West Coast Sewing Extravaganza!!

GENERAL INFORMATION CLASS INFORMATION CLINICS AND SEMINARS REGISTRATION INFORMATION

I am so excited about getting back to California, November 12-15, for the West Coast Sewing Extravaganza with Husqvarna/Viking! In case you don't know all about our location at the Pasadena Convention Center, I'll just tell you. It is right across the street from one of the nicest shopping centers that I have ever seen. There is a PF Chang and other wonderful restaurants from fast food for a quick lunch or snack to elegant for your evening meals. My favorite "place" in this shopping center is the Cold Stone Ice Cream Store! You have to try their vanilla cream with pecans all mixed in on the marble slab! One year, one of the groups sent a lady across the street to bring me one of these huge ice cream cones to present to me before dinner. Ice cream before dinner! We have the best time in California, and YOU HAVE TO COME JOIN US! Don't forget that I am teaching everybody part of a class.  Licensed teachers, you get to use these six projects in your classes. Everyone who comes to shop will get 20% off in the store (which is a great discount), but everybody who is taking the classes will get an extra 10% off! Call Sis at 800-547-4176 ext. 105 and join us. We already have a fabulous crowd coming; please register before the classes are full. See you in Pasadena, my California home.

P.S. One year, they were having a movie opening night at the auditorium part of this convention center. Lots of stars showed up on the red carpet. We watched from the shopping center across the street! You never know what will happen in California! Click here to read the whole brochure in PDF format.

Sewing Tips

SEWING TIP FROM THE INTERNET
I have a shelf about 6" deep behind my sewing machine.  On the front of the shelf I attached a metal strip that I picked up from the hardware store. I stuck a strong bar magnet to the metal.  I keep various needles on the magnet along with my screw driver for changing needles and embroidery foot.  Talk about handy!  Even my small scissors sometimes end up there.

SEWING TIPS NEEDED!!! PLEASE SEND SEWING TIPS TO martha.pullen@yahoo.com! Please send pictures of your projects. Our newsletter readers love to see what you have made.

GORGEOUS CHRISTENING DRESS FROM LISA FEOR
I just finished a christening gown as a gift for a young couple's first baby.  I have attached pictures of the dress and slip.  The parents requested a more tailored 27" long dress for their son, and this dress is the result. I got out my copy of French Sewing by Machine II and used Heirloom Party Dress as the pattern.  I thought about my teachers over the years, and I could almost hear Dr. Cornelia Anderson when I was sewing the lace to the fabric.  I could hear Mrs. Elizabeth Travis Johnson when I re-drafted the bodice to make the slip. But most of all, Martha, I could hear you.  From "Baby Figgy" to "three feet away on a galloping horse," I have learned so much from you. Thank you, Martha, for sharing this wonderful world of heirloom sewing with me.  I can't imagine my life without it.

GLORIOUS CHRISTENING DRESS FOR SANDI’S GRANDCHILD
This gown was made for the one and only grandchild that I will ever have. He was born premature at 27 weeks and spent six months in ICU with the determined dedication of his parents. His mother, my daughter, is a diabetic. He is now 15 months old and has progressed to about 10 months.

Martha's Letter

Dear Sewing Family,

I want to tell you about the “Baby Figgy” stories and the “three feet away on a galloping horse” stories that Lisa referred to in her letter accompanying her gorgeous christening dress pictures. “Baby Figgy” refers to the fact that I used to tell students I was sewing for “Baby Figgy” - in other words, a figment of my imagination. That was when I was sewing baby clothes and had no grandchild to wear them yet. Not to worry, I now have 18! The “3 feet away on a galloping horse” refers to my telling students to put their work three feet away from their eyes and see if it did not look perfect. As my grandmother used to say, “You’ll never see it on a galloping horse.” That statement was made after my students were such perfectionists that they would put their work underneath a magnifying glass and say, “I see a mistake.”  I say, move it out three feet.  You won’t see any mistakes.  Move on and enjoy the sewing ride.

We said goodbye to an incredible group of newly licensed Viking III teachers last night. We had a going away party at our house, as always. The teachers loved going to my real attic and looking at the massive numbers of clothes, books and magazines. They especially loved seeing my mother’s green wedding dress.

