HISTORIC HAND EMBROIDERY TIP — Needlecraft Magazine, June 1925

Here is my way of making French knots: Instead of winding the thread around the needle as is usual, bring the needle up through the cloth where the knot is to be, take a tiny stitch in the cloth, throw the thread over as if to form a buttonhole, draw up, and repeat; usually two stitches are enough. These knots keep in place and are very quickly and easily made.

SEWING/MACHINE EMBRODIERY TIP FROM Michelle Rietz, a Martha Pullen Husqvarna/Viking Licensed Teacher

In an attempt to organize my machine embroidery collection, I have found the following useful: I purchase the clear plastic sleeves/pockets, 8 1/2 x 11 (lettter size) that are pre-punched for a three ring binder. After downloading the CD/disk from the original producer, I insert the original CD/disk into the pocket in its original smaller plastic bag. I also then insert my own disk, in MY machine format into the sleeve. Most CD's/ disks. fit their stitch order, thread #s etc. into a sheet that is an 8 1/2 x 11 sheet when it is unfolded. If it is, I insert the sheet, with the thread info UP in the "Top layer" of my pocket. If it is not on one 8 1/2 x 11, I copy as needed. I then put the pockets in a three ring binder behind divider tabs that make sense to me. To be honest, I have only have 5 tabs: MP (Martha Pullen), kids, florals, animals and borders. If I have downloaded an internet design, I usually don't have a CD/disk from the original producer, so I just skip that step.

I keep this notebook (3 ring binder) near my sewing machine & if I need a design, I can usually find it quickly. I then open the three ring binder to the appropriate pocket. The needed stitch information is then before me as I stitch. I usually mark the specific design, on the plastic front of the sleeve with a "Post It TM"as I sew so my eye is drawn to it as I sew it out. If you subsequently "lose" a design, due to computer problems, you then can easily find both the original CD/disk and your own format disk to reconstruct both.

SWEET LETTER ABOUT OUR GREAT LAKES SEWING EXTRAVANGANZA IN DETROIT LAST WEEK FROM June Gould Chelmsford, MA

What an outstanding experience at the Great Lakes Extravaganza in Detroit! As a former educator, I have attended hundreds of workshops, conferences, etc. and yours was the very best that I ever attended. The quality of instruction and the enthusiasm and helpfulness of the instructors was excellent. I was especially pleased with wide variety of skills that were taught. The kits were generously supplied with high quality materials which resulted in very nice projects.

Added to the instructional piece, the friendliness of the entire group from you, Martha, to each participant made for a wonderful environment. You made it so special with your great presentations and your spiritual leadership. Thank you! Thank you!

PERSONAL LETTER FROM MARTHA

Dear Sewing Family,

Have you ever stopped to think about the absolute best 12-15 days in your life? I have done this recently and I would like to share some of mine with you. I had one of those top days in my life last Monday when we did a photo shoot at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis. Another top day in my life was a few weeks before when I visited St. Jude Children's Research Hospital for the first time. I became totally committed to praying for the patients, their familes and the staff at this unbelievable hospital which treats catastrophic illness in children and I prayed all the way home to let God use me and Martha Pullen company somehow to help raise money to keep the work going there. Both times I have been at this hospital I have thanked God that none of my grandchildren has needed this facility.

I have also thanked God that St. Jude Children's Reasearch Hospital is there if any of my grandchildren ever are faced with a catastrophic illness which cannot be treated with local facilities. I have thanked God for the research which is going on for children all over the world that they may live. Danny Thomas, the founder, said, "No child should die in the dawn of life." I believe everyone reading this newsletter totally agrees with that statement and I am thankful for the life commitment of Danny Thomas and his wife and their family in their role at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

The best day of my life was in 1983 the day I received the Lord into my life, totally, as Lord and Master of my life. I had known him intellectually and loved Him but I had never really asked forgiveness of my sins and asked Him to come into my heart as the complete Lord of my life. The second best day of my life was the day I married Joe, my husband and partner. The next three days came with the birth of my birth children, Camp, John and Joanna. The next two days came with my marriage to Joe and getting two more wonderful sons, Mark and Jeff. The next best days of my life came with the birth of each of our 12 grandchildren (12 so far, I might add). I would have to add that another top day in my life (although I don't remember that exact day too well) was the day I was born to my parents who were the world's greatest parents, Anna Ruth and Paul Campbell. God gave me such a blessing choosing my whole family for me.

