EASY CLEAN-UP TIP FROM MARYLOU WAHL
First I want to thank you for a wonderful magazine and I so look forward to both my magazine and the e-newsletter. I'm excitedly awaiting an order for a CD and pattern too. Here is my tip: After watching a bubbly little TV cook who uses a garbage bowl as she cooks -The light bulb went on -gee why can't I do something like that when I sew. I use a small plastic bowl-keep it either by my machine or on my cutting table and use it to put all the snippets of thread, fabric scraps, bent or broken pins and needles and then it is just one trip to the wastebasket to get rid of everything. Saves dragging the wastebasket over by machine or jumping up numerous times to get rid of the trash.Thank you for the wonderful work you do and may God Bless you, MaryLou Wahl
Note from Martha: Those who have had the opportunity to sew with us at The School of Art Fashion and Licensings know how we tape paper bags to the sewing machine tables. Clean-up is easy... just toss the bag full of loose threads and scraps!
BOBBIN TIP FROM CAROL SKILLING OF WILMINGTON, MA
I so enjoy your letters, Martha!! My tip is a bobbin tip. I have blue and green bobbins with my Viking machine, so in order not to mix up embroidery vs regular sewing thread, I put embroidery bobbin thread in blue bobbins and the sewing thread in the green bobbins.
PRESSING TIP FOR WHITE-ON-WHITE EMBROIDERY
I make a number of christening dresses every year - and I always embroider a Bible verse on the slip - along with some personal data. As this embroidery is always white on white, I really need the embroidery to pop out. I do a final pressing on top of a fluffy yard of white fleece. This works so much better than a towel - The embroidery looks perfect and the tiny words in the bible verse are readable.
Dear Sewing Family,
Sewing means so many things to me-to my heart. Several weeks ago on the plane to Oklahoma and back I began smocking a beautiful white Smockables daygown for Joanna and Ron’s little baby due November 14. It is with great joy that I was enjoying putting in the blue stitches since we do not know yet if it is a boy or girl. Week before last in Gulf Shores I had a little time to put in a few more rows of stitches just for fun on this little daygown. This “sewing” was just for fun, fun, fun.

