What’s better than finding the perfect heirloom pattern to sew? Having a project kit for that pattern so you’ve got everything you need to make it, all in one convenient place! If you have ever been to one of our live and in-person events, you know that we put together beautiful project kits full of the best fabrics and laces and trims for our students to sew during their time with us.
We also have a number of project kits available in our online store. In fact, we’ve added several new kits recently featuring some of our most loved patterns of all time. I’ve gathered together five of my favorite kits for little ones — whether you want to make a special occasion dress, a daygown or a sweet summertime ensemble, I hope you find something here that inspires you.
Summertime Baby Dress, Bloomers & Hat: This precious ensemble designed by Karen Bosch is perfect for playtime, but has plenty of heirloom appeal. It includes a play top, bloomers and floppy sun hat — all sweetly trimmed with gathered Swiss edging. The kit is available in houndstooth pink or blue and a download for a cute little fish machine embroidery design is included. Sizes: NB to 24M.
Lace Diamond Daygown and Bonnet: Sew the perfect heirloom for baby with this darling daygown and matching bonnet. This pattern was featured in Martha Pullen’s classic book Elegant Sewing for Baby. Beautiful lace diamonds grace the front of the daygown, and the skirt and bonnet too. The kit is available in pink or blue. Sizes: 1-3M, 3-6M and 12M.
Smocked Heirloom Rosebud Dress Ensemble: This pretty ensemble began with a vintage cape Billie McAndrews designed for her daughter in the 1950s. Cheryl Davidson recreated the cape, along with a coordinating A-line dress, for our March/April 2008 issue of Sew Beautiful. Both the dress and the cape are smocked and embroidered with bullion roses. This kit also includes a couple of great bonuses that you’ll love: Martha Pullen’s popular Joy of Smocking book and a digital download of our 2008 Sew Beautiful collection. Sizes: 2-6 years.
Fancy Slip Beach Dress and Bloomers: Linen and lace perfectly complement one another on this darling summertime set made from the classic Martha Pullen pattern, Fancy Slip and Panties. This is the perfect little white ensemble for taking photos on the beach! The A-line slip can be made in three different lengths – short, knee and tea. The bloomers have elastic casings at the waist and legs along with ruffled lace edging. Sizes: 12M – 10 years.
Heirloom Tea Dress: Judith Dobson’s timeless Tea Dress pattern is an heirloom masterpiece. Designed for heirloom sewing techniques using lace shaping, entredeux and gathered lace, it’s the perfect keepsake dress for special occasions — from Easter to First Communion and more. The skirt fancy band features rows of gathered ruffles, the bodice is embellished with lace shaping and the sleeves feature two rows of shaped lace insertion. Both the sleeves and the neckline are also edged with gathered ruffles. The kit is available in pink or blue. Sizes: 2T – 10 years.
