SEW BEAUTIFUL DESIGN CHALLENGE-FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME EVER - A TOTALLY NEW CONCEPT!! WE WANT YOU TO BE INVOLVED
A beautiful antique child's dress (sizes 6 - 14) will be the featured free pattern for Sew Beautiful in November, 2003. In the past, we have printed the pattern and instructions, and in a few cases, printed some versions of the same pattern in later issues with adaptations made by readers. This time, we have decided to try something new. We are making the November 2003 pattern (with basic instructions) available now; you can order the pattern for a minimal charge to cover printing, shipping, and handling.
Use the pattern pieces provided to make your version of the dress (without seeing the original garment) and we will select a few to print with the November article. The pattern and full instructions will be printed in the November 2003 issue as usual, along with photos of the original antique, our reproduction version, and a few of your versions. Please go to sewbeautifulmag.com to read the total instructions and to order your pieces so you can participate in the VERY FIRST SEW BEAUTIFUL DESIGN CHALLENGE.
This is not a contest and there will be no winners. We just want to see what you will do with just pattern pieces and your own creativity. This should be lots of fun and I thank our Sew Beautiful editors for dreaming up this creative addition to the November 2003 Sew Beautiful magazine. Maybe your dress will be included. Please have some fun and enter.
PLEASE SUBSCRIBE TO SEW BEAUTIFUL IF YOU DON'T ALREADY!

HISTORIC SNIPPET WITH COMMENTS FROM MARTHA
(Note from Martha: Many times we call antique white baby dresses "christening dresses" when they in actuality are just baby dresses. Of course we can use these beautiful dresses for christening dresses, even the simplest antique long white dress is beautiful for today's special occasion. Babies wore long white dresses every day, many times until long after they were beginning to walk.
Sometimes these dresses served as safety devices. Food was cooked over a large open fireplace which went to the floor. Can you imagine the danger of a crawling or toddling baby near one of these fireplaces as the mother cooked three meals a day in these fireplaces? Many times the mother would lift the leg of the dining table, slip a corner of this long dress underneath the dining table and that would serve as a "baby sitter" to keep the baby from crawling into the fire while she cooked.)From Woman's World - circa 1920
"Elaborate dresses are not in good taste for everyday wear, but, of course, the baby must have a few best dresses. These can be made attractive and dainty without spending much money on materials, depending on the handwork for the beauty of the dress. Round yoke dresses are always pretty.
For square yoke dresses embroider the yoke and join it to the dress with seam binding or sew together with a fell seam. Part of the fullness of the dress is put into an inverted under the arm plait, which keeps the gathers from being bunchy at the front.
Embroidered lawn beadings that have spaces to run ribbon through can be used at the neck and sleeves of the best dresses and sometimes the armholes are put in this way, with ribbon run through the beading and tied on each shoulder. The beading should be narrow - between one-fourth and three-eighths inch wide. Materials for baby dresses are: batiste, lawn and dimity or a very fine quality of nainsook."
SEWING TIP FROM A FRIEND AT THE ORLANDO MARKET
I simply cannot remember my friend's name who told me about this little sewing project at lunchtime during the sit and sew in Orlando. She told me she makes bags with machine embroidered crosses or other religious things on the front and gives them to friends for their prayer bags. She gives the instructions to drop all of your cares and worries in this bag and give them to God. What a great way to use your machine embroideries which have religious themes! She and her mother had come to the market together.
LITTLE QUOTE FOR TODAY REMEMBER: "Stressed" spelled backward is "desserts." (Just for fun!)
TEACHING KID'S SEWING LESSONS - DONNA THOMPSON - A MARTHA PULLEN VIKING/HUSQVARNA LICENSED TEACHER
I have been teaching some kid's classes - ages 8 - 13. They are really a lot of fun. What's really funny with these kids is a lot of them who attend are learning on their own -- their mom's cannot sew a stitch. I'm not sure how I got into working with children, it's one of those things that just happened.
(Note from Martha: Teaching kid's sewing is one of the most exciting ventures into having your own sewing business. We have a great book, written by my daughter Joanna and me, called Sew Kool 4 Kids and the projects are ones that kids can really sew. Not only are there garments for kids to sew there are also many dresses for the 18" doll that kids can really sew. All the patterns are very very very simple.)
