BRAND NEW QUILT BOOK AND HEART CD!

Sometimes there are quilts which just “tickle your heart and make it happy.” Our new book, “From My Heart To Yours” is such a book. The white and ecru quilt was designed and made by Sue Stewart and was shown and taught on Martha’s Sewing Room for PBS series 2100. The center lace diamond star is framed by Celtic lace ovals filled with embroidered insertion. The fancy band outer frame has more trims and machine embroidered hearts and laces. Corded pintuck blocks line both sides of each fancy band and tied lace bows trim the corners of this heirloom treasure. A stippled background provides the perfect canvas for this masterpiece quilt which will truly be treasured in the hearts of those who behold it. Hand embroidery instructions for the two embroidered hearts are given in the book. This full color 36 page book with the complete quilt pattern plus a hand stitch guide is only $7.95! Click here to order the book.

We have a gorgeous new machine embroidery CD called Sweet Hearts. It has the two hearts digitized to be used with the quilt for those who love machine embroidery plus other exquisite hearts for those of us who just love hearts. Click here to see all the designs. You will love our newest CD and find many places to put hearts in addition to this beautiful quilt. The cost of the CD is only $40 and if you belong to the IEC your cost is $30. Click here to order.

This is a combination-the book and the CD-that you can’t afford to miss. I truly believe this heirloom quilt, as well as many heirloom quilts, is a museum piece. However, I truly hope that your quilt never leaves your family to enter a museum. This quilt is the ULTIMATE NEW BABY GIFT which would be treasured for a lifetime.

LETTER OF THANKS FROM FLORENCE MUGISHA, THE DIRECTOR OF THE SEWING PROGRAM OF AFRICA NEW LIFE MISSION IN RWANDA TO THE BABY LOCK TEACHER LICENSING GROUP

Dear Martha and the ladies in your group,
I am so thrilled by the news I read this morning. I strongly believe that God is at work of blessing OUR WOMEN'S program and is using you all to bless this program. I really appreciate you all for our generous financial gift. I truly believe your ladies are a blessing/ an answer to prayers.

In Rwanda we are in the days of mourning (remembering our people who died during the 1994 genocide). It is really a hard time for Rwandan people, and because of that all the schools have closed. Our women in the program should be all back by Wednesday this week. And I shall send you pictures and thank you note from them as soon as possible.

Again send my thanks to the ladies in your group for all their bigheartedness. I have not enough words to express my appreciation to you all but just know we are so thankful to you.

In His Love
Florence Mugisha

Martha - Here are pictures of the nursery songs quilt I made for a darling little girl in Missouri. I used bright colors & prints instead of the pastels suggested. Your embroidery discs sew out so beautifully. Thank you for such quality and wonderful projects. Sew Beautiful magazine is an inspiration along with all your products. Thanks for all you do for the sewing community. Keep up the great work.

Sewing Tips

PLEASE SEND SEWING TIPS AND PROJECTS WITH PICTURES, ESPECIALLY PICTURES WHICH INCLUDE MARTHA PULLEN CD’S, IEC DESIGNS, GIFT OF THE MONTH DESIGNS, PATTERNS, PATTERNS FROM SEW BEAUTIFUL - OUR READERS LOVE TO SEE HOW YOU HAVE USED OUR PRODUCTS!! AND SO DO WE!! PLEASE SEND TO martha.pullen@yahoo.com.

SEWING TIP FROM ANNETTE FROM RINGGOLD, GA
Recently, I ironed the pellon interfacing to the wrong side of the collar of my new suit. Usually that doesn’t matter, but with this particular collar it did! I found that Carbona Stain Devils for Chewing Gum and Glue took the glue off the collar with no ill effects.

SEWING TIP FROM SANDRA, PENNSYLVANIA
I have begun cutting my threads at the end of each thread change instead of pulling the thread back through the thread disks which can cause maintenance problems. I now keep a box of these cut threads to use for future projects such as a scarf or making my own fabric with lots of different textures and colors of thread.

SEWING TIP FROM BETTY CONLEY, CA
I’ve been reading the suggestions concerning sewing machines and sergers using surge protectors. I live out in the country and our power fluctuates so to prevent any mishaps with my computerized machines (sewing/serger) I purchased a battery back up with surge protector all in one. I purchased it several years ago at Costco or Sam’s Club for about $50. It is a blessing especially if I’m working on a design on the computer or machine and the power goes out, you have approx 10 min to close out and save. If I’m on my machine stitching a design, I write down where I am stitch number and color so I can pick up where I left off. I’m not sure if anyone has suggested this but if not it’s for your newsletter.

