Sneak Peek at the March School of Art Fashion

Our events team is heading to Lakeland, Fla. this March for our first live event of 2017: the School of Art Fashion Boutique! The fun begins March 13, and we have five terrific school options for you. Become a licensed Martha Pullen teacher with me, Alicia Welcher and Connie Palmer; create an art quilt with Ellen Osten; make a collection of travel bags with Katie Bartz; join Cynthia Guffey for a fitting clinic; or get a lesson in design and fit from Judy Kessinger and Jo Vecchiarelli. Let’s take a closer look:

The Prefect Mix Licensing EXPRESS

Martha Pullen Licensing EXPRESS: The Perfect Mix
Instructors: Kathy McMakin, Alicia Welcher, Connie Palmer
We’re so excited to offer our popular ‘The Perfect Mix: Sew, Serge, Embellish’ teacher licensing for the first time as The Perfect Mix Licensing EXPRESS. Licensing EXPRESS is designed to give you the whole curriculum (yes! the entire curriculum), along with the experience of a face-to-face retreat, in a shorter time frame. As always, you’ll use the most beautiful kits and lovely threads, learn the best techniques and all the tricks for certain success … all while stitching on a brand new EPIC – the latest top of the line embroidery and sewing machine from Husqvarna Viking.

The Perfect Mix curriculum includes over 30 projects with 15 specifically selected kits for you to choose to work on during your time with us. And, as a new bonus, you will have lifetime access to watch the videos and review all the lessons and techniques when The Perfect Mix appears as an online licensing course.

A Backyard Study

A Backyard Study
Instructor: Ellen Osten
Explore a variety of machine techniques and embellishments as you create your own wallhanging under the guidance of Sulky’s Ellen Osten. Starting with a fabric panel from Frond Design Studio, you’ll immerse yourself in the artful application of a host of sewing and quilting techniques, including an updated quilt-as-you-go method. But there’s lots more: couching and applique, free motion stitching, quilting straight lines (really straight!), stitching in the ditch to best advantage, easy ways to work with invisible thread and manage metallic and heavier threads successfully … a bit of paper piecing … and how to use the machine’s built in stitches in new ways, too.

Pack It In: A Travel Collection
Instructor: Katie Bartz
Katie Bartz is a genius at designing projects that help us travel, organize and “keep it all together.” She’s designed a wonderful collection of projects for this retreat, including an expandable, quilted duffel bag; a quartet of project portfolios (perfect for organizing and transporting your retreat projects from place to place); and a fabric toolbox — a roomy wire-framed zippered box that’s the perfect size for storing all your sewing tools. Coordinate your travel collection in matching fabrics, or make each piece unique — either way, you’ll learn so many sewing and embroidery techniques and helpful hints during your time with Katie.

Design and Fit from Top to Bottom

Design and Fit from Top to Bottom
Instructors: Judy Kessinger and Joe Vecchiarelli
Learn how to use dress forms and flat patterns together to achieve the perfect fit in this workshop. You’ll create your own “body double” dress form and work with a draped bodice. Plus, sew with top and pants patterns designed for your exact body measurements and more. You’ll learn how to compare and contrast your draped bodice with a paper pattern and explore how you can use the information for fit and design purposes.

Fitting Clinic: Fine Tuning for a Superior Silhouette
Instructor: Cynthia Guffey
Get an in-depth lesson on fitting in this personalized clinic with Cynthia Guffey. Bring three patterns you’ve altered to the best of your ability, and the mock-up for each. Cynthia will help you refine the looks – as you learn how to fit for comfort, function and fashion and create a wardrobe of flattering clothes you’ll love.
