This class is required if you are registered for the Beginning School, or it is a must if you are registering for a school that includes any heirloom sewing techniques and you have little or no French sewing by machine experience. Learn the correct stitch length and width setting for heirloom sewing and create samples of each beginning heirloom technique. You will learn the basics of heirloom sewing as you complete a lovely baby bonnet of Swiss Nelona, French laces and Swiss handloom.
*Knowledge of basic FMS techniques (pulling threads to gather lace, lace shaping, French seams) required. Hand embroidery limited to bullions, French knots, lazy daisies, stem stitch, and granites.
Into the making of baby’s clothes goes all the love, all the devotion, all inexpressible yearning that has symbolized motherhood for generations. What mother or "grandma-to-be" could resist making this elegant, scalloped T-yoke christening gown for that much-awaited bundle of joy! Corded pin stitched lace positioned using Debbie’s newest fusible thread technique embellishes everything from the fancy pintucked insertion trimmed bands and shaped embroidered yoke to the elaborate hemline on this angelic confection. Gathered French lace edging on the tiny puffed sleeves and neck is attached with a corded hemstitch; this entredeux replacement saves time, but more importantly keeps the neckline lace standing at attention. Add Debbie’s pin stitched baby placket and other "finishing secrets" used to make baby garments that are just as beautiful inside as out and you’ll still have lots of sewing time to work on this special heirloom treasure for the newest angel in your life. Student can choose to do an all white gown or choose to include a touch a pink to the project.
Swiss voile, French laces and silk organza are like icing for a cake and this sweet confection will be perfect for the special day! Enjoy three days with Gail Doane as you learn construction and embroidery techniques while creating this beautiful christening ensemble. The first day of this three-day class will focus on the construction of the sleeveless, yoke style Swiss voile baby gown. Design features of the gown include perfectly spaced ¼-inch tucks, French lace fancy bands, self-fabric baby piping, and hand embroidered accents. The hand features will be worked in DMC “satin” floss (rayon) and stitches covered will include bullion roses and double featherstitch. The embroidery colors for the hand embroidery will be pale pink roses paired with light green featherstitch; however, students can substitute white “satin” floss if they prefer a white-on-white project. On day two, students will construct the French lace bolero style jacket, which features row after row of French lace insertion worked over a base of silk organza. French lace edging is shaped around the outside edges of the jacket. Day three will continue with the dress construction, hand embroidery and instruction on the matching bonnet to complete the classic three-piece ensemble.

This class is for students entering the 3rd, 4th and 5th grades. Kids always love making things and giving them away to help others, and our Charity Sew day is always lots of fun! Our educators have planned a wonderful sewing project for our kids to share with children at our local hospital. Students will make colorful pillowcases for the “Benjamin Smiles Foundation.” They will coordinate fabrics and trims and add the official “Benjamin Smiles” label to the pillowcases. Kids will be given the opportunity to take one of the pillowcases to someone in their own school or community. The pillowcases will be presented to a Huntsville Hospital representative during the Sunday lunch. The optional evening session includes a light dinner and a movie. Accompanying adult must be enrolled in a pre-day class also.