SEWING TIP FROM DR. SUSAN SLESINGER, CA
If you use a computerized embroidery machine plug it into a UPS (uninterruptable power supply). These devices are designed to power computers for a period of time so that they can be shut down safely in case of a power surge or outage. In the embroidery world, they provide enough power to finish your color, or even your whole design depending on how much back up power it provides. (They are rated according to the number of minutes of backup provided.) When using one only for an embroidery machine you do not need to install the enclosed shut-down software. If your embroidery machine and computer are sharing the UPS then you should install the software on the computer so that you can shut it down safely. UPS devices are available at office supply stores, computer stores and “big box” stores.

Martha's Letter

Dear Sewing Family,

First, I would like to share how much I have loved listening to some of Pope Benedict’s sermons which he has shared with such love in the United States this week. It was truly thrilling to me to hear how much he loves us and to see coverage of this precious man of God on television. He asked several times for us to pray for him and I for one will certainly do that. His messages reminded me that we need to pray more for all of our pastors.

As you can see our “sewing sisters in Africa” are thrilled and grateful to God for the latest contribution to their ministry from the Baby Lock Licensed Teachers. When John was there last September he had his heart practically torn out over the street children who come several times a week to the Africa New Life Mission for food. I had asked Florence to send a picture of their “kitchen” which as you can see is a large pot where they fix something for the street children to eat. She sent me this picture and I would ask that you pray for these children and for the ANLM that they will continue to have funds not only for sewing but for feeding the 800 children who are served by the orphanage as well as the street children. As you feed your little children tonight please thank God that they do not have to practically stand in line to fight for a cup of food. Also thank God for this mission where they do cook a pot of food to give to the children.

Sometimes an embroidery design CD is simply breathtaking. I thank Martha Demere, designer extraordinare, for sharing her gorgeous creation which was stitched by hand for her daughter’s high school graduation dress. Martha is certificated by the Royal School of Needlework in England and is one of the most talented needle artists in the world. She allowed us to re-create her gorgeous designs in machine embroidery for you. As you can see there are two different versions for a skirt; the more narrow version and the wider version. Both are exquisite.

Kathy Barnard, our Sew Beautiful editor/designer extraordinare, created a dress and pattern using Martha’s graduation masterpiece so that you can have something which resembles Martha Demere’s dress-all done by machine. This pattern is very versatile and can be used many ways. I think the machine embroidery design would make the most beautiful skirt for a christening dress IN THE WORLD! This pattern is the perfect dress for evening wear, wedding wear, special occasion wear-any where. I thank Kathy Barnard and Martha Demere for making this combination “happen.” The cost of the CD is $75; however, if you belong to the IEC your cost is $45.

Scripture for the week

SCRIPTURE FOR THE WEEK

Romans 8:37-39 (New International Version)
37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.
38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers,
39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Earlier this week I had the privilege of speaking to a group of missionary parents at our church, Whitesburg Baptist. I was to address what it was like from a parental point of view when our children thought they might be murdered in the uprising in Abijan, Ivory Coast. Many of you prayed that night, several years ago, after I sent out an emergency e-mail from my hotel room in California to our sewing family. I wanted to share my closing remarks to this group.

“God’s promise of victory is specific to the role he has given to you and me and to our missionary children. When faced with the Abijan situation (or emergencies with your missionary children) our intelligence, our talents, our businesses, our perserverance, our work ethics, our speaking and book writing experiences, nor our checkbooks could fix this situation or any situation like this. It was God’s love which saved our children and grandchildren and the other precious Baptist missionaries from being murdered. It was God’s love which kept me closer to his flame than probably I had ever been before since nothing Mama could do would help-except pray. It was also knowing that in the event that they were going to die that He would take them instantly to heaven and their lives would be perfect after that.”

John 14:27
Jesus said, “I leave you peace; my peace I give you. I do not give it to you as the world does. So don’t let your hearts be troubled or afraid.

April is the perfect month for serving steamed asparagus with Quick-and-Easy Hollandaise Sauce. For more recipes like these, see the April/May 2008 issue of Taste of the South magazine.

Quick-and-Easy Hollandaise Sauce
Yield: 1 cup
Preparation: 5 minutes
Cook: 5 to 7 minutes
  • 1 cup butter
  • 4 large egg yolks, lightly beaten
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon hot pepper sauce
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground red pepper

In a medium, heavy saucepan, melt butter over very low heat. Add egg yolks and lemon juice, whisking to combine. Whisking constantly, cook for 5 minutes, or until slightly thickened. Add hot pepper sauce and red pepper, whisking well. Serve immediately over your favorite vegetable.

Note: We recommend using an electric stovetop with coil burners or a gas stovetop when making this sauce. Make sure to cook it over the lowest heat possible. Otherwise, it will curdle every time.
