Summertime is just around the corner! From bright and colorful garments with fun embellishments to simple little beach outfits, there are so many adorable things you can make little ones this time of year. Below, I’ve pulled together a handful of cute summer project ideas for girls. There’s precious dresses, tops and more to keep your little girl dressed as cute-as-can-be all summer.
Sandpiper Dress: This sleeveless white linen dress designed by Kathy Dykstra is the perfect little beach dress. The apron overskirt is smocked with bullion roses and rosebuds, and the shoulder straps fasten with self-cover buttons. Rows of white linen frills cascade down the back and around the lower edge of the underskirt. The pattern (sizes 3, 4 and 5 years) is included in Australian Smocking & Embroidery issue 88.
Spring Fling Dress: This ruffled pinafore dress designed by Kari Mecca is perfect for warm weather. It’s a great design for mixing and matching fun prints and those ribbon straps are precious. The pattern (sizes 18 and 24 months) is included in Sewing with Whimsy.
Flora Dress: How cute are these sundresses designed by Susan O’Connor? Bright and cheerful prints coordinate perfectly with the simple smocking design and bow trim. The pattern (sizes 6, 8 and 10 years) is included in Perfect Party Dresses.
Shell Cropped Top: This scalloped top designed by Kathy Dykstra blends real sea shells with smocking and lace. You can use any pants pattern to make matching shorts or pants (get instructions for creating a scalloped pant hem here). The top pattern (sizes 3-6 years) is included in the Jul/Aug ’11 issue of Sew Beautiful (#137).
Halter and Capri Pants: This sweet halter top designed by Kenya Wilcott may be made with or without smocking. On the non-smocking version pictured here, rickrack secures the rows of gathering and is embellished with a daisy button at each end. The pattern (sizes 3-6 years) features coordinating capri pants and is in Sew Beautiful: Heirloom Sewing Favorites for Summer.
