
| Redwork Quilt Supplies: Redwork Card (for 5 by 7 formats), red #30 weight thread, white thread for quilt construction, wash-away stabilizer for embroidery, batting (50-1/2" by 41"), 3-3/4 yards of tone-on-tone white fabric, 1/8 yard of tone-on-tone red fabric, KK2000, safety pins, straight pins. All seams 1/4" unless otherwise indicated. 1. Cut one backing piece 52" by 42". Cut two side border pieces 2-3/4" by 46". Cut two border pieces for the top and bottom 2-3/4" by 41". Set pieces aside. 2. Cut 20 squares of white fabric 9" or large enough to be hooped for a 5" by 7" embroidery. Embroider the squares with each of the designs from the Redwork card. Center the embroidery and cut each square to 8". 3. Cut 31 sashing pieces from white fabric 8" by 2-1/2" and 12 sashing squares from red fabric 2-1/2". 4. Create five horizontal panels as follows: embroidered block, sashing piece, embroidered block, sashing piece, embroidered block, sashing piece, embroidered block. 5. Create four sashing strips as follows: sashing piece, red sashing square, sashing piece, red sashing square, sashing piece, red sashing square, sashing piece. 6. Stitch the horizontal panels to the sashing strips as follows: horizontal panel, sashing strip, horizontal panel, sashing strip, horizontal panel, sashing strip, horizontal panel, sashing strip, horizontal panel. The vertical and horizontal sashing pieces should meet at the red sashing square. 7. Center and stitch the long border strips to each side of the quilt top. Trim even with the quilt top. Stitch the top and bottom border pieces to the quilt top/side border strips. Trim even with the side border strips. 8. Layer as follows: Backing, Batting, Quilt Top. The wrong side of the backing and quilt top should be against the batting. Pin together very well with safety pins. Cut all layers even along the outer edges. 9. Quilt on each side of the sashing strips and along the inside seams of the border pieces. 10. For the binding cut several strips 3-1/4" wide. Stitch the strips together to form one long strip at least 195" long. Fold the strip in half to measure 1-5/8". Press. 11. Place the cut edges of the binding to the edges of the layered quilt, right side together and pin. Place a 1/2" pleat at each corner. Where the binding ends meet, overlap the ends by 1" and cut off the excess. Place one end into the other. Fold the cut edges of the outer piece to the inside 1/4" to finish the edge. Stitch together using a 1/2" seam. 12. Fold the binding over the seam allowance to the back of the quilt creating a binding. Stitch the binding in place by hand or by machine. |
