1. Circa 1950's Christening Gown
Wendy Schoen - 3 Days (Hand & Machine)
Cost: $300.00 including kit
 |
For this 3-day lesson, you will create a gorgeous christening gown of cotton organdy, embellished with row upon row of beautiful French laces joined together by machine. Constructing an heirloom christening gown is an exercise in mathematical, visual, and creative skills. In order to create the fancy front panel, lace insertion strips are joined together using the roll and whip method by machine, perfectly duplicating the French hand sewing techniques of yesteryear. The choice of laces plays an important part in the end result, and during this lesson you will learn why certain laces look better than others when joined together. Working from an antique gown, Wendy manages to keep the integrity of the original while recreating the same feeling and scale of the exquisite gown using modern elements. The front panel of the gown is cut from the created lace fabric block and then attached to the simple lines of the gathered skirt. More lace edging trims the lower edge of the skirt. This cloud-like gown consists of short puffed sleeves and a round neckline trimmed with slightly gathered lace edging. The medium-length gown is accented by its high yoke bodice, appealing to almost everyone. Because this lesson is three full days, students are expected to reach a point in the construction that will encourage completion of the project. Because the first two days are spent constructing the gown, a sewing machine is a must. On the third day, Wendy will share with you hand embroidery accents such as featherstitch, bullions, and other heirloom embroidery techniques to further embellish the classic design of this elegant ensemble. A slip pattern is also included with the lesson and enough materials to create both are provided in this extensive, virtually overflowing kit. Matching lace patterns will be of the utmost importance and construction is geared to even the most novice of all seamstresses and seasoned professionals alike. Wendy shares her awesome construction tips plus traditional heirloom machine sewing techniques with you. Please have at least a basic knowledge of garment construction and hand embroidery when choosing this class.

10. "Ruban Bleu" Jewelry Roll
Debbie Glenn - 1 day (Machine)
Cost: $90.00 including kit
Embellished bags for needlework supplies and projects, often referred to as "sewing frivolities," were especially popular with Victorian ladies. The flap of this exquisite white linen, rolled case features a blue ribbon bow nestled above a satin stitched edge. Outlining, Richelieu bars, and blue organdy inserts add a touch of color and set off the design elements on this nostalgic bow case. In this six-hour class, students will learn how to prepare open areas, create stabilized bars, add insertion fabrics, and finish pre-cut edges using a shortened zigzag stitch. Debbie's simplified edge stitching technique eliminates the tedious application of a separate padding cord, yet produces a clean, stable edge without the stabilizer fuzzies often associated with machine work. Instead, a series of straight stitches pad and then later outline the satin stitch work adding dimension and camouflaging any minor stitch imperfections. After completing three small notebook samples, students begin work on a modern frivolity, which holds three pairs of embroidery scissors and has a generous pocket for additional storage or is customized to accommodate jewelry. Students are encouraged to bring their embroidery scissors to class so the pocket shapes can be adapted to accommodate their personal collection. Techniques will include Australian Windowpane, simplified satin stitched edges (one and two layer), stabilized Richelieu bars and edge stitching.
