SWEET THANK YOU LETTER ABOUT THE INTERNET EMBROIDERY CLUB (IEC) AND THE GIFT OF THE MONTH CLUB FROM Charlotte Jockisch, Washington State
Dear Martha, This is my 3rd year right along with you in the IEC. I just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate this. Your designs are so exquisite. I made our God Daughter (6mo) a quilt using the bows that you have designed from either the IEC or the GOM (which I have also gotten all your designs since you started that one). I made several Christmas gifts this year using the Christmas designs. I am looking so forward to this next year of designs and the ideas that you make available to us thru GOM.
I am enjoying the Mantle Scarf from the first GOM, I made 5 and sent as Christmas gifts to our adult children and families. I have decided to make some more for our friends for Christmas 2003, as it is so nice and is the true meaning of Christmas. Thank You so much... May our Lord continue to bless YOU and your family as they are doing God's work. See you in Puyallup...
Dear Friends,
Happy New Year!! What a joy and gift from God to be able to begin another year. We believe we have the best year of sewing and embroidering and education planned for you than we have offered since we began Martha Pullen Company! We know for sure we have the best sewing family in the world and that includes you!
First, I would like to request sewing tips and recipes. Actually, I have more recipes to use for 2003 than sewing tips so please get busy and send me sewing tips! We love any kind of sewing tips including tips for quick and easy gifts for upcoming birthdays, weddings, Easter, Mother's Day, Father's Day, Valentine's Day and graduations. Can you share some special sewing treats you make for your loved ones? Please send your tips or projects with the subject "sewing tips" to marthap@marthapullen.com. If you have a recipe, please send it with the subject, "recipe" to the same address.
We leave for Orlando TODAY!! This is going to be the biggest and best sewing market we have ever had! We have more vendors than ever with the most beautiful things to sell and classes to teach. Honestly, I believe we have the most extensive variety of vendors of any show. And most of those designer/vendors teach wonderful classes with lots of new techniques and more ideas than you will ever be able to absorb. The show is actually this Thursday, Friday and Saturday with Jinny Beyer's lecture being on Friday night. Jinny will have her booth at the back of her lecture room -- you can purchase from her after her lecture and have her sign the books you buy. You must have a wristband for the Friday market plus pay $3 extra to attend Jinny's workshop.
Joanna, Cecil and Chase will be in Orlando with me. Joanna will be working and Cecil and Chase will model in the fashion show Thursday night. Joanna is thrilled to be traveling with me since she has been with me in this business since the beginning in 1981. When she was 6 or 7 years old she used to demonstrate the sewing machines especially the ease of making buttonholes.
Speaking of sewing machines, all of the companies will be vendors and they will demonstrate anything you ever wanted demonstrated about their machines. You can look at all of the brands under one roof and have the sewing experts each company has sent in demonstrate special features for you. We have lots of technology classes and machine embroidery classes offered this year. We also have hand sewing! This is a great time to purchase a new machine or serger since the prices will be VERY special. Many of our vendors will have special sales for you, and all of them will have fabulous goods.
Many of you remember that I opened this business because of having a little girl after four boys and all I wanted to do was sew for that little girl (who happens to be Joanna). I know many of you have seen her on the television show and a lot of you have had your little girls come to be students at Joanna's Sew Kool for Kids School here in Huntsville. She will be glad to sign any books along with me. Joe will be there with bells on you know he is the one who starred in the last issue of Sew Beautiful in that beautiful vest. He is still asking me when his vest just like that one will be ready. Oh, my, I have to work on that one.
Many of you have written that you are going to enter the contest. The $5 entry fee goes to the Russell Home for Atypical Children (which is our favorite non-profit organization in Orlando). We have great prizes including beautiful ribbons and lots of prizes! I have a fun little secret to share with you. About 25 of the design/costume department of MGM Studios in Orlando are coming for the market all day on Friday and are staying for the Jinny Beyer lecture.
Don't forget that you can purchase tickets at the door each morning beginning at 7am and the classes begin at 8. Just choose your classes and walk in the door. We have more than 70 classes offered each day and I bet, if you are like I am, you would like to take every one of the classes.
