Three Fun Sewing Tips from Joan from Pennsylvania
1. Martha gave a great tip on one of her shows that really needs to be re-stated! The use of shish-kabob skewers is simply wonderful! I’ve used metal implements, (dental picks even!) and goose quills (that I paid too much for) and tried her suggestion. I’ve been working on items for our Church bazaar and found the skewers are simply the best! It took a while to get used to them because they’re a lot more flexible but you can sew over them (by mistake) without damaging your machine. Thanks for that tip!
(Note from Martha: Many years ago on my first of 28 trips to Australia to teach sewing I saw the women sewing with shish-kabob skewers in their hands. I had never seen that before but everyone was indeed holding a stick! I asked them about the sticks and they quickly explained that you can sew over a stick and probably the worst damage you can do is to break a needle. Using a metal “pusher” or “holder” might badly damage one’s sewing machine. I have been teaching using shish-kabob skewers ever since both on my TV show and in my classes. It truly is a magic trick and they do have “sewing supplies” at the grocery store.
That is a cute story that a lady sent me several years ago. She was in the grocery store with her little boy and they went by the section where bags of shish-kabob skewers are displayed. He screamed, “Mommy, Mommy they have sewing supplies right here in our grocery store.”)
2. If you’re stuffing little fingers or arms in teddy bears or dolls, etc., I’ve found that chopsticks work great! They don’t pierce the fabric and you can really pack the stuffing in tightly!
3. I make a lot of potholders and have for years. Since the one I keep for myself is usually the test one, sometimes I get pieces that fray a bit. I’ve found that odd bits and ends of lace are the PERFECT patch. The lace is strong, uses up leftover pieces and dresses up that old potholder. Just sew it with a good zigzag. Trims also work well. Pre-shrink first, of course!
Personal Letter from Martha
Dear Sewing Family,
I have some exciting family news. Our granddaughter Cecil Hammett (Joanna’s daughter) is taking a fashion class at Huntsville High School! I am VERY excited that she is showing interest in sewing and fashion design. She is in the ninth grade and I hope this leads to many more design and later sewing classes. Our daughter, Joanna Collins, majored in fashion merchandising at Texas Christian University. She took lots of sewing classes while there and joined me in the business upon graduation. After appearing on many of my TV shows and helping me design and write a couple of books, she retired from the sewing business to concentrate on selling real estate which is what she does now. SO I am excited to have Cecil’s interest begin to appear. She just might want to have a sewing/design business one day. Well I can dream can’t I? Actually she is interested in medicine at this point but we have lots of doctors and nurses who sew!
Actually Joanna had a machine embroidery business (Joanna Pullen Designs) for a period of time but the real estate business really began to keep her busy and she decided with her husband and six children she only had time for real estate. With my 18 grandchildren surely one of them will be interested in a sewing business someday!

Plans for the School of Art Fashion, February 5th to 9th, are well underway. In just a few weeks we will start the 32nd year of this school that once was just a dream of mine. The dream has been coming true in February and July for many years. Please click HERE to read more about our classes and come on down to Alabama in February.
Many of you know about my grandson Marshall’s skiing accident last week in Arizona. Your prayers are so appreciated and he is at home and doing well. More weeks of recuperation but we have been told he will be alright. I thank God for hearing all the prayers of my friends and family. I thank God for the healing. I thank God that he was not hurt worse than he was. Marshall is a classical guitar major at Northern Arizona State University.
My biggest news is that the business book is finished except for the back cover information and the index. It will be distributed through pullenpress.com which is not up yet but it is coming. I hope to have other distributors for book stores and sewing machine dealerships. Quite frankly, I have been trying to finish the book and have not yet searched for avenues for distribution. F+W Media will not be distributing, they tell me, since this is a business book not a craft book. This is a book about How God, Through a Schoolteacher, Turned Her Hobby into a Multi-Million Dollar Business. That is the sub title. I am saving the title for a surprise! Please watch my Martha Campbell Pullen, Entrepreneur Facebook page or my Martha Campbell Pullen Facebook page to know when it is ready for you to order. PS We will have print, digital and audio for you. I will start “reading out loud” at a recording studio probably late next week. I am very excited about having all three options for you, my beloved sewing family. You have asked for all three!
Just think you can even listen to me when you drive to work and back. Just kidding but it is the truth! The book is very long so it will last a long time on your morning commute.
My other business book Turn Your Hobby into Money, distributed by Lifeway and Martha Pullen Company, sold 10,000 copies. I pray this one is even better than the last. I have chapters on social media, networking, sales and marketing, going online, selling on Etsy, eBay, Facebook, etc., plus my story from beginning to the end. I have shared my mistakes in an effort that you will not make the same ones. I have shared, I think, the best section on planning which is so necessary to build a business. I have shared about the magic of planning with Mind Mapping. You know I went to England in December to become a Mind Mapping Licensed Trainer. More about that later.
You will love the scriptures laced all though the book and my passage from Exodus about Moses opening the Red Sea for the Israelites. This book shares how God has opened many Red Seas in my business to keep us going when I saw no way to do so. Through Him we walked right through difficult business situations on dry land. Praise be to God great things He has done. I am closer to God now than I have ever been and this book, I pray, illustrates that fact. God alone has kept this business alive and well for over 32 years. This book totally gives him the honor, glory and praise.
