HISTORIC BABY CLOTHES INFORMATION FROM The Modern Priscilla for June, 1912 - Mother and Child - (part three)
The white underskirts required one bolt of long cloth at $1.65. The trimming for them was nine yards of embroidery with hemstitch edge at ten cents a yard, and the nine yards of narrow torchon lace at eight and one third cents, which I put on narrow tucked ruffles. Above the ruffles of these underskirts were clusters of small tucks. On some I feather stitched between the tucks. I made the skirts gathered to a yoke, the shoulders of the yoke being buttoned together. I did not find this any great advantage, however.
Two of the flannel skirts were plain with feather stitching on the hems. They required three yards of flannel at fifty cents a yard. The other three were of flannel with simple embroidered design above the hem. This bought at a sale cost sixty five cents a yard, a total of $2.93. The skirt which was given me was of beautiful flannel and was hand scalloped, with the tiniest of linen lace frilled in round the scallops. (To be continued next week...)
SEWING/FRAMING PROBLEM FROM LINDA DEFEO, FLORIDA
SEWING TIP FROM PAT CADYA friend from my Church has a family member who mounted her mother's christening dress from the late 1800's. She was shocked to find out that the framing company mounted the dress with glue! The dress started separating from the backing of the frame, so her sister carefully removed the rest of the dress from the glue and put the dress in the cedar chest. I told her to buy the non-acid paper and the non-acid box to store the dress. She is now excited about your magazine & TV program & wants to start sewing again. I watch your program faithfully & can't wait for my magazine to arrive. My husband brings in the mail & says " Lin, Martha Pullen arrived. "I chuckle and say "I wish"!!! I hope to see you in January at the Orlando show."
(NOTE FROM MARTHA: Linda, I have a beautiful christening dress framed in a shadow box and I had the framers stitch, by hand, the dress (the back, of course) to the mounting board. It was tacked in many places. Putting a dress in a shadow box is a great way of preserving the dress for everyone to enjoy. Please, if you frame the dress, write all details of the dress and put it in an envelope glued to the back of the frame. Otherwise, future generations might not have a clue to whom the dress belonged or the significance for the family. If you baste the dress, then it can be untacked for someone else to wear, if desired. The real challenge for our framers was keeping the dress beautifully pressed while taking it and framing it.)
I just read the last two newsletters on having the pin cushion handy. For many years, I've had at least 2 and now have 3 going at a time. One at the sewing machine, I use most, one at an older sewing machine that I use for basting, and one on the cutting table. Depending on what I'm doing at the time, when one gets filled up, I move the empty one to that space and keep rotating them as I go. There is always a pin cushion within reach.
SEWING TIP FROM MARTHA PULLEN
Years ago I discarded all pins except glass head pins, just in case an iron ever touched anything on which I was working.
LETTER FROM DOROTHY MURPHY, A MARTHA PULLEN HUSQVARNA/VIKING LICENSED TEACHER-ABOUT TEACHING GIFT OF THE MONTH CLASSES
I, too, am doing the Gift of the Month. For the October project (the small evening bag in black dupioni): I made a sample in the black for evening, as it was shown, and a sample in a tan suede cloth, with the design in fall colors, a tan leather strap, etc. so the ladies could see both possibilities. I'm always surprised at how many of us, who may have been sewing for some time, sometimes have difficulty visualizing possibilities beyond what they see. It made a big difference when I shared two totally different looks from the same pattern and embroidery design.
(2 Notes from Martha: 1. Dorothy's motto is "The kitchen is closed, check the sewing room." (Don't you love it?) 2. Dorothy's note reminded me to think outside the box concerning all sewing. As teachers and students I believe that is one of our main jobs and one of the greatest joys of sewing - visualizing possibilities beyond the exact project.)