Kathy and I are looking forward to our two days of sit and sew on Tuesday and Wednesday with many of you. Most of our staff is already in Orlando setting up for the show, and we cannot wait to have you join us for the fun of learning, shopping and fellowship.
How would you like to receive $315 worth of machine embroidery designs for only $49? We have decided to extend the IEC discounted membership until January 20, 2003 (before it goes to its regular price of $59 per year). We wanted to do this for you on the internet e-mail newsletter since we have planned to offer membership in Orlando this week for the $49!

In addition to the machine embroidery designs (all formats - $315 of value) you also get monthly sales from Martha Pullen Company, antique pictures and historical poems and snippets from my personal collection. Many people who love history love this almost as much as the machine embroidery designs -- well not quite as much. The antique pictures are perfect for photo transfer to use on anything you would like to put them on. Many crazy quilters love these designs as well as those who love to make beautiful pictures for their homes with machine embroidered designs around these historical pictures.
In addition to all of this you will receive a HUGE discount, for a limited time, on all new Martha Pullen machine embroidery CD's. The regular price is $90: IEC members get the new Martha Pullen CD's for only $54 plus shipping for a limited time. After the IEC time is up, all Martha Pullen CD's go to their regular price. Actually, $90 is a good value for a designer machine embroidery CD with at least 20 or more designs per CD. Just check at any store and see the prices on the name brand machine embroidery CD's. Some of them sell for as much as $149! If you belong to the IEC, for a limited time you will get the name brand Martha Pullen designs for $54 plus shipping!
This year we are offering not one design per month but a total of 26 designs! That is in addition to the two machine embroidery alphabets you get to download immediately upon joining. In addition to the two bullion rosebud alphabets (upper case and lower case) we have an additional 10 pieces which coordinate with these two alphabets! We will have 23 (4X4) designs and 3 (5X7) designs (which will be split for smaller hoops).
We want all of our current members to renew quickly before the price goes to $59 and we want all of you who love machine embroidery to join our club! Please go to this web page to join. Our website financial transactions are completely encrypted for your security on all orders; however, if you would prefer to call in your membership, please call 800-547-4176 x 2 and give your payment information by telephone.
WE HAVE A BRAND NEW BOOK, Contemporary Heirlooms for the Older Girl. You can order it immediately by calling 800-547-4176, ext. 2 or from the internet store. These are very sophisticated, yet very proper and modest tailored clothing patterns for the older girl. All patterns are sized 6-16 and include a skirt, a princess top; dress pants and shorts a jacket, a flared top and an a-line dress. All of the tops have several sleeve choices from sleeveless to long sleeves. You can have fun sewing heirloom in garments that your older girls will really love or just using plain fabric and not doing any heirloom sewing at all.
For more info: click hereMy granddaughters Morgan Ross and Bradley are on the front cover, and Bradley, her friend, and my granddaughter Emma are on the back cover. The book has 79 pages plus three huge pattern pull out tissue sheets in the back of the book. There are 8 pages of full color details in the center of the book. These clothes were featured on our new PBS TV series, Martha's Sewing Room. You just won't believe what is in this book for only $19.95 plus $5 shipping. Although this was not written to be a child's sewing book, many of the patterns are certainly easy enough for your daughter's and granddaughter's to sew.
There are silk ribbon embroidery designs on denim -- how cool can you get with embroidery? Great rick rack techniques as well as lots of machine embroidery are found on some of the clothing. Please order yours immediately to begin your Easter and summer sewing.

One of our most wonderful days in England was on Sunday at Windsor Castle. We worshipped at St. George's Chapel at their morning service, shopped in the lovely town of Windsor which seems like it came straight from a Dickens novel (reminds me very much of Bath). After touring Windsor Castle, I am ready to announce that it just might be my favorite castle in England.
Photo by Arleen BalciunasWe especially enjoyed seeing Queen Mary's Doll House (about the size of my bedroom) and the two dolls given by the people of France in 1938 to Princess Elizabeth and her sister Princess Margaret Rose. The names of the dolls are France and Marianne. Talk about a doll wardrobe!! The dolls had a 360 piece wardrobe (trousseau) made with exquisite craftsmanship, entirely by hand, in the great French tradition of haute couture. I promise I'll talk about this wardrobe more in later newsletters.