I pray for our men and women serving in harm’s way and for their families. I pray for you my beloved sewing family. I pray for you a lot. I ask God’s mercies on whatever is hurting you right now. I miss all of you. I got to meet so many of you when I was doing lots and lots of travel and I truly miss seeing you. Thank you for being my Martha Campbell Pullen Facebook friends. I keep up with a lot of you there. Never forget how much I love you because I really do. Never forget how much I appreciate your loyalty over the years. Without God, Joe Pullen and you, there would be no Martha Pullen Company today. We have had an incredible team who worked with us to bring you the products and the events. I thank them too!! Boy do I ever thank them!!
May God Bless You My Very Dearest Friends,
Scripture for the Week
I know this is a long passage for me to send to you this week. This is one of my main passages in my new book because I had to share the miracle that God gave to the Israelites after freeing them from the Egyptians. Read into the passage and read that God told Moses to tell the people “to get moving.” When I have thought in my business that there was nothing to do but sell our house, pay the bills and close, God has always told me to “get moving” since he was opening the Red Sea to lead us through to the other side. The sea always opened, we went through and here we are today. Praise be to God. God is the author and owner of all businesses. I thank God for Martha Pullen Company and all it means to me and to so many people around the world. I thank God for allowing us to create MPC and for allowing us to work there for so many years bringing joy to people through sewing. Please once again about God’s miracle in Exodus 14. Remember, totally remember, that he is still in the miracle business and he, if it is His will, can open that Red Sea in your life.
New Living Translation (NLT)
14 Then the Lord gave these instructions to Moses: 2 “Order the Israelites to turn back and camp by Pi-hahiroth between Migdol and the sea. Camp there along the shore, across from Baal-zephon. 3 Then Pharaoh will think, ‘The Israelites are confused. They are trapped in the wilderness!’ 4 And once again I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, and he will chase after you.[a] I have planned this in order to display my glory through Pharaoh and his whole army. After this the Egyptians will know that I am the Lord!” So the Israelites camped there as they were told.
The Egyptians Pursue Israel
5 When word reached the king of Egypt that the Israelites had fled, Pharaoh and his officials changed their minds. “What have we done, letting all those Israelite slaves get away?” they asked. 6 So Pharaoh harnessed his chariot and called up his troops. 7 He took with him 600 of Egypt’s best chariots, along with the rest of the chariots of Egypt, each with its commander. 8 The Lord hardened the heart of Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, so he chased after the people of Israel, who had left with fists raised in defiance. 9 The Egyptians chased after them with all the forces in Pharaoh’s army—all his horses and chariots, his charioteers, and his troops. The Egyptians caught up with the people of Israel as they were camped beside the shore near Pi-hahiroth, across from Baal-zephon.
10 As Pharaoh approached, the people of Israel looked up and panicked when they saw the Egyptians overtaking them. They cried out to the Lord, 11 and they said to Moses, “Why did you bring us out here to die in the wilderness? Weren’t there enough graves for us in Egypt? What have you done to us? Why did you make us leave Egypt? 12 Didn’t we tell you this would happen while we were still in Egypt? We said, ‘Leave us alone! Let us be slaves to the Egyptians. It’s better to be a slave in Egypt than a corpse in the wilderness!’”
13 But Moses told the people, “Don’t be afraid. Just stand still and watch the Lord rescue you today. The Egyptians you see today will never be seen again. 14 The Lord himself will fight for you. Just stay calm.”
Escape through the Red Sea
15 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Why are you crying out to me? Tell the people to get moving! 16 Pick up your staff and raise your hand over the sea. Divide the water so the Israelites can walk through the middle of the sea on dry ground. 17 And I will harden the hearts of the Egyptians, and they will charge in after the Israelites. My great glory will be displayed through Pharaoh and his troops, his chariots, and his charioteers. 18 When my glory is displayed through them, all Egypt will see my glory and know that I am the Lord!”
19 Then the angel of God, who had been leading the people of Israel, moved to the rear of the camp. The pillar of cloud also moved from the front and stood behind them. 20 The cloud settled between the Egyptian and Israelite camps. As darkness fell, the cloud turned to fire, lighting up the night. But the Egyptians and Israelites did not approach each other all night.
21 Then Moses raised his hand over the sea, and the Lord opened up a path through the water with a strong east wind. The wind blew all that night, turning the seabed into dry land. 22 So the people of Israel walked through the middle of the sea on dry ground, with walls of water on each side!
23 Then the Egyptians—all of Pharaoh’s horses, chariots, and charioteers—chased them into the middle of the sea. 24 But just before dawn the Lord looked down on the Egyptian army from the pillar of fire and cloud, and he threw their forces into total confusion. 25 He twisted[b] their chariot wheels, making their chariots difficult to drive. “Let’s get out of here—away from these Israelites!” the Egyptians shouted. “The Lord is fighting for them against Egypt!”
26 When all the Israelites had reached the other side, the Lord said to Moses, “Raise your hand over the sea again. Then the waters will rush back and cover the Egyptians and their chariots and charioteers.” 27 So as the sun began to rise, Moses raised his hand over the sea, and the water rushed back into its usual place. The Egyptians tried to escape, but the Lord swept them into the sea. 28 Then the waters returned and covered all the chariots and charioteers—the entire army of Pharaoh. Of all the Egyptians who had chased the Israelites into the sea, not a single one survived.
29 But the people of Israel had walked through the middle of the sea on dry ground, as the water stood up like a wall on both sides. 30 That is how the Lord rescued Israel from the hand of the Egyptians that day. And the Israelites saw the bodies of the Egyptians washed up on the seashore. 31 When the people of Israel saw the mighty power that the Lord had unleashed against the Egyptians, they were filled with awe before him. They put their faith in the Lord and in his servant Moses.
