SEWING TIP OF THE WEEK

Wash Away Basting Thread Tips:

Use pill bottles and one of those little silicon packages that come in shoe
boxes - keeps the thread from getting gummy - even here at the beach!

PERSONAL LETTER FROM MARTHA

Dear Friends,

Thank goodness I have good news to report from our children in Africa.
Suzanne is healing nicely although her IV was not put in correctly and her
arm still hurts pretty badly. They will stay in Africa until the end of
August and come home for furlough as planned about September 1. Thanks so
very much for your prayers for Suzanne as well as for Christopher. God is
so faithful.

We have so much exciting news happening at Martha Pullen Company. Only 2
more weeks are left before the school. Many of you are packing your bags
right now. If any of you want to read about the classes, please go to
www.marthapullen.com and you can see everything we will be studying. Joanna
is so excited about teaching in the kid's school. She has all of her
projects ready with "story teaching boards" to make the projects super easy.
We have ordered both the baby dolls and the sweet little daygowns
and pantaloons which will be packed with each Gotz doll. We are not ready to
take orders yet, but the dolls will be on the web site soon and you will be
the first to be able to call in your orders. We have first come, first
served for the numbering of the dolls. There will, of course, be a book of
beautiful patterns to make heirloom clothing for the baby dolls. We hope to
be shipping no later than October 15, 2001. Anyway, they will be here in
plenty of time for Christmas.

This would be a great time to join the Internet Embroidery Club if you
haven't already done so. About September 1, 2001 we will have the most
gorgeous Christmas embroidery CD you have ever seen. It will not be
available to anyone other than IEC members until after Christmas. As you IEC
members already know, you get a huge discount on the new embroidery CD's;
you purchase our $90 CD's for $49. IEC members also get a monthly sale on at
least 2 Martha Pullen products. Please go to the web site to join the IEC or
call david @ 800-547-4176 ext 104.

We are getting new travelers every day for our Christmastime in London
tour, November 28-December 7, 2001. Joe and I will be your hosts for the
trip along with other staff members and our dentist son, Mark, and his
gorgeous wife, Sherry Ann. I don't know who is more excited, Mark or Joe!
Truly this will be our best trip ever. We are doing everything we loved best
from last year's trip and have added new things which the group voted would
be fun to do. We have a much nicer hotel right in the middle of London
shopping. Please go to the web site to read all about this trip of a
lifetime. I think Joe and I are going to rent Elizabethan costumes for the
Hatfield House banquet night at Henry VIII's house. You don't have to wear
Elizabethan costumes, but lots of people did last year. When we told Mark
about wearing an Elizabethan costume, he replied, "Does that mean I have to
wear panty hose and bloomers?" Actually, that is one way of describing
Elizabethan men's wear. I am especially excited about seeing Queen
Victoria's wedding dress on exhibition at Kensington Palace. It is the 100
year anniversary of her death and not only is her wedding dress going to be
on exhibition, but also many of her personal things.

We are still registering people for the Pfaff licensed teacher program for
October 2-9, 2001. This is the opportunity of a lifetime to start your own
business for a very small investment. We have had many people come for
licensings - not only for Pfaff, but also for Bernina, Janome and Viking. If
you love Pfaff and think you would love to teach sewing, coming to this
licensing is one of the best starts you can get for establishing a sewing
business. We have something very special for the Friday night of this Pfaff
licensing. About 10 couples are giving a debutant party at our house for
Julie McMakin, Kathy and David's daughter, before she is presented at the
Symphony Orchestra Ball. Of course all the Pfaff attendees will be included
in this lovely event. We will have another bar be que at our house one night
and our banquet will be, as always, at the beautiful and elegant Huntsville
Heritage Club. It will be the week of a lifetime for those people interested
in becoming Martha Pullen/Pfaff licensed teachers. Call Kathy McMakin at
800-547-4176 ext. 108 for more information.