We had the joy of doing a photo shoot at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital last Monday. Our July issue of Sew Beautiful magazine will feature these adorable children in these fabulous St. Jude Design fabrics with some of the world's cutest smocking design plates, rick rack embellishments, machine embroidery and other things too numerous to mention right now. I flew to Memphis from the wonderful Detroit Sewing Extravanganza Sunday night and met the Sew Beautiful staff and Joe. You simply won't believe the adorable clothing that our designers had made - very very quickly - with the brand new St. Jude Children's Research Hospital line of fabrics which will be available at Hancock Fabrics in May. Our top designers stopped everything they were doing to sew and smock the cutest casual clothing you have ever seen. When the clothing came in, we found that NOT ONE OF THEM HAD CHARGED US ONE PENNY FOR THEIR LABOR! Each one wanted to have a part in our fund raising effort for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

We are working with Hancock Fabrics' brand new St. Jude fabric line which will be available in their stores May 15, in an effort to help Hancock toward their goal of raising one million dollars for St. Jude this year. They raised over $500,000 last year. We are beyond excited about the clothing made in record time by our fabulous designers, and about the St. Jude children who modeled for our July issue of Sew Beautiful. I'll tell you all the plans and how we need you to help in the upcoming months.

Actually I'll tell you another secret. We are helping Hancock with their $1,000,000 goal in several ways; however, I have an additional dream: that the Martha Pullen sewing family will be able to donate $834,100 in addition to Hancock's $1,000,000, so that we can say that our sewing family has donated enough money to run St. Jude Children's Research Hospital for one day. We are developing a St. Jude machine embroidery CD, which matches the fabrics soon to be available at Hancock Fabrics, which will be part of that fund raising opportunity. Cactus Punch is playing a major role in that particular contribution.

July will be Martha Pullen/St. Jude/Sew Beautiful month (at Martha Pullen Company) and we will have a "web a thon" that I will let you know about later. Hopefully, each of us will be able to contribute something from $10 on up. With as many thousands of people who receive this newsletter, I believe we can make our goal of $834,100. I will need each of you to help with this July fund raiser. St. Jude will set up our branch of their web site and I'll let you know all of the details later.

QUICK FACTS ABOUT ST. JUDE CHILDREN'S RESEARCH HOSPITAL (PART I)

– St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, founded by the late entertainer Danny Thomas, treats about 160 patients every day on an outpatient basis and maintains 56 inpatient beds.

– It is the first institution established for the sole purpose of conducting basic and clinical research into catastrophic childhood diseases, mainly cancer. St. Jude is the largest childhood cancer research center in the world in terms of the number of patients enrolled on research protocols and successfully treated.

– Since St. Jude opened in 1962, it has treated about 19,000 children from all 50 states and 60 foreign countries.

– Research findings at St. Jude are shared with doctors and scientists all over the world. St. Jude also enjoys a worldwide reputation as a teaching facility. The medical and scientific staff published about 400 articles in academic journals in 2002.

– St. Jude, which is non-sectarian, has approximately 4,300 patients in active status. It treats children without regard to race, religion, creed or ability to pay. ALSAC/St. Jude, the fund-raising arm, covers all costs not covered by insurance for medical treatment rendered at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Families without insurance are never asked to pay.

– The hospital's daily operating costs are approximately $834,100, which are primarily covered by public contributions.

– During the past five years, 86.7 percent of every dollar received by ALSAC/St. Jude has gone to the current or future needs of St. Jude.

