Two Easy Summer Technique Tutorials!

Summertime is just around the corner, and that means it’s time for some easy breezy sewing projects! Simple summer garments make the perfect canvas for special creative details, and today I’d like to share a couple of fun embellishment ideas with you: a flip-flop ribbon trim and an interlocking scallop bodice. Both of these easy techniques were featured on Martha’s Sewing Room:

Flip-Flop Ribbon Trim

Flip-Flop Ribbon Trim

Flip-Flop Ribbon Trim: This is a really fun technique created by our longtime former Sew Beautiful editor Kathy Barnard. It’s perfect for adding a touch of grosgrain ribbon to any happy little summer dress, like our Summer Separates pattern. The decorative technique adds additional color contrast to a seam, and the ribbon tabs are anchored with a tack stitch on the “skirt” side to keep them standing up. The tabs on the “band” side are not anchored because they will naturally lay down.

The technique was introduced on episode #3112 of Martha’s Sewing Room – you can watch a free video of the flip-flop ribbon trim segment here, and you can also download a free PDF of the written instructions. This full episode of Martha’s Sewing Room also shows you how to: create bias tubing cathedral window loops on an heirloom blouse, embellish a ready-made knit blanket and hand embroider a backstitch rose with silk ribbon.

Interlocking Scallops

Interlocking Scallops

Interlocking Scallops: Here’s another idea – give your favorite basic bodice pattern a redesign for summer! In just a few steps, you can alter a basic one-piece bodice pattern to create interlocking scallops on the upper bodice, which allows you to fashion a yoke and lower bodice from contrasting fabrics. This is a great way to mix and match fun fabric prints, and you can choose your own shape and where to put it. The creative possibilities are endless.

This technique was featured on episode #3402 of Martha’s Sewing Room – watch the free video of the interlocking scallops segment here. This full episode of Martha’s Sewing Room also teaches you basic heirloom sewing techniques, how to decorate a linen tea towel with spaghetti bias shaping and more.
