Sew, serge and embellish with us in this new online licensing!

It’s here! Our new online licensing — The Perfect Mix: Sew, Serge, Embellish — is now open for registration. This course is the latest, and some say the greatest, Martha Pullen Teacher Licensing curriculum to be offered online. Taught by Kathy McMakin, Alicia Welcher, Connie Palmer and Missy Billingsley, this licensing includes the “perfect mix” of projects and techniques. There are more than 20 projects in all, ranging from easy but clever beginner-friendly items to glorious heirlooms. Let’s take a closer look at these projects.

Heirloom Baby Layette

The projects you’ll receive have been created with every type of sewist in mind—and each individual project is designed to share a certain collection of techniques. There’s a terrific blend of techniques featured, from serging and embellishing to hand stitching and sashiko details. But, don’t worry; you don’t need to own an embroidery machine (or sashiko machine or embellisher) to get your Martha Pullen License. If you don’t own a serger, that’s not a problem, either. There are directions for completing the required techniques and projects using a sewing machine instead.

The list of projects includes lots of wonderful items for babies and children, including an heirloom baby layette that includes a dress/bubble, bib, booties, burb-cloth, bib and blankets. There’s a self-binding baby blanket, a “sleepy time” pillow and cute door pillows that say “Shhh, Baby Sleeping.” Of course, there’s also a gorgeous christening gown and slip, and companion dresses for girls and dolls to accompany it. There’s also a cute “dolly and me” jumper and ruffled pants ensemble and an absolutely precious ruching and rickrack overlay dress. Oh, and little ones are sure to love the “under the sea” child’s backpack!

There are a bunch of fantastic home decor projects, including a woven lattice table runner, mitered napkins with napkin rings and serge-and-flip placemats. There’s a fun “sew sassy” kitchen towel, a magnificent lacy heirloom pillow, an heirloom sampler quilt and a special licensing mug rug.

Heirloom Sampler Quilt

There are ladies’ garments, bags and accessories, too! You’ll love the timeless lacy heirloom blouse, the bergello tote bag, the “fun and fancy” makeup bag, the knit infinity scarf, the eyeglasses holder and more!

Constructed in a variety of design styles, each item in the collection provides a lesson appropriate for beginners, intermediate and advanced skill-level students.

So how does an online licensing course work? With help from both instructional videos and written patterns/instructions, our team of expert instructors will introduce the basics to you and then, project by project, guide you to mastery of all the techniques used to complete all the projects in this curriculum. These experienced educators teach by example, and so while you’re learning the easiest, best methods, you will also pick up tips on how to effectively and easily share the information with others.

The online licensing learning experience is incredibly convenient, and our instructors will be just a click or call away to answer any questions you might have about projects, patterns, techniques and teaching methods. To earn your Martha Pullen Teacher License, you’ll submit photos of several projects (some assigned, some your choice) along with some specific technique samples.

Once you have your license, you will co-own the copyright with the Martha Pullen Company for all the projects, including the complete, illustrated directions. That means you’ll be able to copy the directions to share with your students, or make the projects for sale without limit. Of course, many of our students take licensing courses just for the fun of it! Everyone is welcome, and no matter what your reason is for joining us, one thing is certain: this course will help your sewing become more polished, satisfying and creative.

We invite you to join us for this unique online learning experience.

Hi, Carol: Sewists of all skill levels are welcome! The lessons in the course start at the beginning with general techniques. You will not only master all the essential techniques, but more advanced ones too. The Martha Pullen teaching staff is known for their expertise of breaking down even the hardest of techniques into bite-size pieces and making them easy to learn. We hope you’ll join us!

Do you need an embroidery machine to complete the projects? How many required projects are there?

  4. Natalie Nettles Post author

Hi, Barb: We don’t offer complete kits for all the projects, however we will have bundles developed for the students participating in this particular licensing. These bundles will include a variety of materials that will be helpful in completing the required techniques and projects in the licensing.

Once the bundles for The Perfect Mix are available, they’ll be offered in our online shop: https://store.marthapullen.com/c-171-kits The prices for the new bundles aren’t available yet, but they will be similar to the prices of bundles from previous licensings that you see on that link.

Hope this helps! Let us know if you have any more questions.

Hi, Cam: All embroidery is optional. You do not need to own an embroidery machine (or sashiko machine or embellisher) to get your Martha Pullen License. If you don’t own a serger, for instance, that’s not a problem, either. There are directions for completing the required techniques and projects using a sewing machine instead.

To earn your Martha Pullen Teacher License, you’ll submit photos of several projects (two assigned, two your choice) along with four specific technique samples.

Hope this helps! Let us know if you have any more questions.

I would love to take this course but I would have to start late because of carpal tunnel surgery. And I may be working at an alterations shop later this summer one or two days a week. If needed can I get an extension to complete the course?

Hi Marla: Of course! We always give extensions if needed. We hope you’ll join us!