We are so excited about the upcoming wedding (May 10) of my niece, Anna Jackson to Travis Holly. Anna and my sister, Mary, have just about everything ready. Anna's dress is white with beautiful crystal beads on the bodice. She looks like a princess. As a matter of fact, Mary, her friend Leslie, and I all cried when we saw it on Anna at the bridal shop. It was definitely the one!

Anna had asked Cecil, Joanna's little 4-year-old daughter, to be the flower girl. What would be the prettiest dress to go with this gorgoue white satin dress? We decided that a white silk dupioni high yoke dressed smocked in white with crystal beads would be perfect. Of course, we had to add some white on white embroidery, feather stitching, etc. to make the dress complete. Cheryl Davidson designed and made the flower girl dress and I almost cried with joy when it arrived at our shop. Cheryl had even put little scallops gathered on the bottom of the skirt with ribbons and little crystal bead in the center of each ribbon. The lace trimmed slip peeks out of the bottom of each scallop.

Cheryl used the smocked dress pattern from our Silk Ribbon Treasures book. I think this is the best smocked dress pattern which has ever been put into any book in the smocking industry. By the way, the back is "to the waist" and has buttons and buttonholes. A very special sash completes the dress. You will get the smocking plate and the embroidery designs in a future issue of Sew Beautiful; however, I just could not help but tell you about our excitement about Cecil's flower girl dress.

Although Chase is not in the wedding, he will attend. His suit is the fabulous sailor suit which buttons up the front from Heirloom Sewing for Jack and Jill. His suit is made of white linen blend, a great fabric for boy's clothes because you cannot see through it. This one piece, turn-of-the-last-century reproduction suit is not lined. I might just mention here that this book has at least $400-$500 of patterns included with the book, if you purchased them separately. It also has 4 quilt patterns in the book, has 416 pages with 48 color pages and over 2,000 illustrations for how-to instructions. It is considered the "encyclopaedia" of heirloom sewing and has almost every technique including many techniques for the wash away basting thread Madeira appliqué techniques. If you love Madeira appliqué (the easy way) there are many easy methods in this book.

We are busily working on my brand new sewing room which will feature furniture by Horn Cabinets. I think I told you that I have had the honor of being chosen the international spokesperson for Horn Cabinets. We will tape a video in May which will be available from Horn, and I will certainly be sharing my new sewing room with you. I am thrilled about having a newly designed sewing room. By the way, I am converting one of my bedrooms into my sewing room. I love Horn cabinets which are the most wonderfully designed and constructed cabinets in the world. I can't wait for my new sewing room to be finished and for you to see it.

Charlotte Gallaher loves the new Zundt machine embroidery design exclusively for Martha Pullen. This week she brought in a little pillowcase that she had embroidered by placing two corner flower designs from our Zundt Designs Volume 1 CD to create a beautiful embroidered frame for a monogrammed initial. This would make a beautiful gift for a special person. I loved it so much I thought I would share it with you in this newsletter.

By the way, the imported baby pillowcase is available from us for $6. The Zundt machine embroidery CD is available for $54 plus shipping if you are a member of the IEC and for $90 if you are not a member. Now is the time to join the IEC if you aren't already a member!! Such a value for $59 per year!

Last Friday, we had a small reunion of some of the people who went to London with us in December. Nancy had flown in from Denver to spend some time with Diane and the Huntsville crowd got together with them for lunch Friday at our business. Diane told us how much she adores the new Zundt CD for Martha Pullen. She has a friend who belongs to the red hat (purple dress) club and she used the hat design from the Zundt CD and embroidered the hat in red for her friend. Isn't this a cute idea? I'm sure that I want to join the red hat club so I might just embroider myself that cute Zundt hat in red on some guest towels for my bathroom. Or I might embroider a whole denim shirt with those red had ladies!

To see other Zundt designs other than our CD please click here. Zundt has an incredible web site with downloadable designs. Just wait until you see his corner pieces which can be embroidered to make beautiful tablecloths. Just wait until you see his whole web site. If you are coming to Arlington, you will meet Urban Zundt in person and see his gorgeous samples in person.

