Spring Sewing Ideas and Inspiration

Spring is in the air, and that means all sorts of exciting things in the world of sewing! There are a host of special occasions and celebrations to sew for this time of year, from Easter to weddings to christenings and more — and warm-weather patterns and pretty pastel and floral print fabrics are just calling to be all stitched up into one-of-a-kind creations. Below, I’ve gathered together a handful of cute spring patterns for little ones available from our online store – I hope you find something that inspires you:

Spring Sewing Ideas: Antique Wrap Dress and Puffed Sleeve Dress

Antique Wrap Dress – This little heirloom dress designed by Cheryl Davidson is a reproduction of a garment from Martha Pullen’s antique collection. It has no side seams – only shoulder seams and a center back skirt seam – making it great for beginners and quick and easy for more advanced sewists. The pattern (sizes 2T – 6 years) is included in the Jan/Feb 2012 issue of Sew Beautiful (#140).

Puffed Sleeve Dress – Nobody does whimsical warm weather designs for little girls quite like Kari Mecca. This adorable puffed sleeve dress from her Sewing With Whimsy book is classically styled with a Peter Pan collar, a woven ribbon sash, and of course one of Kari’s signature whimsy trim embellishments. The pattern (sizes 2-6 years) is included in Sewing With Whimsy.

Pretty In Pink Dresses – Issue 99 of Australian Smocking & Embroidery is a great issue for pretty spring and summer designs. The patterns for all four of these sweet smocked dresses (and more) are included in the issue: Briar Rose designed by Lesley Fletcher (sizes 4, 5 and 6 years), Sweetheart designed by Gail Doane (sizes 3, 4 and 5 years), Annabelle designed by Julie Graue (sizes 3, 4, 5 and 6 years) and Sumer Breeze designed by Cathy Gunn (sizes 5, 6 and 7 years).

Spring Sewing Ideas: Ava Dress and Grant’s Vintage One-Piece Romper

Ava Dress – This sweet dress designed by Lesley Fletcher features a beautifully smocked bodice and a crisp Peter Pan collar embroidered with little bullion loop flowers. The pattern (sizes 2, 3, 4 and 5 years) is included in issue 91 of Australian Smocking & Embroidery. A step-by-step tutorial for stitching the bullion loop flower is also featured here on our blog.

Grant’s Vintage One-Piece Romper – Another antique reproduction from Sew Beautiful, this clever one-piece suit makes the perfect springtime outfit for baby boys. Laurie Anderson based the design on an antique suit discovered at a vintage shop in Texas. The pattern (sizes 6M – 24M) is included in our June/July 2014 issue of Sew Beautiful (#154).
