Linen Cutwork and Tucks Blouse-Circa 1910
This beautiful blouse is made of a very heavy white linen. It buttons up the front underneath the beautiful cutwork panel on the front. There are five tucks on either side of the hand embroidery. The puffed sleeves have a wide cuff on the bottom which closes with two buttons and buttonholes. The bottom of the sleeves are gathered in with seven darts which are 4 and one half inches long. The back has four tucks and a casing which gathers in the waistline of the blouse. I think these casings made the blouse easier to stay tucked in the skirt. My grandmother started teaching school in rural Alabama about 1915 and I can just imagine that she wore “substantial” fabrics line this to teach in. I don’t think she did hand embroidery but this blouse is “non see through” and would be sturdy in the laundry. Laundry was usually boiling clothing on Saturday in a pot outside for most families in the rural south in the early part of the last century..
