17. Trousseau Sleepdress

This white Swiss batiste sleepdress (nightgown) is so beautiful I believe it must have been made as part of a trousseau. The neckline features two strips of lace insertion going around the top of the neck. Entredeux is at the top with gathered lace edging above the entredeux. There is a beautiful piece of wide edging stitched in-between the two pieces of insertion. There is some lavender stitching at the top and bottom of this wide edging which certainly had to be stitched on by hand. To hold in the fullness of the top of the gown, next is a piece of fabric with lots of buttonholes stitched where ribbon is run through to act as a drawstring. Another piece of lace insertion is below this ribbon/buttonhole area. To hold in the fullness of the body of the sleepdress, sets of three released, folded tucks delicately grace the front. Holding in the fullness on the sleeves are also sets of three folded, released tucks. This gown is stitched totally by hand. The sleeves are absolutely magnificent with a row of wide French edging at the bottom of the sleeve. A slightly gathered batiste ruffle is next, with another piece of wide insertion below that and a straight ruffle with French edging on the bottom of each sleeve. The bottom of the gown has three tiny tucks and a wide hem.
