SEWING TIP FROM MY GRANDDAUGHTERS IN AFRICA

The kids were so excited about the sewing school. Thank you for doing it and for signing them up. Sarah Joy has told so many people about her sewing school last summer and showed all her projects and trophy to so many people. Both of them love it when I set up the machine and let them sew to their hearts' content. They had decided to make us a quilt for Easter (or something) and worked all week cutting and patching it together. I was really surprised - they even took some scraps of Veggie Tales fabric and cut out the figures and kind of appliqued them on the top - all on their own without any input from me because they wanted it to be a surprise. They were really cute and it came out for a little "dresser scarf" instead of a full quilt.

SEWING TIP FROM MARTHA

Have you tried pinless lace shaping? It is really so very easy. Use a little KK2000 to "glue" your fabric to your tear away stabilizer. Just draw your shapes on your fabric, straight stitch or tiny zig zag the outside of the lace shape on to the fabric. If you need to pull the gathering thread for curving, do so after stitching the outside. If you need to put in your miters, just fold them in. After finishing the inside edges by either mitering or curving, straight stitch them down. If you would like to do a wing needle machine entredeux or pinstitch, stitch right over the straight stitching you have already done.

LETTER FROM MARTHA

Dear Friends,

Joe and I have just unloaded the car from our week of recording Martha's Sewing Room in Tuscaloosa. I thank God for the opportunity of recording this television series for you - we have completed a total of 208 shows in the last eight years. We have 26 new ones for you this year. I would like to thank Wild Ginger Software (Click and Sew), Cactus Punch, Sulky of America, Rowenta and Sew Beautiful magazine for underwriting this series. I would especially like to thank the University of Alabama Center for Public Television and Alabama Public Television for recording our series. Special thanks go to all of our sewing machine companies for sending educators and for designing fabulous projects. Thanks to our two hand embroidery teachers, Kathy Neal and Beverly Sheldrick. Beverly came all the way from New Zealand to teach silk ribbon by hand. Super special thanks go to my precious staff for designing projects, sewing pieces (millions it seems like) for my teaching boards and demonstrations, planning and coordinationg all of the shows, and working so hard backstage to have each show ready and ironed to place in front of me when the time comes. There are probably 12 University of Alabama employees working every minute the recording is "happening." We have at least five or six of my staff working backstage all day. We have, most of the time, at least one guest preparing her projects and "pieces" to come on camera. I am on the set all of the time, of course. The last night we all went to a restaurant to celebrate recording 26 new shows. After thanking God, to whom goes all of the credit for the whole project, I was able to thank our whole group for a job well done. Under the able direction of Dwight Cameron, the University has the nicest, most talented group of people assembled for this job each and every year. I truly hope to record this show for 22 more years. There is a lady in Canada who has recorded a sewing television show for over 30 years and I want to do the same thing!

Friday morning, about 10am something told me to call home to check on everything. I found out that Mama had fallen and bruised and cut herself up a little - not much, thank God. The able staff at her assisted living had taken care of her and called both Joanna and Joe as well as her doctor. After the registered nurse and Joe had pronounced that she did not need to see a doctor I felt that I could go ahead and finish the shows. She was fine tonight, although a little bruised. We joked and I told her please not to dive in the floor while I am in Arizona this week for Anna Garrin's christening. She laughed and told me she would try not to. I am always amazed and touched by her beautiful attitude and hearty spirit. Once again, I thank God that she was not hurt but a little bit with this fall. Please keep her in your prayers this week.

Good news about my diet last week. Lindee Goodall came to be on the show and I was reminded about her doing the low carb diet that she and Bill have lost weight on over the last year. I had already quit sugar on the cruise and I decided to cut back on bread and potatoes. I did drink skim milk so I did not do a "no carb" diet but a "low carb" diet. I lost 3 pounds last week. I will continue on this diet for the Phoenix trip and probably read the Sugar Busters book completely and start on that Wednesday. Sugar Busters allows a little sugar-free bread and a few more carbs than the low carb diet I am doing now. I know without a doubt that I cannot do sugar and caffeine. I simply starve to death when I eat sugar and drink caffeine. Also I get a terrible condition called "more weight" when I eat sugar. Some of you can probably identify with that syndrome.

We leave in the morning for Scottsdale to spend a few days with our family there. The christening is Sunday morning and I'll tell you all about it next week. Anna Garrin's dress is magnificent and the book with the pattern for her dress, slip, and bonnet will be ready for Arlington (I hope). Her dress is a glorious confection of Victorian vines white silk dupioni, laces, and machine embroidery tear drop lace shaping topped off with hand silk ribbon embroidery. Pictures will soon be available on the web site when the book is ready to ship. I can't wait to see Campbell and Marshall (her big brothers) as well as Camp and Charisse.

