West Coast Sewing Extravaganza!!
|
![]() |
Are you ready for the week of your life? Then come on to California with us for the West Coast Sewing Extravaganza, November 12-15, 2009! In addition to the world's best teachers, we will have door prizes and GIFTS at each lunch and at the banquet. This will be a great place to bring your sewing friend to just have a girlfriend getaway. And sew until you drop! Since it is so close to Christmas, I might add that all of these projects will make great Christmas gifts! Just think! You will have your Christmas gifts started and have lots of new skills in addition to that!

The teachers will be Peggy Dilbone, Connie Palmer, Dody Baker, Alicia Welcher, Kathy McMakin and Martha Pullen! The four days of sit and sew have some of the best classes we have ever taught. And you licensed teachers who come to take these four days can use these classes to go home and teach to your students. The optional Wednesday night class (November 11) is our famous Little French Bonnet. Thursday's, Friday’s and Saturday’s classes are as follows: Top, Pajamas or Nightgown! Take your pick! (serger); Madeira Apron (machine); and Elegant Decorator Pillow (machine). The kits are gorgeous and include beautiful cotton fabrics, laces and trims. On Sunday, you have THREE classes: Serger Zippered Lingerie or What Not Bag; My Goodness, How Cute is This Drawstring Bag? (either little girl’s purse or lady’s gift bag); and Kitchen Towel Set - All Dressed Up and No Dishes to Dry!
There will be a Floriani Stabilizer Workshop Thursday night. I will present a “You Can Make Money from Your Hobby” Seminar Friday night. The banquet will be Saturday night. I will entertain you with hysterically funny stories that have actually happened to me during the 28 years I have been in the sewing business. I will lead an optional Sunday school class Sunday morning in the convention center from 7:30-8:30.
Everyone can come to shop during the store hours. There will be a 20% discount for everybody who comes to shop. The registered school students will get an additional 10% off while they are at the event. Please call 800-547-4176 ext. 105 to speak with Sis to register. Just a minute after this newsletter was finalized, I received word that the highly anticipated Retro Christmas Stitchin’ Machine Embroidery CD had arrived in our store, and I knew there was nothing else to do but hold the newsletter long enough to tell you about it. This CD is so delightful – I hope we ordered enough of them! At only $19.95 (IEC members pay just $14.00!), these fabulous designs for your 5” x 7” hoops will sell quickly. The 12 designs, digitized in 10 formats, resemble hand embroidery from the 1940s and 1950s – you know everything retro or vintage like that is very popular right now. Click here to see all of the Christmas Stitchin’ designs, including a sparkly holiday tree, a snowman bearing gifts, a beautiful wreath, an elegant candle, and a grouping of three vintage style ornaments. There’s also an individual vintage ornament, a holiday bell, a stack of presents, a gingerbread man, a snowman pushing a snowwoman in a sleigh, and a lovely girl carrying more presents than she can possibly hold! These are open work designs with selected elements stitched heavier, and the result is so authentic, they really do have that homespun charm of hand embroidery. But you don’t have to do the work of hand embroidery to get the look! In minutes, you’ll be able to decorate your own home for the holidays and make a mountain of gifts for family, friends and neighbors if you click here and order your Retro Christmas Stitchin’ Embroidery CD now. These designs will make wonderful teachers’ gifts; put them on your holiday apron; or transform a plain blouse into festive attire. I like the idea of decorating reusable gift bags with these designs, too. There’s just no end to the possibilities! Order your CD now and let the Christmas Stitchin’ begin! |