REPORTS OF HEIRLOOM SEWING CLASSES IN WISCONSIN FROM Dennis - A MARTHA PULLEN HUSQVARNA/VIKING LICENSED TEACHER
Heirloom classes are doing well. They really seem to have a lot of interest. We did the Shark Teeth quilt block on Tuesday, let me tell you, it was a HUGE success. Experienced Quilters were shocked to see how easy it was to do.
GIFT OF THE MONTH EYEGLASS CASE COMMENTS FROM OUR VIKING/HUSQVARNA LICENSED TEACHER, Dianne Steinbach
Just completed the Jan. Gift of the Month project, "Twisted Rickrack Eyeglass Case." It's just beautiful! I intend to promote it as a cell phone holder also. It's the perfect size and would be very useful in this cell phone era. Also, I want to let you know how successful my classes have been with "Gift of the Month." Thank you so much for all you have done to encourage and help me in my business.
PERSONAL LETTER FROM MARTHA
Dear Friends,
On this day we celebrate the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. I have written my tribute to this incredible man at the end of this newsletter.
It is time to sign up for two events!! If you want to come to the February School of Art Fashion there are a few places in a few classes. There is still time to come for the Huntsville vacation of a lifetime. It is also time to sign up for our fabulous Great Lakes Sewing Extravaganza in Detroit, Michigan. We are so excited about bringing our big "four-day sit and sew" school to the great northern part of the country. This is a first for us so please sign up in a hurry since the registration is limited. We can't wait to have you come to either school or both, for that matter!
We have a big "Praise the Lord" in our family. Joe had a complete knee replacement on Thursday morning and he was home walking, pain free, by Sunday at noon. His knee has hurt for nearly 7 years and he finally decided last October to have it done after we got home from Orlando. He was so glad to get home and is now anxious to get back to full speed.
I have some very, very exciting family news. I know many of you love to hear news from our missionary family in Africa, John and Suzanne and the three children. We have the biggest news ever this week. Suzanne, a registered nurse, had been terribly ill and could not keep anything down for over a week. Finally, John told her there was nothing to do but to drive the seven hours to the Baptist hospital in Southern Togo to see a missionary doctor from Michigan.
Suzanne had decided that she had amoebas, food poisoning, or hepatitis or something else even worse. All five of them loaded up and took the 7 hour bumpy drive to the hospital where she was admitted. The American missionary doctor asked many questions, including pregnancy as a possibility. Suzanne replied, "We were told many years ago that I could not get pregnant and we have been married 14 years, so I don't think that is a possibility. Years ago we went through infertility treatments which did not work." He proceeded to begin testing for everything else under the sun.
The second day, when all of the tests were negative, he said, "Suzanne, I think we will do a pregnancy test just to rule that out." The test is positive!! He came into the room and said to Suzanne, "I just have one question. What are you going to name the baby?" Suzanne was so elated and the doctor said, "I'll send John in for you to tell him." The doctor told John, "I think you had better go to your wife's room. I am going to let her tell you the diagnosis." Of course John did not know what to expect and rushed to her room. When Suzanne told him he could not believe it.
We don't know who is the most excited - John and Suzanne or Sarah Joy, Rebekah or Christopher, their three gorgeous adopted children. All of the children want the new baby to sleep in their room. John and Suzanne had prayed so hard for a child and God sent them three children through adoption. Since God answered their prayer three times, they thought their family was complete. Now God has answered again.
Truly they need your prayers for a safe pregnancy and delivery. If everything goes as prayed for, they will go to the Baptist hospital guest house about a month before the delivery so the American doctor will deliver the baby. If any problems occur, Suzanne and the children and LaVerne their teacher will move to the guest house and John will commute on the weekends. Of course, if any other medical treatment is needed the International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Church will transport her whereever is necessary.
I asked Suzanne if there were an ICU unit available in this hospital and she told me that there wasn't but that if an emergency were to occur, a med flight plane with an infant ICU on board, a doctor and a nurse from France would be sent as soon as possible to bring equipment and fly her and the baby back to France. It would be about 7 hours before help could arrive. (I hope I got all of those details correct.) As a grandmother, of course, I was asking all of the questions with my concerns about my grandchild's being born in Africa. It will be just perfect if there are no serious emergencies requiring sophisticated equipment for Suzanne or the baby.
