HISTORIC BABY CLOTHES INFORMATION FROM The Modern Priscilla for June, 1912 (part four-continued from last week's newsletter)
Mother and Child
The nightgowns were of ordinary white flannelette at ten cents a yard. They required nine yards. I featherstitched around the neck and cuffs in blue silkoteen. The kimonos were blue and white striped and were also feather stitched. The shirts were fifty cents each. The bands were given me by my sister whose baby had discarded them. The diapers were of bird's eye cotton and each was marked with the woven initial to insure safety in laundry.
The baby's wrap was a long circular cape with a cape collar and hood attached. It was made of cream Bedford cord at $1.50 a yard. Two and a quarter yards were necessary, one spool of silk, two yards of cream sateen at thirty four cents, one fourth yard of China silk to line the hood, all made the cape cost about $4.25. The cape collar was unlined and had a spray of flowers embroidered in each corner. I was very proud of this simple, dainty layette. It cost but little and the garments were pleasing to look at. SEWING TIP FROM Claire Shaeffer, author, Couture Sewing Techniques
I'm passing along this tip from Zandra Rhodes: Use little gold safety pins to mark darts, etc. on chiffon, beaded or sequined fabrics. Pins with flower heads are flat and easy to use when you are working with a ruler and rotary cutter.
Extra fine pins are surprisingly easy to use when sewing heavier, densely woven fabrics as well as delicate materials.
SEWING TIP FROM KATHY ANDERSON
Subject: Sewing machine pincushion Simplicity Crafts #9076 has a pattern for a machine pincushion. It uses Velcro to attach to the sewing machine.
TIP FOR MACHINE EMBROIDERING ON FIBER GLASS SCREEN FROM CHERYL
I hoop my fiberglass screen. Then I float a piece of solvy on top and stitch away. I've embroidered lots of fiberglass screen and have found that it is one of the easiest "fibers" to embroider.
PERSONAL LETTER FROM MARTHA
Dear Friends,
God certainly blessed us in Orange Beach last week with the joy of our wonderful sewing school. What a fabulous group of students, teachers, and staff members! We had students from as far away as California, Las Vegas, Pennsylvania and Michigan. The length and breadth of the United States was represented right on the beach in Alabama.
I would like to thank everyone who attended this sewing school: the students, whose desire to learn made it possible; Viking for sending teachers -(Barbara Moore, Alix Graham-Michel, and Dianne Day); and Ken Mudge's Sewing Center for bringing the sewing machines and sergers. I certainly want to mention Viking's district manager, Margo Stuart, for being with us the whole school -- although she was on crutches! That is going beyond the call of duty.
I would also like to thank Kathy McMakin for teaching wonderful classes. Patty Smith not only organized all of the food but also assisted in teaching. Toni Duggar, Patsy Vaughn, and Charlotte Potter set up and managed the beautiful store, and David McMakin and Joe were very valuable helping in every way possible. I would like to thank my precious staff for the designing of the projects, then for doing the writing and layout of the directions which were given to the students.
Our sewing rooms looked out on the gorgeous Gulf of Mexico. Many of the ladies walked on the beach early in the morning. Several husbands accompanied their wives; it was fun to meet the "other halves" at our banquet Friday night. One of the ladies has a ministry sewing gowns for her local hospital. She was able to get the scraps from the classes with the idea of utilizing them in the baby gowns.
If you begin now, you have plenty of time to make someone a beautiful doll wardrobe before Christmas. Some of the ladies purchased our "ready made" doll dresses, along with books and fabrics and dolls which will be used to make hand-made dresses. We have decided that if you order your 18" Martha's Friends Dolls or your 13" Joanna's Friends Dolls before Thanksgiving Day, we will send you two dresses to fit each doll in addition to the outfit which comes on the doll!!

If you have already placed your order for either Martha's Friends or Joanna's Friends dolls, your two dresses will be included--you don't have to call again to remind us about your doll order. If you have not already ordered your new dolls (which will begin arriving later in November) please do so before Thanksgiving and you will get the two extra dresses as well as the outfit which comes on the doll. Hopefully, some of you will also have time to do some sewing for this doll and you, too, can have a whole wardrobe of doll clothing on Christmas morning. Even if you don't have time to sew, you can still have a wardrobe of three outfits!!
If you want our 23" Katherine Ruth, please call this week. I think all but about 30 of this limited edition are pre-sold and I don't want you to be disappointed.