Regular price for all four leaflets is $28, but THIS WEEK you can have ALL FOUR for ONLY $15!
That is only $3.75 each when you buy all four!
Do you want the greatest present for your sewing friends for only $15? Or how about a wonderful present for yourself to make fabulous gifts? Click here to order all four of these fabulous leaflets for only $15.
I promise you, these are dynamite projects with great, great instructions. These four little leaflets contain all of the instructions for fun projects that are quick and easy.
The Chenille Teddy Bear Quilt you will love. Chenille bears, made of alternating layers of woven and flannel fabric, give this quilt extra snuggle power. The 12-square design is a combination of baby pastels, tan and white. Bear eyes are satin stitched, and the muzzle is appliquéd to the face with a machine heart nose. This leaflet has eight color pages and fabulous directions.
You will want to make a Baby Bunting for everyone on your new baby list. This project is very easy and adorable! Actually, this baby bunting is great for a baby doll, also, for that Christmas-morning-surprise doll for someone you love very much. Strategically placed buttons magically allow you to fold this flat quilt into a baby bunting. The vintage styling features two layers of gingham fabric with batting sandwiched between them, and it is bordered with gathered Victorian eyelet edging (so lovely). This leaflet has four color pages, and the project is VERY EASY to make.
The Bunny Love Changing Pad is just adorable to put on baby’s changing table. It can be made in any colors. We used calico fabric in baby colors and country quaint gingham. The 18” x 26” pad (not including the head and feet) buttons to a 10” x 13” size. The feet are pockets for storing handy travel-size lotion, wipes and other necessities.
Have you ever wanted to know how to make the easiest rag quilt ever? Just try this Reversible Whole-Cloth Rag Quilt pattern, and you will know how! This color 4-page leaflet shows you exactly how. We used redwork machine embroidery designs inspired by the 1920s on each square. It is the perfect quilt to make with your redwork designs. And it is easy and fun to make, and you can choose colors and embroideries to match your nursery.
All four project leaflets for just $15!
QUILTING TIP FROM ROSE WHITE
When I complete a set of sampler blocks for a quilt top, I lay out different arrangements and take pictures of each. Then after reviewing the pictures on the computer, I can print the favorite arrangement. I also test different border fabrics using digital pictures.
Note from Martha: Rose, I love this idea. I love to take laces and trims and play with them before deciding on the items to choose for heirloom dresses. Sometimes, if the laces are white-on-white, I will put a piece of colored construction paper behind them to get the true effect. After my first few heirloom dresses, I began to mix and match lace patterns for a beautiful look since many of my antique pieces do not have matching laces. I found that by playing with them I could get exactly what I wanted. The idea of photographing them is especially interesting with digital cameras today. I think our idea can be applied to more types of sewing in addition to quilting, too.
SEWING TABLE TIP FROM LAUREN MICHELIN
For those of you who don't have a sewing den or sewing room and use a dining room table, console table, kitchen table or even your husband's home office desk, here is a quick fix for ease of sewing. Cover these areas with an old fashioned mattress protector from a single bed (the felt kind of fabric). This pad will probably have elastic at each corner, and you can arrange them to tie together under the table top surface. Then put an old tablecloth or unused bed sheet over the top. Not only will this protect your lovely table surfaces, but it also will prevent your sewing machine from traveling across the table and will allow you to see your sewing accessories more easily. You can even put any pins into the fabric covering like a pin cushion.
Note from Martha: Lauren, this is an excellent idea since I sewed for about half of my adult life on either the kitchen table or the dining room table. I also wrote my first books on the dining room table with an old fashioned typewriter, of course.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS ON CARING FOR DOLL’S HAIR FROM THE MARTHAPULLENFANCLUB@YAHOOGROUPS.COM
Note from Martha: Over the last 10 years we have sold so many fabulous dolls. I thought you might like to see some of the ideas from the Fan Club on how to clean hair and dress dolls as well as display them. I might add that we only have a few of the Middleton Dolls left, and they are on a HUGE SALE to help us clear the warehouse getting ready for new products.
Q. What is the best way to care for their hair? My Dress Me Martha has gotten dust in her hair. She stays on my bookshelf next to my bed. I try to dust her periodically, but it seems as though her hair is still really dusty. Any suggestions on how to make her hair nice and shiny again?
A. We make porcelain dolls, so we have quite a few in our studio. We use a regular paint brush that's about 2-1/2” wide and another angled one that is about 1-1/2” wide. We brush off their hair, faces, and clothing to remove the dust. For hair, another good choice is a "baby brush." It has longer, soft bristles and won't scratch the doll or tangle the hair. Have fun taking care of your little one.
A. Connie, I have my DGD's toddler dolls - Joanna and Kathy (from 2007) and Julie Kate (from 2008); then my Angela doll (2008), my AG Bitty Baby, and three Madame Alexander baby dolls from my childhood. I have a wooden church pew along one wall in the living room, and they are lined up on it! Most of them are also holding a stuffed animal or toy. Martha has some doll clothes, t-shirts, jeans, jumpers, and a denim jacket that weren't made for the toddler dolls, but they do fit them. So, I bought us all the same clothes and wrote the name inside each piece. We each have a decorative cardboard suitcase under the church pew with our own clothes! The girls have a great time playing HOTEL! They take their doll and suitcase to the hotel & spa! Then when they go home, I sort them all out and repack for the next visit! I definitely think you should make Martha a Christmas dress and put her by your Christmas tree this year! She needs to been seen and enjoyed by everyone! Janet in Texas.
Q. For those of you who sew for your own personal dolls, how often do you change them, and where do you display them? It would be fun to make a different dress for Martha to change with each season (fall, Christmas, winter, Valentines, spring, Easter, summer, 4th of July, back to school, etc.), but Martha has always been in my room next to my bed where no one would ever see her.
A. My dolls are in the bedroom right now: Chuck suggested I put up a shelf, so I did! Now when he comes home all these girls are there in the bedroom, and he talks to them! When I brought the two new ones in, he said we needed another shelf, but I said that if they were standing, there would be enough room. Some of them are sitting down, because I don't have enough stands. I can't seem to locate stands that are strong enough and big enough for these toddler dolls. So I guess we have to make our own. When we went to bed we were talking about how to make a doll stand!
These absolutely beautiful limited edition dolls are now just $80 each (discounted 40% from the regular price of $140), plus $10 shipping (US only – international shipping may be more)! Designed especially for Martha Pullen Company by Reva Schick, you can purchase these dolls for a very special child to play with or to display in your own collection. There are four exquisite dolls, all toddler size: the gorgeous African-American doll named Angela Rose; Abigail Peyton with red hair and brown eyes; brown-haired and blue-eyed Julie Kate; and precious Anna Lynn with her blonde hair and blue eyes. Each doll is numbered and authenticated with a certificate signed by Martha Pullen. Don’t delay! We only have a few left! Click here to purchase your limited edition Middleton Toddler Doll.

