SEWING TIPS FROM DEBBI HENDRIX, EDUCATION DIRECTOR AT B-SEW INN IN TULSA

1. When cutting a buttonhole put a straight pin over the bar tack and you can 't accidentally cut through the bar tack. 2. When you sew a button on by machine a spot of Fray Block on the threads on the back keeps the buttons from coming off. (Put the Fray Block on after you sew the button on.) 3. To keep your serger from "walking" as you sew fast, set it on a non-slip shelf liner like you put in your kitchen cabinets. You can also use the kind of "no skid" padding you buy to go underneath your throw rugs.

HISTORIC FASHION NEWS (1932, BUTTERICK MAGAZINE) FROM PARIS

"Beige looms important under the sponsorship of Patau...many light reds used by Chanel and Vionnet – Vionnetts soldier blue, a dark grayed blue prominent for daytime – strong, primary colors including the reds, tangerine and yellow – Persian green continues – the silhouette retains its broad shoulder and slim waist and adds uplift lines that define the bust ...skirt lengths remain about the same; 12 inches from the ground for sports; 11 inches for the street; 10-8 inches for afternoon; boot-top to ankle length for end of the day dresses, ankle length to slipper heel length for evening – and extreme evening decolletages using strapped effects – more and more puffed sleeves."

MARTHA PULLEN'S GREAT LAKES SEWING EXTRAVAGANZA BY Chris Keppel, one of our students

Words alone cannot thank you enough for having this event. I wasn't expecting to have such a wonderful time. Not only did I learn a lot, but also the loving, caring atmosphere created by your teachers and staff was heartlifting. Please let them all know what a great influence they are. Thank you.

I was impressed with the ability of ALL the teachers. They were patient, always smiling, and very helpful. It was easy to understand their instructions and no matter how badly a student may have messed up, they were always positive in their responses and ability to fix whatever went wrong. They weren't flustered by anything and appeared calm through everything. What a wonderful staff to have!

If anyone were ever questioning whether he or she should attend your school, whether in Huntsville or on the road, I would tell them not to hesitate. Sign up and be prepared to have a wonderful time. Not only will they learn some wonderful heirloom techniques, but also they will be spending time with wonderful inspiring people who seem to exude a spirit of love and caring I seldom encounter in the outside world. Thank you for coming to Detroit and sharing this experience with me.

Dear Sewing Family,

First, I have great news from Africa! Suzanne has been in Johannesburg this week having the super ultrasound, blood work and other examinations, which are not available in Togo. The baby is perfect and it is a BOY! His name will be Benjamin Paul Crocker. Benjamin is from the Bible (as is Paul) but the Paul is for my daddy, Paul Jones Campbell, whom John admired as much as any man he has ever known.

Daddy died when John was a little boy but he knows of his strength for the Lord and his faithfulness his whole life to our Lord. Daddy is the only person that I have ever known who never said one unkind word about another person. My Daddy always said, "If you can 't say something nice about someone, don 't say it." All of the children are excited about the baby but my grandson, Christopher, especially wanted a boy. John and Suzanne have two gorgeous girls, Rebekah and Sarah Joy, and just one boy, Christopher. Please keep praying for a healthy pregnancy.

The physicians in South Africa said for sure that Suzanne will have to leave West Africa and go to another country (one with excellent medical care) for the delivery. I am grateful that our international mission board of the Southern Baptist Church takes such good care of our missionaries. I 'm still hoping for Huntsville to be their choice, but they will get her to a sophisticated hospital somewhere. For that I am very grateful. God is perfect, he is sovereign and he is in complete control. Suzanne reported that there is superb medical care in Johannesburg and that she was taken care of beautifully.

Many of you know that Suzanne is a registered nurse who goes every Sunday afternoon to the local orphanage (about 40 children) and does their total medical care. They would have absolutely no medical care if Suzanne did not go. John and the children have Sunday school with the children while Suzanne conducts the medical clinic for those children who are sick.

I am writing this letter on Friday because I have two more events this weekend. I am keeping them for a surprise for next week's newsletter since I will be traveling for the rest of the weekend to two more places after Tulsa.

What an incredible four day sewing school we had at B-Sew Inn in Tulsa with Baby Lock! We had the most fabulous group of women. We had three days of sit and sew making gorgeous projects such as an heirloom/circular puffing pincushion and a tea towel (Margaret Tulley, Baby Lock Educator, teacher), a serger baby daygown, slip and bonnet (Kathy McMakin, teacher), a lace shaping class (I taught) and a double Madeira border, heart-shaped, machine embroidered pillowcase (Patti Smith, teacher). The students were so thrilled that nearly everyone finished every project.

