14. Swiss Eyelet Christening Dress At first glance this beautiful christening dress might seem to be hand done. The eyelet is so very beautiful. Upon closer examination of the back of the eyelet embroidery I find that it is machine done because the threads pass over at the same place from pattern to pattern. This dress probably dates back to 1880 because of the scooped neckline and the short sleeves. A drawstring pulls in the neckline. This was a popular method of making clothing fit longer. When dresses were passed down from generation to generation, the dress would fit many sizes of babies by simply adjusting the drawstring. The skirt is very beautiful also with hand-stitched folded tucks and the eyelet on the bottom. This dress is constructed totally by hand. What patience! |