The quilt book is nearing completion. You can call Toni at 800-546-4176 ext. 117 to order yours. We should be shipping by August 15, 2001. The book has 19 projects including 17 quilts and 2 pillows. Trust me when I say that this book has some of the most gorgeous quilts, of both heirloom and traditional quilting, that I have ever seen. Lots of the quilts feature machine embroidery in so many different ways.

The title of the book is Martha's Quilts. There are 3 complete 9 square
heirloom quilts from our television series, "Martha's Sewing Room." There
are many other darling quilts and many different techniques. Most of the
quilts have wonderful machine embroidery built in! The book has about 120
pages with pattern sheets folded in the back of the book for templates. The
price is only $19.95 plus $5 shipping. You can place your order right now
with toni@marthapullen.com and we will ship yours in August. We are thrilled
about the price of only $19.95 for 17 quilts and 2 pillows. By popular
request, we have pulled two quilts from books which are no longer in print
from Martha Pullen Company for this book. The shadow applique quilt has
blocks with memories from a little girl's life. I chose events from Joanna's
life. Each block commemerates events such as birth, first tooth, first word,
first recital, first step, first birthday, and so on through marriage. It
could be for a little boy also but you might have to add a couple of blocks
and leave out a couple which are there such as first recital. By popular
request we have also included the appliqued Mother Goose quilt from one of
our out of print books. This new quilt book has everything "quilty" from
traditional pieced wall hangings to 9 block heirloom quilts with every
imaginable technique in the blocks. Just wait until you see the heart
heirloom 9 block quilt and "Blue Danube," which is also a 9 square heirloom
quilt. We have wanted to write a quilt book for a long time and we believe
this one is sure to please.

I have a big secret to tell you about. We are thinking about taking a
group of people to Australia in 2002 for a big Martha Pullen 3 day sewing
school plus four days at my favorite sewing consumer show in Sydney. There
you would be able to take classes (45 minutes each - kind of like those at
our Martha's Sewing Markets) from Australian teachers. If we do this we will
be joined by 60 Australian sewers for the Martha Pullen sewing school. My
question to you today is this? How many of you receiving this e-mail are
from Australia or New Zealand? If you are, please e-mail me back at
marthap@marthapullen.com with the subject of the e-mail "I live in
Australia" or "I live in New Zealand." If you are Americans and would be
interested in the Australian trip in late 2002, please send an e-mail to the
same address with the subject "Australia Interest." We are just beginning to
work on plans for this event. It has been nearly 15 years since I made my
first trip to Australia and New Zealand. I would like to take some of you to
my favorite places. After the time in Sydney, we probably will go to
Queenstown, New Zealand, for a couple of days - it is the most beautiful
place in the world that I have ever seen in all of my life.

We are going to have the absolutely best California School you can ever
imagine. The brochures have gone out to many people, and new students are
signing up each and every day. Pasadena here we come! I would like to thank
Husqvarna/Viking for their underwriting this school. If you want to come to
our California School November 14-17, 2001, please call 800-547-4176 ext.
105. You can read about it by going to www.marthapullen.com.
Many of you have asked about how you get our television series, Martha's
Sewing Room, to be aired on your PBS station. You need a lot of people to
request it. To request that our show or any other show be aired on your PBS
station, go to our web site and click on Martha's Sewing Room from the home
page. Then you can click to go to the PBS web site and you can enter your
zip code. You can write a note making any request you want to. We have
filmed 26 brand new shows and the main patterns which will be featured will
be two women's suits, two skirts and two blouses. Of course we have lots of
heirlooms and the beautiful Blue Danube quilt as well as antique clothing
each week in the attic. The Blue Danube quilt is found in the new quilt
book, Martha's Quilts.