I would like for everyone to pray thanking God for our wonderful medical care here in the United States. I remember when Joanna's baby Chase had to be put on a ventilator within hours after his birth and what wonderful care the ICU unit here at Huntsville Hospital provided. He was there for about 10 days. I would like to thank each of you who contributes to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering which completely supports our missionary children. It would be through the generosity of this offering that emergency care would be flown in should there be an emergency. I know many of you remember the emergency flight to France when our grandson Christopher was bitten by a rabid dog and no vaccine was available in Africa.
I know many of you pray for our missionary family and for the people with whom they work in Africa. Would you please include prayers for a safe pregnancy and delivery of this baby? God has blessed by giving them three gorgeous children and now this little baby they never dreamed they would have. Suzanne has given me permission to tell the whole sewing family about this baby and as always they appreciate so very much your prayers. They have absolutely no financial needs but they need and ask for your prayers as they minister to the people in Togo and Benin.
I might interject now how much I love the IMB of the Southern Baptist Church. Many missionaries around the world have to raise their own financial support. It is such a blessing that our Southern Baptist missionaries's needs are completely met.
We are having a wonderful Martha Pullen/Pfaff Licensed Teacher week here in Huntsville. I began the seminars Wednesday night with a personal profile mini-course teaching each person to recognize the learning styles of the students they will have in the classes which they will be licensed to offer at the end of the week. The Pfaff teachers will have 19 classes, including a 9 square quilt with many gorgeous techniques on the individual squares.
Our licensed Pfaff teachers are here from every part of the United States and one is here from Australia. This is a sewing group and a real think tank about business opportunities in building their teaching agenda. Many are already teaching; some have never taught a sewing lesson in their lives. This is the way our licensed teacher program is set up. Many in this group also have a custom sewing and embroidery business already in place. It is a wonderful group and we are having sew much fun.
During a licensing week not only do we "sew until we drop" learning new techniques, etc., we also explore ways to build a sewing business. Most of our licensed teachers run a home-based business teaching in other locations. A few dealer/teachers come to be licensed. Most teach inside a sewing machine dealership and all have our exclusively developed projects that only the licensed teacher can teach.
Many of our licensed teachers go on to teach in different places and for different groups. I am of the philosophy that if sewing isn't made easy and fun by the teacher, students won't come back. Our teachers know how to make sewing easy and fun and how to uplift their students so they will know that they are wonderful and smart and talented. That is one of the main purposes of the week - for our teachers to learn how to impart this philosophy to their students. They will study almost every heirloom technique and know how to teach this technique in a fun and easy manner.
Kathy Pearce has just returned from a wholesale market where she reported that Contemporary Heirlooms for the Older Girl, Six Easy Patterns for Women Only, and the two quilt books were total best sellers. Everybody bought linen - both handkerchief and cotton/linen blend to do Easter clothing for their older girls and for suits for themselves. Needless to say, this is the season for Swiss batiste, Martha's Favorite Batiste and Victorian Batiste as well as French lace and Victorian and Swiss embroideries.
If you have not made a suit for yourself from our Six Easy Patterns, please do so immediately. I have never in my life received so many compliments - such as "How much weight have you lost?" or "I love that suit" - as I received on my three new suits made using these patterns. The jackets are unlined and my favorite is the one which buttons all the way up the front and which has long sleeves. The kimono jacket is beautiful for summer but my favorite "skinny" jacket (which is also easy to make) is the one on the front of the book.
Actually, there are two on the front of the book - mine and Joanna's. For those of you coming to Puyallup, I will be wearing my new suits, and the Contemporary Heirlooms for the Older Girls designs will be modeled along with other children's and women's clothing in my fashion show each afternoon. I have a new slide show for the morning class and Kathy McMakin will be teaching a class also.