I have a couple of funny stories to tell you about our week in Tuscaloosa. I was rushing to pack my personal suitcase to leave last Sunday afternoon. I quickly changed from my Sunday clothes to shorts and a tee shirt, socks and athletic shoes. When I arrived in Tuscaloosa I discovered that I had on two different shoes. Both were white Nike's; however, one had blue trim and one had green trim. Not everyone can wear mismatched shows for the whole week and feel comfortable. Since I only wore the Nike's to and from the studio, I figured I could wear those shoes better than I could splurge on another pair of athletic shoes when I had two perfectly good pairs at home.

On the last day of recording, we had "gone over" by several minutes on the sections of the show. I had both a home decorating project and the attic segment still left to record. When the remaining minutes were figured I only had one and one half minutes to do both. That is 45 seconds for each!! I quickly changed the garment in the attic to one which did not need much explaining. I took away the beautiful plaid silk dupioni pillow home decorating project and substituted a "quick" embellished night lite cover. I needed to demonstrate the night lite cover with a hot glue gun. I was so flustered at only having 45 seconds to do the whole segment, when I recorded it for the first time I was holding the hot glue gun upside down! We all laughed for about five minutes before we could get it together to record that speedy 45 second segment again. I actually did the attic in 45 seconds, too.

I will write more next week. We are off to the airport.

May God Bless You and Those You Love,

Martha

ARLINGTON, TEXAS MARTHA'S SEWING MARKET IS NEXT MONTH! - BUY YOUR TICKETS AT THE DOOR - JUNE 21-23, 2001

Arlington is going to be the biggest show we have ever had. Three vendors are coming from Australia and more are coming from all over the United States than we have ever had before. All of the booths are sold unless we have a vacancy that we aren't expecting. We have almost filled my "sit and sew class" the day before the show begins. Send your e-mail to diane@marthapullen.com.

ARLINGTON CLASS SCHEDULE (DAY BY DAY - HOUR BY HOUR) FOR THE FREE CLASSES IS NOW ON THE WEB SITE! GO TO WWW.MARTHAPULLEN.COM TO SEE!

To read about all of the FREE classes (once you pay your low daily admission fee of $15 (less per day if you order now)) go to www.marthapullen.com and click on the "Sewing Markets" bar at the top of the page. Then click on the details of the classes and you will love reading about all of the classes you have to choose from over the three days of the market! They are so exciting. I think you will enjoy reading the classes even if you won't be able to attend this year. It is not too late to get a plane ticket and fly on down to Arlington (Dallas) to come to this market. I think after you read about the classes, you might want to do just that. They really are exciting!

BABY DOLL SURVEY - MARTHA PULLEN'S NEW DOLL MADE BY GOTZ OF GERMANY DOLL COMPANY

Click Doll Poll to participate.

You should have received the baby doll survey via e-mail. If you are interested in possibly purchasing one of our new baby dolls (made by Gotz and available late October) would you please tell us which one or ones you are especially interested in. This if the first time we have had a baby doll in our Gotz line of Martha Pullen dolls. We have chosen a 21-inch doll, very much the size of a real baby and a 16-inch doll, which is a little smaller and easier for a very little child to carry around. Of course, the dolls will be signed and numbered and will come with a "play with" daygown. Included in the price of the doll will be a doll-dressing book with gorgeous baby doll clothes to fit both sized dolls. Since the small doll is "preemie sized" this book will also be a great resource for those of you sewing "preemie" clothing for babies and ministries to hospitals. The larger doll (with the doll dress, the signature, the number and the doll-dressing book) will be $79. The smaller doll (with all of the goodies just mentioned) will be $59. The two large dolls will be different: one has blue eyes and one has brown eyes. The two smaller dolls will have the same thing. They will be named four different names and two of the names can be either a boy or a girl doll. We have named the dolls Dress Me Sarah, Dress me Rebekah, Dress Me Alex and Dress Me Sydney.

We are not ready to take any orders at this time. For those of you who are shop owners, you will be able to order also, so you might want to survey your customers to see just how many you will want to order for your customers. Hopefully, you sewing teachers will have lots of baby doll clothes sewing classes, especially for Christmas surprises of a lifetime for the recipients. Anyway, if you are interested in these dolls, please respond to the survey telling us which dolls you would like to have. I know many of you have all of our dolls and you are interested in getting the lowest possible numbers. I will tell you on this e-mail newsletter FIRST when we are ready to accept doll orders and assign numbers. They are assigned on a minute by minute basis, first come, first served as always. Once again, right now we cannot accept orders. We just need your responses to your interests in the dolls.