We had the thrill of having Steve Jeffery, the president of Baby Lock, attend for two of the four days. What a great honor to have the president of the company to come visit with us. Mary Hess and her incredible staff were beyond fabulous and we loved the classes in her brand new, very high tech store in Tulsa. I just cannot thank everyone enough who attended or who helped to plan this event. We were blessed to spend this time in Tulsa.

Thank you so much for your subscriptions that are flooding into our offices, both new and renewal. I think you are very excited about our brand new Sew Beautiful INTERNET subscribers club, which will start in June of 2003. As you know, every other month you will be able to download a machine embroidery design, a project, a hand embroidery design and some other goodies. You will receive your secret page information via e-mail, and you can go there and download (and print) the items. Please call 800-547-4176, ext. 3 to renew or to get a new subscription. Please don 't miss out on this new INTERNET ONLY subscribers club.

We will have a new catalogue that will be mailed with the newest Sew Beautiful magazine to subscribers. We have a list of people who have requested a catalogue – these will be mailed also. If you do not subscribe to Sew Beautiful and if you have not already requested a catalogue, you can click here and email your request (with your mailing address) to catalog@marthapullen.com

In two weeks, we go to Tuscaloosa to film 13 new TV shows! We are so excited. If you do not have Martha's Sewing Room on your PBS station, click here to go to your local PBS station and send a request. This click will take you to the PBS page where you can type in your zip code and choose your local PBS station. Use the information about your local station to request that Martha 's Sewing Room be aired in your area. Or you can make a phone call, or better yet, write a letter. We thank all of you for watching Martha's Sewing Room, which airs on almost two-thirds of all PBS stations.

Several of the women here in Tulsa this week have attended our Martha 's Machine Embroidery, Quilting and Sewing Market in Arlington. They are coming again this year, and they will find it to be more exciting than ever. We have more high tech classes and machine embroidery teachers than ever before. We also have a lot of quilting classes, including the Friday night special quilting event starring Katie Pasquini Masopust.

We are also looking forward to having many of you in our Wednesday sit and sew class that will feature new projects with lace cathedral windows and French waterfall techniques. The exhibitors' fashion show on Thursday night is always lots of fun. Please call to get your tickets in advance for the market to get discounted rates. 800-547-4176 ext. 109 or 114.

We have had lots of people tell us how much they love our machine embroidery CD's. One woman in Tulsa was wearing the cutest T-shirt embroidered with the little flower cart from our Zundt CD. She said she has embroidered nearly every one of the designs from that card.

My new sewing room is coming along nicely. The walls are painted and the carpet is ordered. My new Horn cabinets are on the way. The week after next we film our new video for Horn Cabinets. I am SO thrilled to be the new national spokesperson for Horn Cabinets. I am BEYOND thrilled about my new sewing room filled with Horn cabinets! Of course you will get to see the sewing room when it is finished!

Many of you have dreams about teaching sewing as your career. That is exactly why we planned our licensed teacher programs. Many of our licensed teachers have built wonderful businesses teaching sewing, and this credential opens doors. We also talk the whole week about business ideas; two of my workshops are specifically geared toward teaching and building your business as well as selling sewing machines inside dealerships. You do not have to be a sewing teacher at this time to come to become a licensed teacher. We teach you effective teaching methods as well as great and effective selling methods. The students in each group range from very experienced sewing teachers to completely new sewing teachers. (You do need to be a good seamstress to come but you do not have to be an expert at heirloom sewing techniques. We teach you those.)

As the years have passed with our Martha Pullen Teacher Licensing groups, we have come to realize that many of our teachers have successfully built custom sewing businesses along with their teaching sewing classes. The two seem to go hand in hand. We have seen many successful businesses built making christening dresses, communion dresses, baby gifts with machine embroidery, wedding gifts with machine embroidery, machine embroidery on purchased items, bridal gowns and veils, portrait clothing for children, flower girl and ring bearer outfits for weddings, and many, many more.

The heirloom skills you will learn while you are here, as well as the business ideas you hear about while you are here, will be invaluable. Some of our licensed teachers have developed projects to market over e-bay and other Internet contacts. Your classmates will share as many great ideas about business development while we are sewing as you could ever get in any college class.

One of the class members will set up an e-mail group (on a service such as Yahoo) available only to the members of your class. The class communicates with each other sharing their business/teaching/pricing/class development. Very close friendships develop during this class which is another added benefit of coming, so we invite you to become a Martha Pullen Licensed Teacher.