These wonderful teachers are on their way back to their homes. It is my prayer that many of you will get to take these fabulous classes which they will be offering as soon as they have time to finish their projects. Once again, I thank Husqvarna/Viking for underwriting this event. We thank Peggy Dilbone and Connie Palmer for excellent teaching and massive help. Both are Viking educators and travel extensively for Viking. How can I ever thank Doris Trout and Alice Betterton for their help doing everything? LaQuinta Schum comes to nearly every Martha Pullen event to help with the teaching and most importantly the fitting of individuals. She is a fitting and pattern drafting master. Thank you, LaQuinta. Angela Jones and Betty Ludwig (MPC staff) worked until they dropped and then worked some more. Thank you for weekend after weekend of work. All of the staff at the warehouse, headed this week by Patti Carrigan, kept the orders coming in on a regular basis. I loved signing so many books and CDs. Many of the rest of our staff helped with the pizza/shopping night.

We had a fabulous graduation with everybody getting an A+ and graduating. We always sing the graduation song - well a version of it - and everybody sort of dances up to get her certificate.

Once again, I thank Joe for all of his help getting the house ready. Precious Viking III class, I love you and send my love and best wishes as you travel home and start or grow your businesses. Please come back again as soon as possible. Thank you for taking the MPC message out around the United States and Canada—with this group.

Joe, Patti Smith and I took Kevin (Patti’s grandson and Houston’s best friend), Houston, Chase and Cecil on a one day staycation this week. We love staycations. In our house, this means a trip to somewhere fabulous with no hotel bills or expensive plane tickets. We usually try to make the trips with only a two hour or less drive to the location. Our schools are out for fall break. We went to the Tennessee Aquarium and the Chattanooga Choo Choo. I also took them to Ferger Place, the neighborhood where we lived when I was three years old and we lived in Chattanooga for two years. Mama had a kindergarten in our basement when I was five years old. If you have not been to the Tennessee Aquarium, please go if you are close enough. It was beyond fabulous. It was fun to go to the Choo Choo. I remember vividly sitting in the train station with those high ceilings, waiting for my grandparents to arrive on the train from Scottsboro. My father was a vice president of Fleetwood Coffee Company, headquartered in Chattanooga. Chattanooga has many memories for me, including Joanna’s ninth grade year as a student at Baylor School. She loved Baylor but was just too young to be away from home, so she only stayed one year.

Cecil and Chase love to ride horses at their Dad's farm. He sent me this picture this week.

California, here we come!! And lots of you are coming, too!! I asked Joe if he were going to come, and he replied, “This is not a necessary trip for me, and I think Bobbin would be too lonely.” Those of you who have a little pet that you adore know exactly what I am saying. I talked with Mary K who was a student here this week, and she said she and her husband do not like to travel together since their “little baby (dog)” would have to go to a sitter; however, it is time for YOU to sign up for our West Coast Sewing Extravaganza with Husqvarna/Viking, November 12-15! Here is a list of our table top presentations which will be Thursday night: Hand Smocking; Using the Smocking Pleater; Wing Needle Techniques; Continuous Hoop; Tips and Tricks for Machine Embroidery; Personalize It!; Spanish Hemstitching; Serger Feet; Adding Sparkles & Lace Painting; Cute Socks; Software, Software, Software; and other surprises! And these are just the table top demonstrations for one night!

The four days of sit and sew have some of the best classes we have ever taught. And you licensed teachers who come to take these four days can use these classes to go home and teach to your students. The optional Wednesday night class is our famous Little French Bonnet. Thursday’s, Friday’s and Saturday’s classes are as follows: Top, Pajamas or Nightgown! Take your pick! (serger); Madeira Apron (machine); and Elegant Decorator Pillow (machine). The kits are gorgeous and include beautiful cotton fabrics, laces and trims. On Sunday, you have THREE classes: Serger Zippered Lingerie or What Not Bag; My Goodness, How Cute is This Drawstring Bag? (either little girl’s purse or lady’s gift bag); and Kitchen Towel Set - All Dressed Up and No Dishes to Dry!

There will be a Floriani Stabilizer Workshop Thursday night. I will present a “You Can Make Money from Your Hobby” Seminar Friday night. The banquet will be Saturday night. I will entertain you with hysterically funny stories that have actually happened to me during the 28 years I have been in the sewing business. I will lead an optional Sunday school class Sunday morning in the convention center from 7:30-8:30.

Everyone can come to shop during the store hours. There will be a 20% discount for everybody who comes to shop. The registered school students will get an additional 10% off while they are at the event. Please call 800-547-4176 ext. 105 to speak with Sis to register.