I think I had better close for now. Happy New Year and may this be your best one ever. I truly appreciate each of you, my newsletter/sewing family.
May God Bless You,
Martha

NEWS FROM OUR MISSIONARY FAMILY IN AFRICA
We have just been to the game park not too far away. We saw an elephant, wart hogs, gazelle, water buffalo, baboons, crocodiles and many other animals at the park. We went with Sandy, Laverne, Tony, Marlene, Logan, and our kids, and all had a great time.
We had a joint service with another evangelical church at the new Baptist church in Natitingou that meets in our old school room at our old house. There were about 108 in attendance. Hallelujah! We started a soccer ministry with kids and had about 86 attend a 2 day camp in Natty right before New Years. We had about 13 decisions for Christ for the camp so it was good. We had Bible study, Scripture memory, soccer and a movie on our new projector.
Three Southern Baptist missionaries were killed in Yemen recently. Please pray for their families.
THIS NEWSLETTER IS IN MEMORY OF Dr. Martha Myers (Alabama), Kathy Gariety (Wisconsin) and Bill Koehn (Texas).
If you would like to read more about the incredible ministry these missionaries had in Yemen and about their work which will continue, despite the horrid tragedy, please go to the web site of the International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention. My prayers go out to their families, to the people they worked with and to the people of Yemen to whom they ministered. I thank God for their work in bringing the gospel to the people of Yemen. This web site said that Martha Koehn will remain in Yemen to continue their ministry. I know without a doubt that God can take a tragedy and make good things come of that tragedy. I praise God for their ministry and for the assurance that these three missionaries are having the best days of their lives in heaven with God. The web site has two beautiful letters written by Bill Koehn's daughters you might want to read.
SCRIPTURE OF THE WEEK
Matthew 28:16-20
Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."
My heart hurts to the very core over the death of the Southern Baptist missionaries in the hospital in Yemen. Since our children are missionaries in Africa you can certainly imagine my thoughts after praying so very hard for these missionaries' families and friends. I read recently in a devotional book written by Dr. Billy Graham about David Livingstone returning to his native Scotland after 16 difficult years as a missionary in Africa.
According to Dr. Graham, "his body was emaciated by the ravages of some 27 fevers that had coursed thorugh his veins during the year of his service. His left arm hung useless at his side, the result of his being mangled by a lion. Speaking to the students at Glasgow University he said, "Shall I tell you what sustained me during the hardship and loneliness of my exile? It was Christ's promise, 'Lo, I am with you always even to the end of the age.'" (Matthew 28: 20). Dr. Graham goes on to say, "That promise is ours as well. No matter what trials we face, Christ never leaves us. He is with us every step of the way! Keep that promise before you today, and always."
For over 15 years Joe went on many international mission trips to provide dental service in countries where AIDS was rampant. God protected him completely. The missionaries who were killed were not only were risking their lives by being in the country where there were dangers because of their Christian beliefs but also were risking their lives simply through practicing medicine and doing other hospital work in a third world country. I praise God for their lives and for those people who were helped physically and spiritually because of their ministry in Yemen.
When I re-read the scriptures above which are referred to as "The Great Commission" which directs me to "go and make disciples of all nations" and I truly believe "all nations" not only means Africa and international places but also people right next door to each of us. I believe this is not an option for me but a command. I must obey with more strength than ever in memory of those who were killed and in memory of those who are daily risking their lives in dangerous places to tell of our precious Lord. Please pray for missionaries around the world of many different denominations who have left their families and home land to "go and tell the world."
I have learned just this week that an individual who is a "friend of a friend" has made statements which let me know that this individual is a church goer who seems to know nothing of the saving power of Jesus or of what the Bible says about Heaven and who is going. This person might have some head knowledge of our Lord but appears to have no heart knowledge. I have to begin witnessing to this person even though I do not know this individual very well. I will do this in memory of these precious ones who were killed and in honor of all the rest of the missionaries who are away from their home land. Mainly I will witness to this individual because of the great commission and command of our Lord to do so.
If I am honest with myself, there are many individuals in my life that I need to witness to. I pray that God will give me the courage to witness and be a servant for Him, and that I will lead more people to Christ this year than in any year of my life. Since I have already stated that my goal for this year is God, helping more people know about Him is a priority in my life.