I will have some truly exciting news to share next week about an event which I will attend Saturday night in Memphis. As you know, July will be our St. Jude Children's Research Hospital edition of Sew Beautiful magazine. It will also be our "web a thon" fund raising month where I pray that our sewing family will be able to give enough money to run St. Jude for one day. Please try to think about contributing from $10 up to $35 or more (only, of course, if you are able) when we have our fund raising event. We will tell you all of the details later.

Please look at those children and grandchildren that we love more than anybody on earth and try to think about what would happen if we receive the horrid news that he/she has a catastrophic illness. The children and their families at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital have faced that situation. St. Jude researchers are working around the clock for cures for the precious children that are currently patients. They have discovered cures for about 70% of childhood cancers thus far. Let's plan, with small to large donations, to give enough to run the hospital for one day.

I am working with Hancock Fabrics in their effort to raise over one million dollars for St. Jude this year. Hancock raised over $500,000 last year. I 'll tell you how you can help with the Hancock fund raising: we have the cutest clothes featured in the July issue of Sew Beautiful which are made with the St. Jude fabric line. The fabrics will be in Hancock stores by mid-May. Since the fabric is not in yet, I will wait a little longer to tell you more about our helping Hancock meet their goal of one million dollars.

MORE FACTS ABOUT ST. JUDE CHILDREN'S RESEARCH HOSPITAL (PART 3 - CONTINUED FROM THE LAST 2 WEEKS)

– To treat a child with standard-risk ALL requires a 2-1/2 year protocol at a cost of $278,000. – Each St. Jude patient must be referred by a physician, have a disease currently under study at the hospital, be eligible for a current research protocol and, generally, be 18 years old or younger.
– St. Jude researchers and doctors are treating children with genetic immune defects and pediatric AIDS, as well as using new drugs and therapies to fight infections.
– St. Jude is the World Health Organization's Collaborating Center on the Ecology of Influenza Viruses in Animals and Birds.
– The St. Jude faculty includes three National Academy of Sciences members: Peter Doherty, phi, of Immunology; Charles Sherr, MD, Ph.D., of Tumor Cell Biology; and Robert Webster, Ph.D., of Infectious Diseases. Sherr and James Ihle, Ph.D., hold the coveted title of Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigators.
– St. Jude is in the midst of a five-year expansion that will bolster the hospital's research efforts and more than double the size of the St. Jude campus. The $1 billion expansion includes establishment of the Children's Infection Defense Center and expansion of the hospital's International Outreach Program.

I will close for now since I need to go back to class to sign books and lace shaping boards. I do my business seminar tonight sharing ways to earn money with your sewing machine. There has never been a better time to begin a home-based sewing business. I will also do this lecture in Arlington and at the Quilt Academy in Huntsville next September. We have several new events coming up and great excitement that I will be sharing each week.

Thank you so much for getting this newsletter. I am always thinking about my sewing family no matter where I travel. You are my special, special extended family. I continue to pray for our men and women serving overseas and praise the Lord for the return of our POW 's. I pray for those families who have lost loved ones. I pray for the safe return of those missing in action and for our president and world leaders who are working on so many important decisions. I have to say I am thankful for the joy of sewing, which is such a stress reliever and creativity outlet for all of us. So many women here have told me of how much they turn to their sewing machines instead of a therapist. I thank God for the joy of sewing. I thank God for you.

May God Bless You,
Martha

SCRIPTURES FOR THE WEEK

Psalm 51: 10 — Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.

1 John 1:9 — If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

I think it is so thrilling that God will forgive my sins. It is almost like writing on this computer, making a mistake and just "blacking" it out and I have a new computer page on which to write. This computer page, if I black it out, has nothing on it at all and I am free to create again. God allowed his son to die on the cross so my sins could be forgiven. I believe when I accepted the Lord as my savior, I got the right to be forgiven of my sins, so I confess them and ask forgiveness.

I think it is so exciting that God has given me a new piece of paper on which to write. I pray that my confession of my sins also is a commitment not to commit those sins again. I pray for strength in overcoming temptation from so many things of this world. God has indeed given me a new start in life and I know that he is "faithful and just to forgive me my sins and to purify me." Thank you, God.

LOW CALORIE RECIPE FOR THE WEEK By Martha Pullen

1 small bag of frozen sugar free fruit (peaches, honeydew, cantaloupe, and grapes)
1-1/2 cups orange juice
sweetener to taste (optional)

Pour frozen fruit into a bowl. Cover with orange juice (mixed with several packs of sweetener if desired) and leave in the bowl until the orange juice becomes slushy. Joe thinks this is one of his favorite deserts, and so do I.
