6. Silk Combing Coat

I believe this is a combing coat. I am always thrilled to find a silk piece to add to my collection since silk simply does not hold up like cotton and silk pieces are rare. Beautiful coats like this one were put on before combing and styling the hair. There are beautifully gathered pieces of the silk around the neckline and across the shoulder. It almost looks like smocking. On the right side of this combing coat are two little hand-whipped pockets. I just wonder what they might have been used for. The sleeves are beyond gorgeous with their two rows of insertion and the glorious, very wide French edging. This beautiful side edging is used around the front panel piece which is almost like a very long and large collar. Lace has been shaped in miters on both sides of this collar piece. This piece is stitched totally by hand with the most delicate little stitches.