Not only do you get the most wonderful designs for joining – IMMEDIATELY, AND THAT IS NOW - you also get designs throughout the year. Sometimes you get two gorgeous designs per month, and sometimes more when you get bonus designs.
Those of you who are members already know that the hundreds of beautifully digitized machine embroidery designs are NOT ALL you get with your club membership! You also get large discounts on all of our new Martha Pullen machine embroidery CDs! When brand new CDs come out IEC members get a large discount! YOU also get a sale every month on something wonderful from the Martha Pullen catalogue.
The GOOD NEWS is that you can JOIN RIGHT NOW and get an early bird discount on your 2010 membership. Regular membership is $59 per year; however, if you join now you can have the whole year of IEC membership for only $49! That’s right, only $49!
Right now, when you join, you can download 151 alphabet designs! This year’s alphabet is exquisite, elegant and quick to sew. You have a large floral uppercase alphabet (1.4” tall) with a sweet blue-eyed grass blossom (a member of the iris family) and a winding stem with leaves. It is delicate and beautiful. In addition to that, you have a plain version of this beautiful alphabet in uppercase and a coordinating lower case with numbers and symbols. You have numbers, an apostrophe, quotations marks, parentheses, a question mark, an exclamation point, a semi colon, a comma and a period — all digitized and waiting for your machine embroidered writing!
There are 10 absolutely gorgeous frames to be used around your alphabets! These have the coordinating blue-eyed grass blossom built into the designs. They are delicate and beautiful, too. You will love the four beautiful christening gown designs which can be placed in many different variations to make a small design on your gown, or when placed side by side the design could travel up the total front of the gown. These designs have the exquisite appeal of cutwork.
![]() The pattern for "Hope Danielle” Christening Gown can be found in the book "Best of Sew Beautiful Christening Gowns." Click here to order this book for only $39.95. |
The antique quilt redwork designs (24) are my absolute favorite that we HAVE EVER HAD!! For your hand towels or dishtowels, there are wonderful choices of dishes, grapes, flowers and a swan. There is a beautiful baby in an heirloom dress. For you University of Alabama fans there is an elephant! Roll Tide! (I just could not help inserting this since Kathy McMakin and I are both former cheerleaders for the Crimson Tide!) But this elephant, of course, is original from the antique quilt. There is a gorgeous swan and possibly my favorite two designs are the “Good Morning” and “Good Night” designs, which would be beautiful embroidered on bed pillows or on hand towels.

NOW LET’S GET TO MY TOTAL FAVORITE PART OF THIS YEAR’S IEC!! The paper dolls are the most adorable that we have had in 10 years. The paper dolls are my grandson, Marshall (now 15), and my granddaughter Anna Garrin (now 8), featured as a baby. You have been asking for more baby paper dolls, and this is your year. You will ADORE these clothes. Marshall was about two years old when these clothes were designed for him. There is a little button-on suit with a matching hat, which is so cute. Both Marshall and Baby Garrin have matching sailor suits. On the little 2-year-old boy suits, there are matching hats for nearly everything. Oh, how cute can Garrin’s baby things be? There are three christening dresses, a little tie-on daygown and a little dress with panty hose and English button-on shoes. There is even a little pink sweater and matching hand knit (I am sure hand knit) cap. There is a matching bonnet for nearly all of her outfits, plus little ribbons for the others. There is an Easter basket, a carrot car, a cat, and a duck in a blue striped shirt for the accessories. You absolutely have to have these paper dolls this year! They are the most precious we have ever had, I promise. Please click here to see all of the designs for 2010!

