Want to join the Martha Pullen team live and in-person? Registration is now open for the School of Art Fashion Boutique in Minneapolis, MN on November 7 and 8! We are offering four fun schools at this retreat: sew an adorable little girls outfit and matching doll dress with Connie Palmer and Kathy McMakin; make marvelous home decor projects with Pam Damour; create a collection of travel bags with Katie Bartz; or join Cynthia Guffey for a fit and design workshop focusing on the skirt. Let’s take a closer look at the classes.
Thoroughly Modern Marjorie with Connie Palmer and Kathy McMakin
Everybody loves Connie Palmer’s classic Marjorie dress pattern, but wait until you see this adorable updated version of it! Connie has added all sorts of wonderful details, from tiered ruffles to rickrack embellishments and a double ruched overlay. This project is a great way to discover how to make use of sewing machine accessory feet and a serger, too, so all your special touches are easy to make. In addition to the dress and coordinating leggings, you’ll make a little girl’s cross-body purse to go along it AND a pattern and enough fabric to make a companion outfit for your little girl’s 18” doll. Throughout this retreat, you’ll get hands-on practice with all the easiest ways to create Connie’s wonderful details, and enjoy Kathy McMakin’s serger tricks.
Home Decor Mini Retreat with Pam Damour
Join Pam Damour in this productive, creative, practical and fun mini-retreat for home décor techniques. Day one will be dedicated to creating a perfect pillow. You’ll explore techniques for embellishment, construction and finishing, then determine which you’d like to incorporate into your own project. Day two begins with fabric selection, and a fun day of hammers, cutting and stitching as you make your own upholstered footstool.
Pack It In: A Travel Collection with Katie Bartz
Want to make a set of projects designed to help you travel, organize and keep it all together? Katie Bartz’ retreat is for you! It includes a wonderful collection of travel projects, including an expandable, quilted duffel bag; a quartet of project portfolios (perfect for organizing and transporting your retreat projects from place to place); and a fabric toolbox – a roomy wire-framed zippered box that’s the perfect size for storing all your sewing tools. Coordinate your travel collection in matching fabrics, or make each piece unique – either way, you’ll learn lots of sewing and embroidery techniques and helpful hints during your time with Katie.
The Skirt: A Fit and Design Workshop with Cynthia Guffey
Whether you live in skirts or haven’t worn one in years, Cynthia Guffey’s retreat will help you become a confident designer of wonderfully fitting skirts. Begin with creating your waist-to-hip shape — the starting point for designing skirts that fit you well. You’ll explore the all-important issue of grain: how using fabric on the bias influences the drape of a skirt, and how to control shape by using the straight-of-grain. You’ll come to understand darts, too – where they are, why they are, and how to move them (and even remove them) to achieve the style you’re after. Learn to add fullness in just the right places and take it away in the wrong ones as Cynthia helps you find your most flattering silhouettes. Consider some of the options: maxi, midi, knee and mini; pencil, A-line, flared, gored, pleated, gathered, tiered and circle; waistband (contour or not), faced waist and yoke. From fast and easy to tailored, business-ready fashion, your skirt options will be limitless!
All School of Art Fashion students will receive free general admission to the Minneapolis Original Sewing & Quilt EXPO, which will be held immediately afterward in the same venue Nov. 9-11. At the EXPO, shop at the Martha Pullen retail booth, see fashion shows and take more classes with your favorite MPC teachers.