PERSONAL LETTER From MARTHA
Dear Friends,
First, let me ask you to pray for the team of 14 people who are ministering in Benin, West Africa, with John and Suzanne. This team is led by Dr. Dick Thomassian and his lovely wife, Lois. The evangelistic team and the medical team will be ministering under difficult circumstances; please pray that the people will be reached with the love of Jesus Christ through their entire ministry. Please pray for God's strength for them and for safety while traveling. They left October 31 and will return November 10.
My Daddy's birthday was October 31. Although he went to be with the Lord about 20 years ago, he is always in my mind for so many things. He is the only person that I ever knew, personally, about whom I can say "I never heard him say one unkind word about another person." His grandfather, Rev. W.D. Ward, was a Methodist circuit riding preacher who came with 30 other Tennessee ministers to start the Methodist church in Alabama. My Daddy's grandfather was one of the greatest influences in his life and he always told me, 'Martha, my granddaddy told me if you can't say something nice about someone, don't say anything." I need to remember that every day of my life, not just on my Daddy's birthday. I need to work very hard to practice that principle.
This morning while I was doing my aerobics class at 5:30 am I was thinking about you, our precious friends and customers. There are several philosophic things I would like to share. One of the main joys of our having educational events and schools is knowing you look forward to them so very much. Everyone needs something to look forward to.
We have another goal in our business - to offer you new products and educational materials to bring the joy of sewing to you in an exciting, creative and professional way. We pray that our business products do just that in your life. We have another goal which is just as important: to treat you like a best friend when you call us or contact us in any manner. I have the world's best staff and they want you to be treated like friends when you order from us or just call us for other information. We want to be the business which brings you happiness in every way. We strive to meet these goals. We also want everyone to know that we are able to accomplish what we do by the grace and goodness of God and that God owns our business.
We will be in Orange Beach this week for our very first "Sewing at Orange Beach." We are so very excited since Joe and I have been talking about having a school in the Gulf Shores area for the whole 21 years I have been in business. Our staff members are already there, and Joe and I leave tomorrow. We can't wait! I'll let you know all about it next week. The truck is packed; I never shall forget packing all my household possessions in a U-Haul truck and driving from Gainesville, Florida, to Tuscaloosa, Alabama, to attend graduate school. The only disaster on my trip was pulling into a gas station with an overhang (which was too low) and bumping the top of the U-Haul truck. Thank goodness the truck was not hurt and the gas station ceiling did not fall!
The best Christmas present I ever received in my life was when I was 8 years old. When I awoke on Christmas morning there was a beautiful Toni doll and a whole wardrobe of doll clothes that my Mama had made all over the living room floor. I still have that doll and that wardrobe, but most importantly, I have the memories that Mama and I shared over that particular sewing project - one which lasted for her whole lifetime and will last for mine. Every year when I begin to get the Christmas spirit, which is always before Thanksgiving, I start thinking about that wardrobe of doll clothes and my Toni doll. But mostly those memories are about Mama and her sewing those clothes.
As Mama's memory began to fade, sometimes it was up to me to make up most of our conversations. One of the favorite things she loved to hear about was those doll clothes. She would light up and remember part of the wardrobe. If I talked about the hounds' tooth wool coat with the green wool lining, she would say, "But your favorite was the wedding dress." If I would talk about the swim suit she would remind me that there was a beach coat with the swim suit. She helped me make more clothes after Christmas. Since Mama taught school, she would have to wait until I went to bed to begin sewing those precious doll clothes. I would always tell her in the later years, "Mama, Joe has given me beautiful and expensive gifts for which I am very appreciative. But do you know the best Christmas present I ever received?" She would laugh and say, "Those doll clothes I made." I would say, "You're right."