To get your 260 designs (that is right, I said 260 designs) for only $49 CLICK HERE! And know that you will get MORE designs every month, plus your sale prices on all new Martha Pullen CDs, plus more sales each month from the Martha Pullen catalogue! We can’t wait to have you renew your membership or become a new member of our embroidery club. Thank you for your unbelievable response for 10 years to our club. We love making it for YOU!
We are having the most incredible time at the VERY FIRST Heirloom I Licensing! We have friends who have been to Huntsville over 20 times to study with us who are students. We have new friends who are enjoying their first trip to Huntsville. I thought it was interesting that a couple of my friends (the over 25 timers) told me the first day that they had learned something they never knew before! Barb from Florida made her first lace shaped heart, and the whole class was jumping up and down. I have never seen anyone so excited about making a heart! And she has a new 2-week-old granddaughter!
I will have lots more news and pictures of this wonderful, wonderful licensed group next week also. We have loved our time together. I have something funny to tell you. The first day, Peggy Dilbone taught. One of the teachers said that Peggy was being very abusive since she gave them FOUR kits and instructions in one day! They were just kidding, of course. Who wouldn’t love four kits in one day laden with gorgeous fabrics and laces?
I can never thank Kathy McMakin and her licensing writing/designing team enough. This is without a doubt the most detailed and elaborate curriculum that we have ever had, and the students are absolutely in disbelief about the projects! There are several christening dresses, two ladies nightgowns, table linens, accessories for both home and baby — I could go on and on.
We have students from all over the United States, two from Canada and one from England. Some students have taken every licensing we have ever offered, and some are here for the first time. One of the best thrills of my sewing career is to see how new best friends are made at our events. It is thrilling to know that an individual can come totally alone and have a new best friend shortly at our events. You just cannot know the excitement of being in one of these groups. It is pure joy! Hard work but good work.
By the way, this is our last licensing for this year. YOU can join us for many licensings next year, and we want you to come to Huntsville. Here is the list for 2010 and we want you to be a student at any or all of them. Please call Karen at 800-547-4176 ext. 131 for more information. Our licensings fill quickly, so it is a great idea to call as quickly as possible.

With the thanksgiving season quickly approaching, I always think about the wonderful years of preparing to go to Mama and Daddy’s house in Scottsboro. It is now my turn to be the house for a visit, and I can’t wait to get out my “Hobby Lobby fall leaves” and my orange candles and my little thanksgiving table decorations. I usually get a pumpkin or two to have around the house. I always decorate the adult table and the kids’ table.
Sometimes I make the kids’ table even prettier than the adult table. I have even purchased a large turkey platter shaped like a turkey, which I found on sale half price at a local shop. I bake my turkey in a large Reynolds Wrap® turkey bag, and it is always as moist as can be. This is the easiest way for me to cook a turkey. I always dried them out when I cooked with a roaster. I love that little thermometer in the turkeys today. Mama used to have to put a meat thermometer in her turkeys. I will never forget that Daddy loved to carve the turkey at the table. I just wish I had learned the proper way to carve a turkey from him. I carve the turkey before it leaves the kitchen but not until all have seen the whole turkey coming out of the oven.
I am so thankful for each of you receiving this newsletter. I pray for you and your family. I know many of you are in need of healing at this very moment, and I pray for healing mercies for you. I know many of you are troubled at this time, and I pray for emotional healing and family situation healing for you.
I pray for our men and women serving in harm’s way and for their families. I pray for our President and Vice-President and men and women serving in Congress. I pray for them to turn their eyes to God and seek His wisdom in making important decisions, which affect not only people in the United States but also people all over the world. I appreciate each of you more than you will ever know. You are dear sewing friends, and I wish I could deliver this letter personally to your door and visit with you a little while. Thank you for all you do for me personally and for Martha Pullen Company. This company exists for the glory of God and for YOU. Without God and YOU, there would be no Martha Pullen Company. I am totally grateful. And thankful. I send my love as always.
May God Bless You,
Martha

Psalm 55:6
6 …Oh that I had wings like a dove! [For then] would I fly away and be at rest.
I think this is similar to running away from home. Joe and I used to say that if either of us left we had to take all five of the children. John tells Suzanne, “If you leave, I’m going with you.” Sometimes, it is necessary to dream about “flying” away from life situations. I also call that “wishing them away.” The world pushes in on me a lot, and I feel absolutely sure that you are experiencing the same thing. From my years of living, I think that has always happened in my life - sometimes more than others, of course. Oh, how I remember thinking that I would never finish my Ph.D. I remember the pain of losing loved ones. I just wanted the pain to go away. Difficult times make me weary and sometimes anxious to escape. During those times in my life, I have found that only God could “make it all better,” as my Mama used to tell me. I think of the words from one of my all-time favorite songs, “Jesus Loves Me.” It clearly says, “Little ones to him belong; we are weak, but He is strong.” Oh, how true that little song is! In my weakest, saddest times God has indeed carried me. That was a whole lot better than trying to fly away. When I rest in Him I can call upon His power, not mine. He indeed renews my strength and shows the way even when it is not my way. With His glorious love for me, I don’t have to squawk around the barnyard like a chicken, but indeed I can fly like a dove.
