Fall and Holiday Sewing Inspiration

Can you believe it’s already October?

From seasonal decorations to holiday garments to special gifts, there is much to sew between now and the new year! Below, we’ve gathered together a few seasonal children’s outfit ideas from our past fall and holiday issues of Sew Beautiful. All of these items are made in warm, comfortable corduroy and twill fabrics:

Candy Corn Smocking

Candy Corn Smocking – Michié Mooney’s “Candy Corn” smocking plate, featured in issue #144, is perfect for conventional smocked inserts or bishops. Here, Michié worked up her “Classic Bubble” #115 and “Bishop” #135 patterns in black twill from Fabric Finders trimmed with black gingham piping.

Pajamas&Snowman

Christmas Morning Memories (left) and Snow Princess

Christmas Morning Memories – Special pajamas are one sewing tradition that can continue for as long as your family shares Christmas morning together. This boy’s robe featured in issue #109 is Simplicity pattern #5329 in solid tan baby cord cotton corduroy and trimmed with light blue scalloped trim.

Snow Princess – Featured in issue #120, this holiday dress by Ashley Coulson is made following the general instructions for our “Pascale” pattern. The front bodice is pieced using a pre-pleated insert and machine embroidered with a snowmen design. The finished insert is pieced first at the sides with blocks of corduroy and then across the bottom with a strip of corduroy so that it accommodates both the width and length of the lower bodice pattern. Once the pieces are sewn together to create a block of fabric, the lower bodice pattern is centered over the blocked fabric and cut out. The collar is made of white cotton sateen and trimmed with red piping. The dress bodice is lined with blue corduroy. The shrug jacket is made of red fine-wale corduroy (we suggest pre laundering before construction) and lined with white cotton sateen.

First Day Cuties

First Day Cuties – These outfits from Barbara Martin and her sewing students were featured in issue #126. The boy’s overalls are from the “Morgan” pattern by The Children’s Corner in a print, cotton twill trimmed with orange gingham check from Fabric Finders. The A-line jumper is “Lacy” by The Children’s Corner in orange cotton twill and trimmed with orange and white polka dot grosgrain ribbons.
