Workshop Class Machine Use Policy

  1. If you are taking a Baby Lock, Pfaff, Viking or Bernina Schools, you can check out that brand machine at no charge IF a machine is not provided for your workshop class.
  2. If you are taking the other 4-day schools, you will need to bring your own sewing machine.
  3. If you are interested in renting a machine to use during the school, you can contact our local dealerships to inquire about machine rental. Contact us for more info.

Three-Hour Workshop Class
Sunday July 21, 2013 (4:30pm – 7:30pm)

01. Beginning French Machine Sewing

Kathy McMakin – 3 hours (Pfaff Machine Provided)

Cost: $65.00 including kit

This class is required if you are registered for the Beginning School, or if you are registering for a school that includes any heirloom sewing techniques and you have little or no French sewing by machine experience. In this class you will learn the correct stitch length and width setting for heirloom sewing and create samples of each beginning heirloom technique. You will learn the basics of heirloom sewing as you complete a lovely baby bonnet of Swiss Nelona, French laces and Swiss handloom.

02. Serger Knit Baby Daygown

Alicia Welcher – 3 hours (Baby Lock Machine Provided)

Cost: $65.00 including kit

KNITSCan a baby ever have too many daygowns? You will never want to put your baby down when they are wearing this precious knit daygown! Cuddly soft-as-butter knit sewn together in a flash with your serger. If you are afraid of sewing on knits, this is the perfect class for you! Differential feed is definitely your friend when serging on any kind of stretchy fabric. Learn all about differential feed while learning how to put in neck bindings, sleeve bindings, seam and hem finishes. This daygown is cute, cute, cute and a must for any baby’s wardrobe.

03. Traditional Styled Smocked Dress

Gail Doane – 3 days (Hand & Pfaff Machine Provided)

Intermediate Class – Basic smocking knowledge required

Cost: $330.00 including kit

Join Gail Doane for three days of everything you need to know from start to finish about the traditional styled smocked dress. The sweet smocked yoke dress will be made from white dotted Swiss fabric. Learn how and why Gail removes the dots from the fabric and applies interfacing to the area to be pleated. Eleven pleated rows of smocking will be worked in shades of robin’s egg and pink using basic trellis stitch and cast-on stitch spiral roses. The white Swiss voile platter collar will be embellished with shaped robin’s egg blue micro check spaghetti bias and more spiral roses to coordinate with the smocking design. The edge of the collar and short sleeves will be finished with a bridging stitch (hand) connecting to micro-check spaghetti bias. The pattern provided in class will include sizes 4 through 8 for girls.

04. Buds & Blue Scallops Pinafore

PinaforeDo you love the look of contrast hems, but lack the time required to prepare Madeira bands? Then shadow scallops, a fast and easy way to add a touch of elegance to garments, and home dec projects, might be just what you are looking for. In class, students review basic shadow appliqué sewing techniques, including proper pivot positions for curves and points, then apply techniques learned to create an adorable toddler pinafore accented with blue scallops, curved double needle pin tucks, and sprinkled with delicate rosebud hand embroidery. With its optional attached slip this sweet set is perfect for toddlers on the go, whether off to a summer birthday party or an afternoon picnic at the playground. The pattern will be provided for sizes 2T though 5.

05. Perfectly Puffed Dress

Trisha Smith – 2 days (Pfaff Machine Provided)

Cost: $220.00 including kit

Trisha’s focus when designing this project was to create a tailored heirloom style dress. The bodice is made of wide beading with ribbon and Trisha’s new and innovative puffing technique. The lower edge of the bodice is accented with wide beading which allows for ribbon ties at the side seams. The dress has a full gathered skirt with multiple 1/2-inch tucks above the hemline. Learn how to make Trisha’s “Perfect Puckerless Placket” while making this skirt. The neck and armhole edges are finished with a sweet, narrow ruffle. The dress pattern will be available in size 2 through 10 for girls.

06. Child’s Draping Class

Joi Mahon – 2 days (Child’s Dress Form Required)

draping mage- JoiSummer at the Martha Pullen School is the perfect time to learn how to create your very own children’s patterns. Spend two full days learning how to drape beautiful kids garment patterns with Designer Joi. Patternmaking classes are always fun and Joi really brings design down to everyone’s level. Students will learn the basics of kids draping, tips on sewing for kids, body measuring for kids, and so much more. This class was specially requested for summer so sign up early. Students will need a child’s draping form and there are several options available. Arrangements through Joi will be made prior to the July school for your form.