By the way, if you have the Heirloom Sewing for Jack and Jill book, you will probably never have to purchase another pattern to make classic clothing for your boys or girls! My favorite suit in the whole world (for a little boy) is the Sailor Suit, which is a one-piece suit, knicker length, that buttons up the front. If you have not made your little boy a suit by this pattern please do so before he gets too big to wear this type of clothing. I have had Ward and Chase's pictures taken in their one-piece sailor suits with the beautiful sailor collar. It is a copy of a little suit style popular around 1910 and it is even cuter today than it was in 1910.
I need sewing tips and recipes---please. Everybody loves the shared ideas from all around the world with tips and recipes. Please send to marthap@marthapullen.com and title your e-mail either "recipe" or "sewing tip." Thanks in advance.
One of the things we enjoyed so much about our trip to England were the three flea markets we attended. Friday morning at 5am we were at Burmunsey Market. Saturday morning we went to the world famous Portabello Road market. Wednesday morning we went to the very quaint Camden Passage market. You can just imagine that I purchased many "new" white Victorian garments to use on Martha's Sewing Room this year. Joe always asks me, "Honey don't we have enough old white clothes?" My answer to this is, "Honey, I always need at least 26 new garments for the television shows each year." Is that vague or what?
Portabello Road MarketActually, I bought a few more than 26 garments on this trip but some of them were great bargains. Bargains are hard to find in antique clothing. I did not mention to Joe about the ones which were not bargains! I think men don't need to know everything. Can some of you identify with that statement? Now, I did not tell any stories; I just did not mention prices except for the bargains.
By the way, I was looking especially for clothing and linens and old embroidery designs to convert into machine embroidery CD's for Martha Pullen Company. We have an antique one already in the works - which is third in line for our new CD line-up - but you will love it. Most of the designs on this CD came from finds from the England trip. PLEASE join or renew the IEC so you can purchase these new CD's as they become available, for $54 rather than $90!
We have so much excitement about to happen at Martha Pullen Company in the next few months that I can hardly stand it. I am not quite ready to announce exact plans yet but you will hear about things as soon we officially announce them. Stay tuned for the "world turning" as my grandmother used to say about life in general.
You are my sewing family and I love you with the love of the Lord. You are so very good to us and you are the heartbeat of Martha Pullen Company. God is the CEO as you all know by now. I thank God for each one of you.
May God Bless You,
Martha

SCRIPTURE OF THE WEEK 1 John 4:19-21
We love because he first loved us. If anyone says, "I love God," yet hates his brother, he is a liar. For anyone who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen. And he has given us this command: Whoever loves God must also love his brother.Today, we as a nation celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Since 1963, Dr. King's I Have a Dream speech has become the most famous public address of 20th century America. If you have never read or studied this speech, please go to the internet by typing in I Have A Dream Speech and you will be able to read it. I have re-read it today and have read it many times since it was delivered. After reading the scripture from 1 John, I have to understand that I must love all people more since this is the second greatest commandment from God. Jesus clearly stated that the two greatest commandments are to love the Lord my God with all of my heart and the second is to love our neighbors as ourselves (Matthew 36-39).
EXCERPTS FROM DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR'S SPEECH, I HAVE A DREAM
Delivered on the steps at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. on August 28, 1963
"I say to you today, my friends, that in spite of the difficulties and frustrations of the moment, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream.
"I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal.
"I have a dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.
"I have a dream today.
"This will be the day when all of God's children will be able to sing with a new meaning, "My country, 'tis of thee, sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing. Land where my fathers died, land of the pilgrim's pride, from every mountainside, let freedom ring.
"When we let freedom ring, when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God's children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual, "Free at last! free at last! Thank God Almighty, we are free at last!"
PRAYER FOR MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. DAY
FROM http://www.PrayersAtWork.com Copyright 2003 James H. Daughdrill, Jr.-Printed with permission from Dr. DaughdrillMonday, January 20, 2003 - (Meditation: I John 4:11-12)
God of love, grant Americans a true respect for others. Help us to treat everyone as a child of God. Help us look at the quality of others' character rather than at the color of their skin. During this time when our country celebrates the ministry of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., may our country also remember what motivated him - his Christian faith. Grant us hearts in which there is neither Jew nor Greek, neither male nor female, neither black nor white, neither brown nor yellow, but only love - love for every human being that You created, and for every human being that You love.
In Jesus' name. Amen.