I truly want you to consider making a wardrobe of doll clothes, with a matching brand new doll, for someone you love. Making a wardrobe of doll clothes for a new doll is more than just a Christmas gift. For me, it was literally a lifetime of memories for my Mama and me to share. You can make those same memories for any one you love from age 3-93, as long as she loves dolls. We have 8 gorgeous dolls for your Christmas giving which should begin arriving about the middle of November. Although we have another doll, Katherine Ruth, arriving next week, we do not have any specific doll dressing patterns to fit her. We have doll dressing books with patterns to fit both Martha's Friends (18") and Joanna's Friends (13"). Using these basic patterns you can be creative in planning your doll's wardrobe. Best of all, if you order now, you will, hopefully, have time to make this wardrobe like my Mama made for me in time for Christmas.
There are some very important facts about these VERY SPECIAL Martha's Friends and Joanna's Friends dolls.
1. They are from the German company, Gotz, the world's finest "play-with doll" company.
2. They are VERY LIMITED EDITION (only 400 worldwide of each doll). All of our other editions have been around 1500 for each doll. When these 400 of each doll are gone - that's it.
3. I will personally sign and number each of the Martha's Friends, the 18" doll.
4. Joanna, my daughter, and I will both sign (and they will be numbered, also) each of the Joanna's Friends, the 13" doll. Joanna's Friends are also limited to 400 worldwide.
5. We have doll dressing books with patterns to fit both the 18" and the 13" dolls. They can be ordered at half price when you order a doll.
6. They come dressed in their sweet little Gotz dress, panty hose and shoes, and each doll will come with a second FREE dress!
We have offered Martha Pullen/Gotz signed and numbered dolls for several years now. Very few of these signed and numbered dolls have even gone up for sale on e-bay. People are keeping these dolls for enjoyment and for future investments.
You can still get very low numbers if you order your dolls this week. We assign the numbers by the date and by the hour that the orders are received. You can order from the web site or call the 800 number to order or, of course, send a fax or e-mail to toni@marthapullen.com. Here are pictures and names of each of the dolls:

You just won't believe how many of our staff have lost from 15-35 pounds over the last 5 months. I need to follow their example. My sister, Mary, has joined in Scottsboro. She says one lady in her social work office has lost over 75 pounds this year with Weight Watchers.

SCRIPTURE FOR THE WEEK
Ephesians 5:4
4. Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving.
I am reminded of my Daddy's never speaking ill of anyone when I chose this scripture for this week. The Bible is filled with verses about our speech and what it reveals about our hearts. I must pray hard for the wisdom to only let words which reflect God's love come from my mouth. How can I be a witness to Him if unkind or unwise words come from my mouth?
PRAYER FOR THE WEEK FROM Dr Jim Daughdrill

(Meditation: Romans 12:2)
God, I have an important decision to make. I have thought through all the alternatives and possibilities. I have considered my own motivations. I have envisioned the consequences of each choice. I have done everything I know how to do to make the right decision. But I still can't make up my mind. Once I decide, I won't be able to take it back. God, slow my frenzied thinking. I put my decision in Your hands. I pray that Your will be done. Help me to trust . . . and to wait on You. Guide me to make the right decision. In Jesus' name. Amen.

MODERN RECIPE FROM JANE WINDBERG - This recipe is so easy...I hope you will try it yourself!
EZ Tasty Recipe - Mocha Trifle
You will need:
1 box fudge brownie mix 2 small boxes instant vanilla pudding 1 container Cool Whip 3 Heath toffee candy bars. 1) Prepare the brownies as directed on the box.
2) While brownies are cooking. Prepare the vanilla pudding with 1/2 cup strong coffee and the rest milk as directed on the package. That is, instead of 2 cups milk, use 1-1/2 cups milk and 1/2 cup coffee. Refrigerate to set.
3) While vanilla pudding is setting, whiz 3 bars of Heath candy in food processor (or chop fine) so you have little bits and pieces of toffee.
4) After brownies have cooled, cut into 1/2 inch cubes.
5) After pudding is set, prepare dessert in a crystal bowl by layering as follows:
Bottom: brownies followed by pudding with sprinkling of candy then cool whip.
Layer as many times as your bowl allows. Then top with cool whip and toffee. ENJOY!