07. Christening Blanket

Connie Palmer – 1 day (Baby Lock Machine Provided)

Cost: $110.00 including kit

Join Connie Palmer in making an heirloom treasure, a christening blanket made of soft Swiss cotton sateen fabric. The beautiful white blanket will be quilted by machine using small satin stitch dots randomly placed in the center section. Rows of spaghetti bias and rickrack form a frame around the quilted center. Learn Connie’s technique for finishing the edges of this sweet blanket with a mitered corner binding. This heirloom christening blanket will be a perfect companion to Connie’s 4-day school project.

08. Darling Ducklings Sunsuit

Debbie Glenn – 1 day (Machine)

*Intermediate (Knowledge of basic garment construction—French seams, piping application and casings—required. Pin stitch or blanket stitch required. Hand embroidery limited to 3 straight stitches.)

DarlingRomperWhether off to splash in a puddle or play in the park, your little one is going to look adorable in this darling white lawn sunsuit embellished with a pin stitched shadow appliqué duck family floating on a blanket-stitched scalloped sea. For an added touch of color the white lawn pants of this sweet bubble are lined in lavender broadcloth, the waistband in seafoam and blue lawn piping trims the bib. Two duck buttons on the back belt add interest from behind. If you love hand shadow embroidery but lack the time for labor intensive handwork, join Debbie for the day and learn how to recreate shadow work by substituting outlined trimmed fabric for closed herringbone stitched thread. From creating favorite animals or nursery rhyme characters to shaped bands, this delicate form of appliqué is a quick and easy way to create a special wardrobe. The sunsuit pattern will be available in 12month, 24month and 3T sizes for your choosing.

09. Shortcake Double Ruffle Dress

Learn a new variation of The Cottage Mama’s Shortcake Reversible Romper and Dress pattern. In this class Lindsay will discuss the combination of different printed fabrics while teaching you how to create a whimsical ruffle front dress that is perfect for every day. What starts out as a dress becomes a darling top when paired with pants as your little one grows. The dress will be made with three coordinated print fabrics and rickrack trim. The pattern includes size 6months through 6 years.

10. Luxurious Fibers

Debbie Homer-Hofhines – 1 day (Viking Machine Provided)

Color Choice: White or Multi
Bring your imagination and need for instant gratification to this “short-cut” technique class! Debbie will help you create a beautiful full-length scarf made of yarns and fibers while using the Viking machine provided in class. It could take you days to knit this adorable scarf, but when you join Debbie you will learn how Wet N Gone Tacky stabilizer can help you create it in just a few hours. You will also embellish the scarf while learning how to create perfect free-standing embroideries using Floriani embroidery designs. Students will choose a white scarf kit with various white and cream yarns, trims and ribbons or a multi-colored scarf kit containing black, hot pink, teal and lime yarns, trims and ribbons.

11. Fur Flocked Lace Fashion Vest

vestIn this workshop students will have the opportunity to learn a truly brand new technique developed by Designer Joi. Her technique combines fur and lace in a fun new fashion. She recently won people’s choice award in the ASDP Professional Lace Challenge with her new technique. Students will have their choice of a variety of Chantilly laces and faux fur and will create their very own flock vest.

15. Pleated Bodice Dress

This dress features a technique known as Origami which is the art of Japanese paper folding.  The dress bodice is created with precisely stitched tucks that are then pinched and tacked together to create a diamond shape.  Hand embroidery accents the center of each diamond shape for a lovely effect and the tacking stitches that created the tucks are covered with bullion embroidery stitches adding additional color and interest to the dress.  The sleeveless dress buttons down the back and has a V-neck shape back bodice.  Corded piping and a contrasting band for the hem complete the look.  This dress is available in sizes 4 – 10.

Your kids will love seeing how easy and fun it is to combine fabrics, cut fabric pieces and sew up an adorable wallet and then they will make a key fob that they will enjoy adding to with their own personalization. This first-day project is perfect for getting students comfortable with using the sewing machine and ready for the sewing week ahead. Lunch and snacks will be provided during the class time. Teens will create a fun ruffle skirt made from a combination of solid and print cotton fabrics. Layers of ruffles are left with raw edges, as seen in trendy teen styles. Students will learn about layering gathered ruffles and also measuring for a perfect skirt fit. Lunch and snacks will be provided during the class time. The optional evening session includes a light dinner and special teen craft project.

