WONDERFUL ANTIQUE SNIPPET FROM GODEY’S LADY’S BOOK AND MAGAZINE, JANUARY 1869
A Challenge from a Lady
To Wheeler and Wilson Sewing Machine Company
“Gentlemen: Referring to the challenge of Mr. Pratt, whose Wheeler and Wilson Sewing Machine has been in use ten years without repairing, I beg to state that I have used my Wheeler and Wilson Sewing Machine in family sewing fourteen years without even the most trifling repairs, and it is now in so good condition that I would not exchange it for your latest number (now upward of 350,000). One needle served me more than a year for fine sewing. Can anyone beat this? Yours truly, Mrs. Anne Warner
Anyone who can give a better report than this will be entitled to one of our new tucking gages. Wheeler and Wilson Manufacturing Company”
(NOTE FROM MARTHA: Can you even believe that she used one needle for a year??? Oh, what we know now that they did not know in 1869!!!)
SEWING IDEA FOR A MACHINE EMBROIDERED GIFT
Several years ago at one of our teacher licensings, the group made and presented to me a small embroidered framed picture on silk dupioni with one of our pretty bows, flower and dove embroideries in the middle with the words, “God is Love” in a beautiful script with 1 John 4:16 underneath the scripture. The embroidery then was in the middle of the picture. Underneath the embroidery were the words “and Sew is Martha.” This machine embroidered 5” by 7” picture reminds me of my mission in sewing and in life and I deeply appreciate the group thinking that my sewing and I represent God’s love. I might add that it has hung in a very special place in my hallway for many years now. If you are truly looking for a special gift to make for anyone who loves to sew, this is it!
Dear Sewing Family,
I know it is Thanksgiving week but I have an early Christmas present for you. Please go to MPTV and click to watch the preview of Lace Scallops DVD by yours truly. There are two links below this preview when it is opened. If you click on those links you can download the two more beautiful patterns you have ever seen. One for Lacy Scalloped T-Bonnet and one for Lacy Panel Pull-On Diaper Cover sized Premie through 24 months. These are the cutest patterns and the DVD which you can watch over and over if you join MPTV for the year. I can truly tell you that MPTV has the best sewing education in the industry and more than anyone else.
I am sitting here holding the new publication from MPC Called The Best of Smocking and Embroidery! Of course the articles are from the gorgeous Australian publication Australian Smocking and Embroidery. OH, ladies you will not believe what is in this gorgeous book!!!! There are eight multi-sized patterns plus many more article featuring techniques on patterns which can be purchase as downloads!! The techniques are unbelievable in this magazine. The smocking design plates are included for all of the patterns; and eight have the actual patterns in the book. There is the cutest little button on suit for a little boy smocked with ducks; the details including piping are magnificent. Of course there are the beautiful baby garments including my favorite pink smocked bonnet in the world!!!
I cannot pick a favorite but possibly “Heavenly Roses” in pale blue smocked with gorgeous bullion roses might be it. The pattern sized 12-24 months in included in the book. This dress just screams “Easter sewing” to me!! This whole book has christening clothes, bonnets, boy and girl things and truly is a dream come true. Easter sewing is one of the things I most look forward to.
If any of you have a first communion coming up in the next few years I cannot tell you how gorgeous “Angel” is. Made of Swiss batiste and silk organza the pure white smocking is studded with tiny pearls. A double row of satin ribbon is threaded across the lower bodice with each row bordered with a row of gleaming pearls!!!The organza overskirt is edged with wide satin ribbon and the dress ties at the back with a superb organza bow. It would also be the PERFECT flower girl dress for a spectacular wedding! The pattern is sized 6-12 years and is included in the book.
Priced at $14.99 this book is almost unbelievable in my opinion. I have paid this much for only one magnificent pattern in this smocking industry! The little cover dress is glorious also with the white angel sleeves and blue and pink smocking!!! The cover dress named “Tallulah” has the pattern included in sizes 6-18 months. Oh, my you cannot be without this new MPC publication.
I am so thankful for many things this Thanksgiving as well as every day of the year. I am thankful for God’s love 24/7 which sustains me through good times and bad. I am thankful that I live in America where we can worship as we please. I am thankful for my precious family and I am grateful that God gave me to my family specifically. Mama used to say “We are the most blessed family in the world.” I love telling all of my grands that now.
I am thankful for you, my sewing family for all of the love and loyalty you have given to me and to this business for nearly 32 years. I am so thankful that I have gotten to meet many of you personally over the years. You are truly beautiful people. I am thankful that you have allowed me-us-to come to your home in so many different ways-travel, PBS, MPTV, books, SB magazine, events, and much more. I am so thankful for all of our MPC team over the years. They are the best!
We are looking forward to a brand new year in 2014 with lots of sewing education from the big school February 5-9, 2014 to licensed teacher weeks to new books to Sew Beautiful magazine to MPTV with new video workshops and so forth and so on!!! I am especially excited about our brand new on-line Martha Pullen Licensed Teacher program which I will tell you more about soon!!!! This is totally a dream come true for me and for MPC.
So in closing I pray for our men and women serving in harm’s way and for their families. God, bring them home safely. I pray for you and your family. Never forget that I will always love you.
May God Bless You,
SCRIPTURE OF THE WEEK
Isaiah 43: 1-3
|1||…“Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine.|
|2||When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.|
|3||For I am the Lord, your God…”|
For William’s christening, Charlie and Jan Lyle brought him the most gorgeous embroidered pillow with his name, his birth and christening date and the scripture verse “I have called you by name, you are mine.” I just adored this scripture for a pillow for almost any occasion-for any age person. When I read verse 2 and 3 I realized, once again, that God is indeed with us when we are in deep waters and might drown. I have not actually been in any deep waters, literally, lately but I certainly have been in deep waters emotionally with different situations in my life. I feel certain everyone reading this devotional has “deep waters” in your life right now. I need to realize more completely that I will not drown or burn if I let God take me through the rivers and the fires in my life.
I shudder to think how I would get through difficult times-which seem to come most every day for most of us I think-without God to help me. I pray for God’s protection for our men and women in uniform fighting this horrid war. I pray for God to direct leaders to know what to do and when. I pray for God to stop terrorism and senseless killing all over the world. As our pastor, Dr. Jimmy Jackson said last Sunday, “Our troubles make us stronger.” Recently I read a very good article about raising children that we should be more concerned about their character and manners than about their attending sports events, lessons of every kind and being accomplished in things of the world. God and character gets us and our children through life’s difficulties. I pray that all of my children and grandchildren know completely that it is God who will get them through their difficult times-the deep waters and the fire. I call on that knowledge, daily, that my parents instilled in me as a child.