We are well into the development of four new books. We are not ready to take orders on any of them at this time! The quilt book is fabulous and has so many heirloom quilt projects: 17 quilts and two pillows to be exact. The Sew Kool 4 Kids book will have easy to make kid's clothing, easy to make doll clothes for 18" dolls, and hand sewing projects for hand embroidery. The "Anna Garrin's Baptismal Gown" book has the most gorgeous christening dress, slip and bonnet you have ever seen with massive amounts of machine embroidery (from any machine) as well as lace shaping and elegance. The Baby Doll Pattern Book will have clothes to fit both the 16" and the 21" baby dolls. Of course these are great for babies too including preemie babies. NEW BABY BONNET KITS

You must go to the web site and see our brand new bonnet kits made from imported handkerchiefs or doilies. We have five and they are super easy to make since all of the embroidery is already done for you. We got the idea for these kits from the schools here in Huntsville. The ladies scrambled to purchase these beautiful handkerchiefs and we showed them how to put them together in a super easy, super beautiful baby bonnet. Joe said to me after the last school, "Please have kits made up for our web site showing people how to make these bonnets." The kits are ready for you to go to the web site to look at and to purchase if you would like (www.marthapullen.com). Everything you need, except white thread, is included in the kit.

ANNA GARRIN'S CHRISTENING DRESS BOOK READY IN ABOUT 8 WEEKS!

We have a new christening dress book just about ready, Anna Garrin's Baptismal Gown. This dress was designed and made for our newest granddaughter, Anna Garrin Crocker. We had originally intended to do a pattern, not a book, with this dress, bonnet and slip; however, I think a booklet is ever so much nicer than a pattern and it will be the same price as a massive pattern envelope would have been - $12 plus $5 shipping. The dress is very elegant and has both hand and machine embroidery featured. A lot of Christian symbolism is built into the dress. The total length of the dress is forty-eight inches. I had always loved the shape of a teardrop in lace. To me, the teardrop symbolizes the blood of Christ, which was shed on the cross for us. This dress has many lace teardrops all around the dress. Each teardrop of white French lace has machine embroidered Christian symbols stitched in. We used Bernina, Pfaff and Viking machine embroidered designs - all from Martha Pullen cards done for those specific companies. The designs range from crosses and flowers to three circles (symbolizing the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit). The fabric for the dress is the gorgeous Victorian vines silk dupioni.

Please don't be disappointed and not get your doll or find that the price has changed! Please go ahead and order your Dress Me Joanna, Martha and Mary dolls at the current price! 800-547-4176 ext. 117 or e-mail toni@marthapullen.com.

SCRIPTURE OF THE WEEK

II Timothy 3:15-17

And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.

I have a grandmother story I want to share. Last week, when I talked with Joanna she told me something Cecil had done while they were riding in the car. Cecil (age 2) said, "Mommy I want the phone." Joanna said, "Cecil, whom do you want to call?" Cecil said, "I want to call Jesus." Joanna replied,"Cecil we talk to Jesus by shutting our eyes and praying like we do every night." Cecil replied, "Mommy give me the phone. See, I have my eyes shut to call Jesus." I love the faith of little children who know that it is easy to ring up Jesus. What a joy to know that going to Jesus in prayer is always available. I rememberd when Joanna was about 8 years old she awoke and told us that she had had the most wonderful dream. She dreamed that Jesus came back. I love knowing that our grandchildren know about Jesus and have faith. I love knowing that our children are teaching their children about Jesus so that their faith as children, I pray, will continue forever. I thank God for parents and grandparents who are teaching their little ones about faith.

RECIPES OF THE WEEK FROM PAT, A NEWLETTER SUBSCRIBER

Thanks, Pat for sending these recipes. I haven't had time to try them yet, but I surely will look forward to doing so in the near future.

Dear Martha,

My husband is diabetic and has always loved his desserts - here are two of his favorites.

Frozen Cherry Cream Pie

4 ounces cream cheese, softened
1 1/2 cups cherry pie filling (Comstock makes a lite and Lucky Leaf makes a SUGAR FREE using Splenda)
2 cups whipped topping (I use fat free)
1 reduced fat graham cracker crust

In a mixing bowl, beat cream cheese until smooth. Fold in the pie filling and whipped topping until blended. Spoon into crust. Cover and freeze for 8 hrs hours or overnight. Remove from the freezer 15 minutes before serving. Yields 8 servings. Each serving is 114 calories, 5 g fat (4 g saturated fat), 8 mg chol, 48 mg sodium, 15 g carbohydrate, trace fiber, 2 g protein. Diabetetic exchange: 1 starch, 1/2 fat.

Pineapple Pretzel Fluff

1 c coarsely crushed pretzels
1/2 c melted margarine (I used benecal - lowers chol.)
1 cup Splenda, divided
1 package (lowfat) cream cheese
1 can (20 oz) very well drained crushed pineapple
1 carton (12 oz) frozen whipped topping, thawed

In a bowl, combine pretzels, butter and 1/2 c sugar. Press into a baking square and bake at 400 degrees for 7 minutes. Cool. Meanwhile, in a mixing bowl, beat cream cheese and remaining sugar until creamy. Fold in pineapple and whipped topping, chill until serving. Recipe then calls to break pretzel mixture into small pieces, and stir into pineapple mixture. But we prefer to put pretzel mixture into container and sprinkle on top since this is dessert for several days, the pretzels taste like nuts. Yields 6 servings.