Being a total school teacher at heart, I am always thrilled to offer another educational DVD. Our newest, with construction master Lezette Thomason of Children’s Corner, is ready to ship! This DVD’s title is, “Add a Little Smocking,” and Lezette shows you many, many ways to add smocking to existing patterns. She gives lessons on redrafting the garment front; tracing and marking; pleating the fabric; cutting out and stabilizing; redrafting back garment for pleats; drafting a knife pleat; making a knife pleat, bishop collars and magic bindings, as well as offering lots of inspiration. You will adore learning from this very popular teacher, and you can rewind and rewind to have the lesson over and over again. Please click here to order.

I almost never add something to go view from the Internet to this letter; however, for those of you who are grandparents, please just click here to enjoy. You will love it, and it says things which I wish I had thought of to say myself. As you already know, there is nothing like grandchildren. Looking at the lady holding her newly born granddaughter, I thought about a story I would like to share with you. As a surprise to my son John and his wife Suzanne, the adoption agency in Mississippi called me the day they knew for sure that Rebekah was going to be adopted. I was in Gulf Shores at the time, and I jumped in the car for a long five or six hour drive to Jackson. John and Suzanne did not know that I was coming. The social workers hid me in a back room, and when they brought in Baby Rebekah, John and Suzanne for a gorgeous ceremony, there I was - in tears, of course. Before the ceremony began, Suzanne said, "Mom, I want you to hold her during the ceremony." They allowed me to hold Rebekah while the most beautiful prayers were said and scriptures were read. This is one of my most important grandmother memories. Now, please click and enjoy these grandparent pictures and quotes. http://www.grandparents.com/gpday2009/index.html?utm_source=Newsletter&utm_medium=Email&utm_content=GPday09

I pray for our men and women serving in harm’s way and for their families. I pray for our president and all of our elected officials in Washington as they make critical decisions in so many areas. I pray for you and your family in whatever you are facing this week. May God hold you very tightly as you make decisions for you and your family. I especially pray for those of you who are sick and hurting. Please know that I care. Please remember 2 Samuel 22:3 “…He is my shield, the strength of my salvation, and my stronghold, my high tower, my savior, the one who saves me from violence.” Please know how deeply I appreciate your letting me come to your home each week. Please know how grateful we are for your loyalty through the years. It is because of God’s goodness and faithfulness and because of your loyalty that we are able to bring you wonderful sewing events and products. Thank you.

May God Bless You,
Martha

Scripture for the week

Genesis 1:20-23

20 And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven.
21 And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good.
22 And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth.
23 And the evening and the morning were the fifth day.

As we walked through the Tennessee Aquarium last week, I was in total awe of the creatures that God has created. The fish were every color under the sun, every shape; one even looked like a tree! There were sea horses, frogs, otters—thousands of species. As I looked in the huge tanks I emphasized over and over to the children about God’s sense of humor in creating such interesting things and about God’s being such a great artist. I also mentioned to the children about how smart God is to have made all of these fish and other creatures we saw on that wonderful day in Chattanooga. I loved telling them once again that God created the heavens and the earth. God created such an incredible universe. I am committed to mentioning to my grandchildren in every way possible about God’s goodness to us also in letting us go on this wonderful day to Tennessee. I try to mention about thanking God for giving us “hamburger money” when we drive through McDonald’s to get a hamburger. As I walked for several hours through that aquarium I thanked God over and over for being in total control of everything. And I thanked him over and over for his faithfulness to me and to my family, including my sewing family.

Wake up to a crisp fall morning with Pecan Pancakes for breakfast. For more recipes like this, see the August/September issue of Taste of the South.

Pecan Pancakes

Yield: 12 small pancakes
Preparation: 10 minutes
Cook: 6 minutes per batch

2 cups all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons light brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup chopped pecans, toasted
1 cup milk
2 large eggs, separated
1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
1/4 cup vegetable oil
Additional butter (optional)
Syrup

In a medium bowl, combine flour, brown sugar, salt, and pecans. Set aside.

In a separate bowl, combine milk, egg yolks, and butter. Add milk mixture to flour mixture, beating at medium speed with an electric mixer until smooth. Set aside.

In another bowl and using clean beaters, beat egg whites at high speed until soft peaks form. Gently fold egg whites into flour mixture until combined.

In a large nonstick skillet, heat 1 tablespoon vegetable oil over medium heat. Spoon 1/4 cup batter for each pancake into skillet. Cook until lightly browned, 2 to 3 minutes per side. Repeat with remaining oil and pancake batter.

Serve pancakes warm with additional butter and warm syrup.
