Something to Make for a Baby

The Modern Priscilla
February 1920

Some day you will find one of those tiny pink or blue missives in your mail-box announcing the arrival of a Kenneth or Katherine, and then the question will be - "What shall I make for a baby?"  The dainty, little Gertrude, No. 20-2-35, shown above, made of either nainsook or flannel, is one of the prettiest answers we can suggest to that question.  There is no making problem to it, just a straight French seam on each side.  The embroidery is simple satin-stitch, satin outline, and tiny eyelets, done in white, but the pattern is as delicate as can be.

"Have you a little fairy in your home?"  One who could enhance the charms of a cunning bonnet with a pair of bewitching brown eyes and curly locks?  The bonnet, No. 20-2-36, is a snug little three-piece affair, having a round crown at the back, and a straight face band buttonholed and embroidered in satin-stitch and satin outline, with wee eyelets for the flower centres.  It comes in three sizes, 12-inch face measure for infants; 13-inch, 6 months; 14-inch, one year.  There are several ways of pulling the bonnet into the little crown, but we suggest the following as a neat finish: French seam the back of the bonnet, then gather and whip to the crown; sew on Val. Edging around crown, having top edge of lace cover the seam.  The best effect is gained if the lace is not too full.  Finish around the bottom with Val. edging.  Gather a piece of your Val. edging, correct face measure for the bonnet, and set into the French seam when you sew on the embroidered face band.  Many mothers have detachable, wadded linings made of wash silk in pink or blue, so that Baby can wear the dainty washable bonnets the year around.  Of course the festive rosettes match the lining, and if the chin strap and rosettes are both attached with ball and socket fasteners, Mother will be spared mush "tacking" and "untacking" on laundry days.