17. Vintage What-Not Bag by Serger

vintage-whatnotLearn heirloom serger techniques, serger piping and adding a zipper by serger – all in three hours! You don’t even have to have any serger experience. This multi-pocketed little “keeper-of-things” is created from classic cotton, embroidered insertion, French lace, beading and ribbon. A ruffle of Victorian edging completes the flap-front and a solid lining is fashioned of Classic Cotton chosen to match the ribbon color. A petite spaghetti bias bow adds just the right amount of “cute” to your finished project. This “keeper” could also be used for the ultimate gift card holder or simply add a strap to convert to a small purse. Using this great bag over and over again will help you remember the serging tricks and techniques you learned from heirloom serging master, Kathy McMakin.

Want to learn how to use your Martha Pullen Creative Monograms software?  Here’s your chance!  During this session, you will learn how to create a monogram and add motifs and frames or even designs from your personal collection.  You will also learn to edit your monograms by resizing all or parts of your design, changing and re-sequencing colors and much more. Finally, you will stitch out your creation and see how beautiful it is!  Note: Creative Monograms software must be installed and running on your laptop prior to coming to class.

Join Connie Palmer and create a christening heirloom. This beautiful advanced heirloom bib and burp-cloth are for a very special day. The projects will be made from white Swiss cotton batiste with a very soft and absorbent lining. The bib is not only a beautiful project but packed full of advanced heirloom lessons. Learn Connie’s tips and techniques for creating tiny release tucks that fall from the neckline bound with a tiny bias binding. A curved band of spaghetti bias and baby rickrack adorns the edges of the shaped bib. The outside edges are embellished with slightly gathered lace edging. Machine embroidery will be the focal point of the bib center. This sweet christening bib and burp-cloth will coordinate with Connie’s 4-day school project.

The Ruby Ruffle Dress by The Cottage Momma is a great dress for many ages. This sweet a-lined style dress buttons at the shoulders and is fully lined. The center panel has three tiered ruffles and a fabric bow. The dress will be made from two contrasting print cotton fabrics. The Ruby Ruffle Dress pattern is available in sizes 6months through 10 for girls.

 

21. Butterfly Trinkets

Unique trinkets can add interest to any décor. Debbie will show you how to use organza and Wet N Gone to create these beautiful treasures with the Viking Sewing & Embroidery machine. The focal point of the tote bag will be the embellished layered flower that adds multi dimension to the project. Register for this exciting Viking class and sew this beautiful lined dress with the pattern designer herself and learn her tips and techniques for perfect scallops every time. Learn Lindsay’s tips and techniques for adding piping to the dress armholes. Use buttons and trims to add that special touch of embellishment. The dress will be made in size 2/3 for girls. The pristine white Swiss batiste dress is accented with ecru French laces. The focus of this dress is the sleeves and yoke. Kathy will share tips for the machine appliqué cord technique that creates the decorative yoke seams. Beautiful French lace edgings are pinstitched underneath the bias neckband and the cap sleeves have layers of ecru French lace edgings for a truly vintage look. Hand-made ecru silk ribbon rosettes finish the dress front and sweet pearl buttons close the dress back.

Kids always love making things and giving them away to help others, and our Charity Sew day is always lots of fun! Our educators have planned a wonderful sewing project for our kids to share with children at our local hospital. Students will make colorful pillowcases for the “Benjamin Smiles Foundation.” They will coordinate fabrics and trims and add the official “Benjamin Smiles” label to the pillowcase. Kids will be given the opportunity to take one of the pillowcases to someone in their own school or community. The pillowcases will be presented to a Huntsville Hospital representative during the Sunday lunch. The optional evening session includes a light dinner and a movie.

This class is required if you are registered for the Beginning School, or if you are registering for a school that includes any heirloom sewing techniques and you have little or no French sewing by machine experience. In this class you will learn the correct stitch length and width setting for heirloom sewing and create samples of each beginning heirloom technique. You will learn the basics of heirloom sewing as you complete a lovely baby bonnet of Swiss Nelona, French laces and Swiss handloom.