Mama is doing well, I am pleased to say. We have hired private help with
her in the assisted living for about 7 hours a day to give her extra
assistance. I took her back to the neurosurgeon last Monday to see if things
are still the same. The results aren't back yet but I think probably no more
surgery is indicated. We go to the opthomologist tomorrow morning to see if
her vision can be improved. After her last stroke, her vision is very bad.
She continues to say how blessed she is to have so many people who love and
care for her. She always thanks God for being so good to her and to our
family. She has always been my hero but even more every day of her life as
she faces health hardships without one word of complaint. It is my great
privilege to care for her at this stage of her life. I am blessed to have my
baby sister, Mary, who helps me with caring for Mama. Joe, Joanna, and
Sherry Ann are also blessings to go see her as often as possible and take
the children. Your prayers for my Mama over the years have been appreciated
so very deeply. Mama was so instrumental in helping get this business going
for the first years - really as long as she was able. Many of you remember
her wonderful home cooked meals she used to make for all who came to
Huntsville. Even after she could not cook the large banquet meal for 60
people, she still made about 10 homemade cakes for desert. Hopefully, she
will be able to come to the banquet this year. She made the sweetest speech
at the February banquet. Of course there was not a dry eye in the house when
she finished. She doesn't talk much anymore but she loves to go anywhere in
her wheelchair. If she is able to come, at the fashion show we will have
four generations of our family - Mama, Joanna, Cecil, Morgan Ross, Bradley
and me.

Thank you for the privilege of coming into your home each week. You are
truly my friends and I look forward to writing this newsletter as much as
anything else I do. I think all week about news to tell you and about things
you might like to know about. I appreciate your sending sewing tips and
recipes to share. I thank all of you for your letters you send to
marthap@marthapullen.com and for your prayer support. Please feel free to go
to our prayer board on the web site. We also have a wonderful message board
with lots of good sewing information. It is a lot of fun to see what kinds
of sewing news you have to share.

In His Service,

Martha

SCRIPTURE OF THE WEEK
Matthew 6:10
Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Dr. Henry and Richard Blackaby have written a new book (which I am
devouring) as a book of leadership for me in my business. It may be Dr.
Blackaby's best book so far other than Experiencing God. He talks about
leadership both in the business world and in the spiritual world.
"According to the Bible, God is not necessarily looking for leaders, at
least not in the sense we generally think of leaders. He is looking for
servants." I would like to quote directly from the book.

"Is it possible for God to guide leaders so that their actions, and even
their words, are not theirs, but his? Yes. Does God have an agenda for what
he wants to see happen in the workplace? He does. Our prayer should be that
which Jesus instructed his dicples to pray, 'Your kingdom come, your will be
done, on earth as it is heaven.' If Christians around the world were to
suddenly renounce their personal agendas, their life goals and their
aspirations, and begin responding in radical obedience to everything God
showed them, the world would be turned upside down. How do we know? Because that's what first century Christians did and the world is still talking
about it."

So many of you have written to ask me to recommend books. This one is
beyond fabulous. Spiritual Leadership by Dr.'s Henry and Richard Blackaby.
It is available at Christian bookstores all over the world. It is a book
not to be just "read" but to be studied over and over. I love this book.

RECIPE OF THE WEEK

Since I have rejoined Weight Watchers, I am looking for low calorie, low
fat recipes to share. The first week I lost 4 pounds but with the fourth of
July holiday and homemade ice cream, I doubt that I will lose anything this
week. Anyway, I am back at Weight Watchers.

Dilled Baked Fish

2 pounds fish fillets
butter-flavored no stick cooking spray
2 teaspoons chopped parsley
1 teaspoon dill weed

Spray a baking dish with butter flavored no stick cooking spray. Arrange
fish fillets in the dish, then spray the fillets with the butter-flavored
spray. Sprinkle with the parsley and the dill weed. Cover tightly with
foil. Bake at 400 degrees for 30 minutes. 8 servings - 2 grams fat per
serving

From "Live, Don't Diet" cookbook sent to me by Vicki Park who lost 165
pounds with this low fat diet. The cookbook has 242 pages of wonderful low
fat low calorie cooking. The regular price is $16.95 but Vicki will send it
to our e-mail friends for $16 (no extra shipping charges.) Thanks Vicki for
sending me this inspirational book with the before and after picture of
Vicki and her husband who lost 70 pounds. Congratulations!
