, we will create the beautiful scalloped flange for this striking creation while learning basic Broderie Anglaise embroidery techniques. In keeping with the simple lines, padded satin stitch leaves, stem stitch stems and perfectly round eyelets make up the basis of this classic design. Working with imported piqué, students will learn the proper method of tying on, proper foundation choice, how to accurately pad, and tricks to making your satin stitch perfect every time. You will also learn the fool-proof method of making a beautiful stem-stitch, and how to make your eyelets so fine, they look machine made. The extensively illustrated handout provides detailed instruction for constructing the garment after class ends and an embroidery primer encourages completion of the project. The included pattern is available in infant sizes 6 months, 1 and 2.

Baby Steps Sunsuit & Topper
1 Day - Hand & Machine
 |
During this 6-hour embroidery lesson, students learn the art of shadow work embroidery by hand. Wendy is known for her expertise in shadow work and during this lesson she will share with you her methods for tying on and off, which route to travel, where to start, and how to master the stitch. Sometimes stitching unusual shapes can be a bit daunting, but with her unique method of shadow work by geometric association, Wendy helps you to master the technique, once and for all. Sewing playwear has never been so much fun before making this adorable 2-piece suit. Perfect for everyday wear or fancy enough for going out, this sunsuit is made of the cutest polka dot baby print imaginable. Cool and comfortable, this fabric is paired up with matching solids to create this cute ensemble. The romper is styled with ladder style straps and gathered bubble pants with easy-on snap crotch. A sweet contrasting fabric bib cuff is gently scalloped and attached to the bodice. The matching coat can be made with long or short sleeves and boasts an adorable scalloped collar and pocket. The pocket is embroidered with a sweet shadow stitched motif, perfectly complementing the chosen fabric, and a scalloped edge in contrasting fabric completes the look. This quick, easy project is the perfect way to spend a relaxing day stitching and the perfect way to learn shadowwork embroidery.

Beverley Sheldrick
Hand & Machine Techniques
*You will need to bring your own machine and you should have a basic knowledge of adult garment construction.
Beverley Sheldrick is New Zealand's leading authority on heirloom sewing and embroidery and she has authored a book on the subject. She has taught silk ribbon embroidery on Martha's Sewing Room television series for PBS and has taught at the Martha Pullen School of Art Fashion for many years. Her glorious designs by hand and machine work as well as her delightful accent and manner of teaching with such enthusiasm have delighted students on three continents. Last July, Beverley asked her group of students what type of projects they would like to see at the school and those same students challenged her to create a jacket and skirt that could be worn together or individually. Here is her answer to their challenge...something very different and original, especially designed for this School, yet still using all of her favorite heirloom techniques. This is an amazing outfit and one which will suit both young and young-at-heart!
Creative Heirloom Jacket
2 days (Hand & Machine)

 |
The heirloom patchwork jacket will be made from the Martha Pullen "Fabulous Fashions" jacket pattern. Beverley will show you her creative way of combining heirloom techniques such as pintucks in waves and swirls, a little crazy shaped lace and a bit of entredeux. Once the black silk dupioni heirloom pieces are created they will be cut up and stitched together to form crazy patch panels. A tiny bit of feather stitching and just the right touch of silk ribbon embroidery embellish the panels. The fully lined jacket features ecru laces and trims. The jacket pattern is available in sizes XS to 4XL.
|
Creative Heirloom Skirt
2 days (Hand & Machine)
 |
Beverley has designed a fully lined "A line" skirt which will compliment all body types. The basic skirt becomes a lovely boutique-style garment when the same creative crazy patch panels used in the jacket are also used to make a border around the skirt - making it a perfect match to the Creative Heirloom Jacket or distinctly individual enough to be worn on its own. Students will bring a favorite skirt pattern and Beverley will be glad to help you to adapt the border design to your tried and true pattern. (Please call to verify that the fabric amount in the kit will be appropriate for your personal pattern choice.)
|
Please Note: Your school project kit will contain black silk dupioni fabric for the jacket and skirt. When photographing the black class sample suit, the details and techniques were not easily seen. The blue suit was made as an alternate sample to show details more clearly.