I would like to ask you to pray by name for our children who serve in Togo and Benin, West Africa. John, Suzanne, Sarah Joy, Rebekah and Christopher Crocker as well as their teacher LaVerne. Please pray for their safety and for their ministry so that many people may come to know our Lord as savior because they are there. John works in two different countries where the main religion is animalism. Please pray that through God's working through him and the African Christian leaders of Togo and Benin that the word can be spread quickly and completely.
Suzanne works with children at a local orphanage as well as with women's groups. Of course, her main job is being a wife and mother and home schooling the children, but her work extends far beyond her own family. My grandchildren all work in sharing the gospel to people in Africa, especially their little friends. LaVerne has several ministries in addition to home schooling our grandchildren along with Suzanne. Thank you for praying for our family. I know many of you are already doing this and have prayer groups in your churches praying for our children.

Wednesday, January 8, 2003 - (Meditation: Ephesians 4:31-32)
Almighty God, the anger I sometimes feel is like a hot coal that I want to use to burn those I'm angry with. But when I handle the red coals of anger, I, too, get burned. My heart chars. I either lash out, or I sublimate my anger and then take it out on myself or those I love. Forgive me when I won't let go of anger, and when I use it to soothe the "victim" within me that longs for attention, and longs to be right. Help me to forgive, even when I feel like I've been wronged. If anyone had reason to be angry, it was surely Jesus! But He wasn't. He died without anger, and with forgiveness for those who detested Him. God, may I die to anger, and live with Him in forgiveness and freedom. Amen.
MODERN RECIPES FOR THE WEEK FROM PAT SANDY
Here are two recipes that I have used over and over. The pie dough recipe is from an older farmer's wife and was given to my mother quite a few years ago. I have used it and have not cried over it as I did using other recipes. It is definitely not low fat, but it tastes excellent. I usually make it in quantity and freeze it in balls in my freezer. Hope you enjoy it if you try it.
FLOSSIE'S NEVER FAIL PIE DOUGH
Mix together 3 cups flour, 1 tsp salt, and 1/14 cup Crisco. Then add 1 Tbsp vinegar (apple) and one beaten egg. Mix and then add 1/2 cup milk. Chill for at least 2 hours before using (I usually chill over night). This can be rolled, re-rolled, frozen, thawed, refrozen, and used again. Cannot be over mixed or handled too much. The second recipe is an old Weight Watchers recipe I got and we make it often.
CHEESE SOUP
1 packet butter flavored mix prepared with 4 oz water
1 cup each carrots, celery, onion (sliced, chopped, etc.)
1 1/2 lb chopped cabbage
1 bunch broccoli, chopped, use stems
24 oz potatoes (red with peels on)
8 chicken bullion cubes
8 cups water
1 pound processed cheese (Velveeta)Combine all except the Velveeta cheese. Bring to boil. Simmer 2 to 2 1/2 hours. Add 1 lb processed cheese (Velveeta) cheese spread in chunks. Boil 30 minutes or more.
According to the old Weight Watchers scale of values, this equaled 1 protein, 1 bread, vegetable, 16 optional calories. (Note from Martha: Since Sandy did not mention how many portions this recipe makes, be careful counting the portion if you are following weight watchers. All you have to do on the new program is add the points for the potatoes and the Velveeta cheese. All the rest are free calories.)
I must admit I add a greater quantity of vegetables than it calls for. I want very thick soup. I also use any type of potatoes I can find as I can't always find the red potatoes. It doesn't work well with other types of cheeses, so always use Velveeta. We love it and it is great on a cool/cold day.
ANTIQUE RECIPE OF THE WEEK - The Delineator June 1921
Fruit Salad Dressing
1/4 cup pineapple juice
1 tablespoon flour
1/4 cup orange juice
3 tablespoons water
Juice of 1/2 lemon
1 egg
1/4 cup sugar
1/2 cup cream, whippedScald fruit juice. Mix sugar and flour, add cold water and mix to a smooth paste. Add beaten egg and stir in hot liquid slowly. Cook in double boiler, stirring constantly until thickened. Cool, and when ready to use fold in whipped cream. This makes about two cups of dressing.