As you will read about in the Scripture for the Week, our grandson Chase had a major medical crisis this week. By God’s mercy we believe he will be alright in about 6 weeks. I got the baggie with the little daygown about 3/4 smocked and put it in my purse. While sitting in the hospital with Chase I smocked for comfort. Smocking and sewing has always been “comfort food” for me. Now of course I like ice cream and other foods for comfort. I surely wish that sewing were my only “comfort” product.
In a particulary rough time in my life-my divorce and knowing that my two tiny little boys would not grow up in the same house as their Daddy-I truly wanted to just curl up and sleep I was so sad. I was at Mama and Daddy’s simply not believing what had happened to me. Mama said, “Martha you are not going to curl up and sleep. You are going to sew.” We went to the Mill Ends Store and purchased a pattern for a green pants suit-you know the green polyester which stood alone which was so popular in the late 60’s. The pantsuit had a Chinese collar and a zipper up the front of the jacket. I’ll never forget it. Mama made me get up in the morning and start on that pantsuit while I took care of my boys during the day. Mama taught school and was gone all day. The pantsuit got finished and I loved it. I wore it forever and it was no-iron - OF COURSE. Sewing was not only comfort but therapy during that time in my life.
I am grateful for the gift of sewing. Earlier in the week when I asked for prayer for Chase from several people one of the fan club members wrote to me saying, “Be sure you sew during this crisis time.” At that point I grabbed the Baggie with the partially smocked daygown and put it in my purse.
With the rise in energy pricing, I know so many people are planning to have more family time and yes, more sewing time. Since 9/11 there has been the largest increase in sewing in many, many years. I think it is for several reasons. Home and traditional arts are more treasured. Family time is more important. Treasuring “leaving a legacy for one’s family” becomes more sharply focused every day of my life. Sewing is also “our time” and what a wonderful legacy to teach our children or grandchildren to sew. What a wonderful time to make a christening dress and layette for a future baby-a REALLY FUTURE baby or babies. I named Grandmother’s Hope Chest for the joy of sewing for babies really in the future. Sewing for a baby-even one who won’t be born for many years is sew much fun. Just tell your husband and friends that you are sewing for baby “fig” who is, at this time, just a figment of your imagination. Please get your patterns, your fabrics and laces and start having the time of your life! Also your “Smockables” if you want to smock and have garments finished very quickly! To see our complete assortment of Smockables click here.
I can think of a lot of reasons to sew more for ourselves in addition to our children and grandchildren and of course don’t let me forget great grandchildren. Sometimes I drive to 4 stores, spend time trying on a few things and absolutely hate everything in the stores and purchase nothing to wear. If you have a good pants pattern and a good skirt pattern you can solve half of your clothing needs in about an hour at home. Shirts are usually easy to find to buy or a jacket to embroider. If you love to wear embroidered purchased jackets as I do, there is a fabulous one piece shift dress in Fabulous Fashions which is lovingly called the “30 minute sewing” dress. You can whip up several of these to match your embroidered jackets and you have an instant wardrobe.
Click here to orderI just had to share some fabulous pictures of our granddaughter Garrin in Arizona. She is already on the competitive team in gymnastics and her coaches simply cannot believe what Garrin, who is only 7 years old, can do. Sophie-Reese, her little 4 year old sister is following in the gymnastics footsteps of her older sister.
You absolutely have to click here to see a preview of our latest issue which is totally dynamite. I might add that I am “totaling” up the actual value if purchased separately the different “patterns, techniques, smocking design plates, embroidery designs, etc. etc.” of a year (6 issues) of SB magazines to just tell you WHAT A VALUE YOU ARE GETTING, VIA THIS NEWSLETTER, FOR ONLY $18. I have not finished 6 magazines yet (a total year) but have totaled three issues from last year and my HONEST APPRAISAL ON THE INDIVIDUAL PURCHASE OF THE ITEMS IN ONLY THREE MAGAZINES IS OVER $250. That’s right, OVER $250 of “stuff” in just 3 magazines.
My guestimate is when I have finished calculating the 6 issues of last year it will be around $500 of value of individual designs, etc. in one year of SB magazine plus the pull out sheets. Some issues have three 16 page pullouts of patterns and instructions. Some magazines have just one 16 page extra value-with lots packed on one to three pages. AND YOU GET THE WHOLE YEAR-THAT’S 6 MAGAZINES-at my value of around $500 if purchased separately for only $18. Can you afford not to subscribe? Please go ahead and subscribe now to see what you are missing. For those of you who “don’t do hand embroidery” you can take the fabulous hand embroidery designs and digitize them! We also have ideas and machine embroidery in every issue in addition to hand embroidery. Click here to subscribe at only $3 per issue! And it comes right to your front door!

I pray for our men and women serving in harm’s way. I pray for their families. I pray, especially this week, for our sewing family. I am aware that some of you have faced tragedy recently. My heart is broken and I am praying OUTLOUD for those of you who need extra special prayers. In the scripture for today I was especially comforted this week during Chase’s “medical emergency” by knowing that “I will go before thee, and make the crooked places straight; I will break in pieces the gates of brass and cut in sunder the bars of iron.” Know that I send my love to each of you this week and my prayers for you and your needs.
May God Bless You,
Martha

Isaiah 45:2-3
I will go before thee, and make the crooked places straight: I will break in pieces the gates of brass, and cut in sunder the bars of iron: And I will give thee the treasures of darkness, and hidden riches of secret places, that thou mayest know that I, the Lord, which call thee by name, am the God of Israel.
John 10: 27-30
My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand. I and my Father are one.
This week Joanna’s 7 year old Chase was rushed to the hospital with a high fever. Several weeks ago he had stepped on a small piece of glass. He was operated on then; no glass could be found; took antibiotics, of course. Then massive pain in his foot. He has a severe infection in his bone. Two surgeries in two days. So many prayed. We had the best specialists and he is going to be alright after 6 weeks of IV antiobiotics (through a “pic or port” which was the second surgery). It has been a long time since I prayed this hard for God’s guidance for the physicians and for God’s healing grace to be showered on Chase. I thanked God OUTLOUD for Huntsville Hospital and all of this fabulous medical care. Chase and I thanked God for two surgeries which will help him to get well. He was not too happy about two surgeries until we talked about children all over the world who had no medical care and no 6 week IV’s to make them well. To God goes the glory for the healing he has provided already and the healing for the next number of weeks. I thank the “God of Israel” for once again providing for my family.