By the way, in the future we do have a trip planned to Italy and another sewing cruise to a wonderful destination. I'm not sure about the travel times but we are certainly planning more group vacations. We have had such fun on our two trips to London and to the Caribbean.

It is time to register for the Summer Martha Pullen School of Art Fashion. It is going to be the best ever and we have a star studded line up with teachers from two continents. The schools offered this July are Beginning School, Beverley Sheldrick School (New Zealand), Fine Embroidery for Little Ones, For Women Only, Joanna's Sew Kool 4 Kid's School, Lynne Holyoake School (Australia) , Mirella Arroyo School (Puerto Rico), Wendy Schoen Baby School, Bernina School, Husqvarna Viking School and Pfaff School. Remember that Beverley and Lynne only teach at our summer school so you need to head on toward Alabama this summer to be in one of their classes.

Last week at Weight Watchers I lost 4 pounds (for two weeks). I think I have maintained this week and I won't be in Huntsville to weigh in. I have found that writing down everything I eat really helps. Actually my goal is to average about one half pound a week over the next year. Our Weight Watchers leader for last week has lost 50 pounds and it took her two years to do it. That is very realistic for me.

As Easter approaches, I am greateful for the Son of God who died on the cross for the sins I commit today. I am grateful that he said, "cast your cares on me." I am very thankful for each of you, my sewing family, who allows me to write to you each week and share what is on my heart and what is happening at Martha Pullen Company. Don't forget that you are the heartbeat of Martha Pullen Company and without you it simply would not exist. Thank you.

May God Bless You and Those You Love,
Martha

SWEET LETTER FROM ADRIENNE MASSEL

Thank you for your newsletter which inspires readers artistically and spiritually. I'm happy you pray for families who have lost loved ones, and I believe, though you haven't said so, you also pray for the great number of families in Iraq who have also lost loved ones. We must remember we are a world community.

(Note from Martha: Thank you, Adrienne, for reminding me to pray for the Iraqi families also. I have been praying for them, but I have not mentioned it on this newsletter. I have been praying also for the people and children of Iraq for the difficult experience they have been through. I am remembering everyone in my prayers and I believe I must pray even harder for peace to be established in Iraq and for terrorism to be abolished the world over. I still pray for the familes of the ones lost in the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and in Pennsylvania. I am reading Lisa Beamer's book "Let's Roll" and I highly recommend it. She is the widow of Todd Beamer (one of the heroes of the flight which crashed in Pennsylvania). I pray so hard for our world to overcome terrorism so that events like this will not happen again. I remind myself that God is sovereign, God is perfect and God is in complete control of the world.

SCRIPTURES FOR THE WEEK – Romans 11: 34-36

"Who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been his counselor?
"Who has ever given to God, that God should repay him?
"For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be the glory forever! Amen."

The scripture says that no one has ever been God's counselor. I am fully aware that God does not need my advice and that I am not worthy of even thinking about giving him advice. I am dependent on God for everything and I know he is sovereign. God is all powerful. My new year's resolution for this year is "God." I'm not quite sure what that means from day to day but I know that it means I am to praise him, worship him, and trust him for all things. I know that it means giving him credit for everything in my life. I know he is merciful and I know without a doubt that I am his child and that he cares for me.

I know about true joy which comes only from knowing the Lord as master of my life. I know that God has taken care of me in the good days of my life and in the one tragedy of my life, when my little nephew, Al Jackson, was murdered by a drunk driver. I know that I do not pray enough. I know that I cannot completely comprehend an infinite God with my finite mind. I also know that I can know him better by reading his word more and by praying. I am sure I am not spending enough time with the Lord. In closing I would quote 1 Corinthians 2:16 - "For who has known the mind of the Lord that he may instruct him?" I would pray that I will seek to know his mind more every day so that I may be instructed more by the Lord and have my own mind renewed and transformed through his power.