I have not heard, yet, from the mission team, which returned yesterday from Africa. I will try to have news on next week's newsletter of what God did last week in Benin with the team's efforts. I am so appreciative of their going.
We are in the final stages of preparing a new book called Contemporary Heirlooms. This book is filled with clothing which the older girls in your family will really like -- and so will you. My granddaughters Morgan Ross and Bradley modeled these clothes in the fashion show in Arlington last summer and at our July School fashion show. The clothes are fashioned in the popular a-line dresses with short jackets -- very modern and very much styled like the garments in the stores. I should rephrase that to read "like the garments in the stores which are age appropriate and proper for girls to wear." We will let you know when it is ready. The book includes dresses, tops, skirts and pants. There are wonderful techniques; however, the most important fact about this book is that mother, daughter, and granddaughter all should like the clothes.
Our Martha's Quilt Academy pin is here. The cost is $5 and that includes shipping. You can order this pin even if you did not attend the academy. We have some beautiful new beauty pins, in silver and gold as well as other baby and children's jewelry.
Other great Christmas gift ideas are lace shaping boards, Gingher scissors (especially the ones with roses printed on them). This weekend I wore a zinger with a ribbon rose glued on the top and a pair of Gingher rose scissors attached to the zinger. The Gingher kindergarten scissors are the perfect present for those who love lace shaping. You can cut from behind the lace with less of a chance of cutting the lace itself. Many people give a subscription to Sew Beautiful magazine for Christmas gifts. One of the ladies at the Orange Beach School had given her daughter a membership in the IEC for Christmas.
Spending time at the beach gets me excited about going to Orlando for our Martha's Sewing Market in January. We will have pictures of the "Sit n Sew" projects on the website this week. The Market information can be viewed here -- remember, we will be at a new venue, The Expo Center in the Orlando Centroplex, right in downtown Orlando!
Don't forget that it is time to renew or join the 2003 Internet Embroidery Club. We have two fabulous antique bullion embroidery alphabets for 2003 (one upper case and one lower case) plus ten matching pieces ready for you to download right now. As I mentioned last week, in 2003 we are offering 26 machine embroidery designs in addition to your two alphabets. IEC members get great monthly sales on Martha Pullen products as well as antique photos, historic snippets and many other surprises.
Since the Internet Embroidery Club is a "calendar year" program, we maintain the designs for each club year on our website for "retroactive" memberships. The designs and alphabet for 2001 (see them here) and the designs and alphabets for 2002 (see them here) are $59 - for more information send an email to david@marthapullen.com or visit this web page.
Thank you for letting me visit with you each week. I enjoy writing this newsletter and we appreciate your sending your sewing tips and recipes and other comments.
May God Bless You
Martha

SCRIPTURE OF THE WEEK
1 Peter 5: 6-7
6. Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.
7. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.One of the ladies at Orange Beach last week-end said to me, "Martha, how does anyone get through one day without the Lord." She then revealed to me that her beloved husband, an education/music minister had died two years ago after a 13-year bout with cancer. She also shared that 13 years before he died, one physician gave him 6 months to live. That, however, was not God's plan for his life since he gave him 13 more years. She told about their Sunday school class's praying in an overnight vigil for him as they traveled to M.D. Anderson hospital in Houston for treatment. She told about God's blessings in having wonderful medical care and even experimental drugs, which had just been approved by the FDA for his type of cancer. Most of all she told about God's faithfulness throughout their lives, his death and her life since his death.
All through the Bible we are told to "cast our anxiety on him because he cares for you." Do not fear is written in the Bible 365 times I have been told. It seems that God put this statement in for every day of the year because he knows that we need to be told to not fear but to trust in him. May I close, today, with the last words of 1 Peter, which are "Peace to all of you who are I Christ."
ONE OF MY FAVORITE RECIPES
Easy, delicious Sweet Potatoes
Wash sweet potatoes well. Slice as you would for French fries (approx. 1/4" thick strips the length of the potato). Spray a cookie sheet with Pam. Place sliced potatoes in single layer, side by side on the cookie sheet and lightly spray the tops of the potatoes.
Place in a PREHEATED 450 degree oven for 10 minutes. Turn each over and replace in oven for five more minutes. Remove and immediately sprinkle lightly with salt followed by spinkling about 2-3 teaspoons of brown sugar. Toss. Eat while hot. (If you don't want them crispy, you need not turn them over. I rarely do, simply because it's a pain, and they are still great. We also do the same with Irish potatoes, sans the brown sugar. This is a great way to eat low fat, yet very nutritious potatoes.
